Cool pics, what app did that?
Thanks, it probably gets old after a while though. I used Camera+ my camera app of choice. I favor photogene for iPad post adjustments though, camera+ is more limited even though what it does it does really well (and quickly). However, it is great when taking the photos, you can use the +/- buttons to snap, and you can choose where in the picture to focus and where to set the white balance.
3.
Surely the biggest variable BB3000 had was tuning a 125 or 130 guage string to E and the same across the neck - an extra 25 mm string thickness will make a difference to the sound - ultra ultra heavy guage effectively. In a similar way, if you play a G on the E string at 15th fret it'll sound substantially different to an open G, although the same note (well almost ). String manufacturers make a range of guages - it's not for show they actually sound very different.
You got me wrong, sorry if I was unclear. This is what went down in casa BB yesterday - I mistakenly put five strings out of a six string set on my jazz, so first time around the strings/gauges were E .100 (where the B string normally is) A .80 D .60 G .40 C .30 With this set of strings I first tuned up to BEADG, which resulted in all kinds of bad sounds and very sloppy strings (of course). I then tuned as above and performed the first part of the "experiment". E string sounded great, very open and agressive. Since the high C is more ore less useless to me in comparison to a low B, I then took out the proper B string, took away the above and stringed it B .120 E .100 A .80 D .60 G .40 Now the E string sounded clearly different when slapped, fingerstyle not so much of an apparent difference. In ref to Happy Jack's comment - the difference I heard was mainly when slapping (it's a Miller V after all ) so I don't think it had much to do with how I was striking the strings. Like Fat Rich I do suspect that the poor E string could have felt mishandled being strung in the B position and then restrung in the correct one. To do a proper test one (with strings a plenty) should fit brand new strings in both the EADGC and BEADG tunings.
i dont care how good he is, hes either said this under his breath sometime, or hes talking nonsense.... i hate all these minor details to a bassists tone.... its total rubbish.. its in the playing that matters
Since he says it very explicitly in the Jamirotalk interview linked earlier in the thread, I'm sure Paul Turner sincerely feels there is a difference. You're absolutely right it is the playing that matters though!
4.
Pretty big variable there if you ask me!
Yeah I know! However the differende in sound wasn't that typical deadness that can come from restringing. Also the bridge breaking angles were pretty much identical for having the E string in the B vs E position, I'd suspect that end to be more sensitive than the head end. Probably never will feel fully motivated using brand new strings for both alternatives in a repeat experiment, but it would be quite interesting.

Sorry about the cheesy filters, I just couldn't resist playing with my iPhone. Anyway, here is my latest addition - rearranging my collection towards 34" single coil Jazz fivers. Am extremely happy with the Miller V, weighs only 4kg and is very smooth tonally, and the neck is sooo sweet.
6. By stupid mistake (why the **** does DR label their strings 1-4, 1-5, 1-6) I happened to string my Miller V EADGC yesterday. On a side note, when I tuned to pith (BEADG) I thought something had gone seriously wrong... Then a moment of "Noooo, you idiot!" when I saw the sixth string package with a big fat "6" on it, before thinking - oh, what the heck and tuning it to EADGC. I played around with it in EADGC for a while, mainly thumpin' away, before restringing it proper in BEADG. The difference on the E was significant, stringed EADGC it sounded more open and aggressive whereas in BEADG it was slightly more contained. So yes, to my ears it definitely made a difference. The one variable that possibly could have confounded my conclusion is that I didn't restring with new strings in BEADG, but moved the EADG(c) strings one up, so the E string in the BEADG scenario wasn't brand spanking new (I think that restringing actually can be a bit detrimental at times). Didn't feel up to just throwing away a brand new set of DR Fat Beams though... So, to me it definitely was a sifnificant difference on the E between EADGC va BEADG tuning. Was it enough to shine through in a recording? Possibly slightly. Was it enough to be audible in a live band context? No way.
7. I have two sets lying around waiting for my Stingray 4HH to require new strings, judging from the reported impressions and the sound files (thanks a lot!) the Cobalts will be just perfect for the ray. Also, it will be interesting how they feel under my fingers - I find that is almost as important in a band context as the (often relatively small) differences in sound across similar strings of different brands.
8.
Bought some magazines from him, very smooth transaction. They arrived the next day and I'm very pleased!
Same here, thanks a lot Michael!
9. Kaarel is a true gentleman, we did a trade (Fodera NYC vs US Lakland) and all went perfect.
10. The Sadowsky has been traded, thank you everyone who showed interest in this wonderful bass.
11. Bought a Badass II from 6feet7 a little while back, excellent communications throughout, speedy delivery and a very happy Jass Bazz finally getting rid of that BBOT.
12.
Bought a handful of PIO caps recently, brilliant comms and great little things.
Same here, excellent communications and amazing value for how they transformed the basses that have got some PIO love so far. Thank you so much Nick!
13. Jens is a super nice guy with excellent taste in basses, a true gem who I've done several succesful deals with and who has helped me with valuable input on numerous other accounts. Highly recommended!!
14. Sounds like a bad specimen to me, I have the same pedal and never had a problem with it. On the contrary it's the best tracking octave pedal I've ever had and it sounds awesome! The Octamizer is also very cool though, but tracks sliiiightly less well. IME, YMMV and so on. Very strange response from Dunlop - even if I do agree more pedals is generally a fun idea.
15.
You need a boring old Fender Jazz, one of those 'everyday' ones that's been kicking around for 40 years or so and not really very desirable. . .
That sounds very boring indeed, to tell you the truth I'd really prefer something exceptionally +++BOOORING+++, preferably also with worn down frets and a nicely twisted neck.
16. The Barefaced column in BGM I quite like! Have no intention of cancelling my subscription, even though as has been said earlier a LOT of bass and GAS information nowadays comes from fine forums such as this and other sources on the interwebs.
17.
what's the weight of the bass?
Just shy of 4kg - 3945g (8.7 lbs) on my scales.
18. With two fine basses on their way from overseas I've most likely sorted my GAS for single coil fivestrings, but will still be leaving this ad open. In terms of trades, please feel free to shoot me any suggestions, may also do a two for one trade depending on the offers. Will not be bumping this beauty for a while now. Cheers guys, Mattias
19. +1 on keeping your hands clean and everything. The two best brands I've found in terms of keeping the zzzzing are DR (Fat/Hi Beams) and a hidden gem: Newtone. I have Newtones (a custom wound for Unicornbass of Sweden, but all the same wound by Newtone) on my Unicorn (a true slappers dream bass) and those darn strings are into their third year now and still sound like new. Mind, I don't sweat and always clean my hands before playing, but the Newtones are way way more long lived than anything I've ever tried (including DR, they typically last me 6 months before the zing starts to fade).
20.
All very strange indeed. After reading issue 2 I was considering a subscription, glad I waited now. Cheers Geoff
Still waiting to be able to read issue 1 on my iPad. I could pay for it from the iPad, but alas - I couldn't read it. Luckily the iPad version was just around the corner last I heard.
21. Hey ho Gustaf, nice to see you on here!
22.
Truly horrible
I know, in addition you can get them for less than half of what I'm asking - and that's still too much. You will never find a Sadowsky NYC this ugly or expensive ever again, trust me.
23. That's one ugly looking Fender - you wouldn't be interested in a p/x with my totally useless Sadowsky M5 NYC?
24. Before proceeding with trades, or possibly withdrawing this for a while, I'm lowering the cash price further to £2.000 for this ugly a**, crap sounding hopeless to play Sadowsky NYC.
