That's gorgeous - i was in the lucky position to choose between a very similar rumour and a Merlin.. The Merlin got the nod, narrowly. I'm keeping this one and my Spitfire 5 until I give it all up (i.e. Never).

Very nice!. That neck through top reminds me a little of the Westone Thunder IIIA i used to covet back in the day. A very cool looking Bass - I'm a fan of the two under / three over tuner arrangement - nice short headstock good string break angles and less neck dive. Would love to hear some sound samples too. Take the neck off and stick it in a freezer?. That's a first - never heard of that one before, but wood is wood, i guess.

It probably means that you don't have to have vast piles of wood lying around drying naturally for ages, which might actually save money.

Have a look at this - thermally treated wood: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thermally_modified_wood Interestingly, roasting increases the hardness, stability and durability of both soft and hard woods, but actually decreases its bending strength, which isn't necessarily a good thing in a guitar neck but this can be compensated for by the truss rod structurally and the improved stability means seasonal humidity changes don't have so much effect. Overall, i'd be willing to believe that the pros outweigh the cons.

Hiw about this one? 3+2, small headstock for balance and to avoid dead spots..

I'm loving it so far.. The passive tone working in parallel with the active circuit gives you so much tone flexibility, and its very easy to get the sound I want.

This beauty is now mine!. Fabulous construction, playability and tones - I think I've reached Bass nirvana. So comfortable, balanced and perfect in feel. I never really liked Single cut designs before I saw my first Merlin, but I think this shape looks great, and the timbers are beautifully crafted as all of Bernie's products are. Facings on the body and headstock are black american walnut (I think) on a spalted maple body. Not sure what the neck laminations are - maple, walnut, with ebony detail stips between the neck and wings, and between the body and top. The body is chambered, coming in at just over 9lb. The electronics package features two GB single coil pickups, volume, pickup blend, stacked bass / treble control, stacked parametric mid (boost/cut on top and centre frequency below), passive tone knob with active/passive switch. The passive tone works in active mode, giving you all the tone shaping you could need, as well as a pure passive mode for all of those sounds. As the pickups are single coil, the series/parallel switch has been configured as a kill switch. which is very useful. This is a beautifully constructed and thoughtfully designed instrument from the master, Bernie Goodfellow. Thankyou Bernie, for your superb craftsmanship. A significant investment, to be sure, but I'm a very, very happy camper!. P.S. sorry for the crappy smartphone photos - really doesn't do it justice.

Will do.. they're taking ages to get to best brass gear as they are the 6 string sized Zen Blades and I'm waiting for Nordstrand to make them. Then I've got to decide whether to wire them single or parallel... Will be a fun experiment.

Hi, Heres is my lovely brown burst SRMS805. It was my first five string and my first Ibanez. The neck feels absolutely fantastic, although possibly the string spacing is a little tight for slap with my big mitts. I've got some Nordstrand Zen Blades on order to replace the Bartollini BH2s, which I think sound a little too dark for my tastes. Lovely basses! Regards Alex

Hi, This is my 'new to me' 2005-ish Spitfire 5er. It has a maple top, snakewood fingerboard, bound neck and an ash body. It's been played quite a bit over the years, but the frets are in pretty good shape and the body is in good order overall, with just a few minor dings and some play wear on the Hipshot bridge. Hardware was changed from gold to black at some point and bass came with the original Schaller bridge and tuners. Anyone know this bass? has it passed through your hands? I'm interested to know a bit more about it's history. It came with a very low setup - 1.6mm at the 17th fret on the 'B', which is a bit too much for my heavy hands. It played cleanly all the way up and down the neck. I'm still getting it dialled in to my liking but so far I'm loving the way it feels and sounds. The pickups have a very clean and extended treble response, which puts my playing uder the microscope... going to have to up my game! Cheers, Alex
