  1. Conversely, I really like DB and would love one (annoyingly there have been a bunch for sale that I could easily have gone to try before I moved north, but are now, literally, out of reach. The universe trying to tell me something, perhaps?), with Danny Thompson being one of my favourites, not just for his chops, but especially for his tone. Because of that, I didn't really enjoy the DB performance because I didn't like the tone, it was way too muffled and dead sounding for my tastes. Perhaps this was down to the sound guy (the Beeb have previous for poor bass mixes, in a multitude of settings after all), but as his open E sounded kind of OK, I'm guessing it's a personal choice. However, he won over more traditional lead instruments, which is a nice thing for the bass community (how you compare a DB performance to that of a piano is beyond me, but a win's a win).
  2. I think the Kala has better definition than the Fender, so, unless it's an ergonomic thing, I haven't got a clue. Either way, what a great advert for shorter scale basses.
  3. You are not wrong. Thanks for sharing.

  7. The black one looks a bit tasty. At £199, it could make for a good upgrade chassis.
  8. I fitted 1/2" Hipshot Lightweight Short tuners to my SBMM shorty 'Ray. I still had to add a bit of tape to make them snug though. Great upgrade, super smooth, accurate action and despite not being a huge weight saving on paper, it made the whole bass feel much lighter.
  9. Just looking again, the headstock looks like it has been photoshopped somewhat.
  10. That bridge looks like the one they use on the SBMM Sub range.
  11. Fever - Peggy Lee
  12. Burn - Deep Purple
  13. Message in a Bottle - The Police
  14. Oooh! Hello, pretty.
  15. Based on the colours reproduced, Shell Pink. Normally, I'm a Surf/Sea Foam Green guy, but that looks a bit iridescent. They may look very different in the flesh.
  16. That’s sad to hear, G.
  17. Years of awful mixes on Later would say that that is a rare beast.
  18. Yes it does and they are through body.
  19. The bezel I fitted from Rickysounds (I think it was them) fitted inside the metal pickup surround, above the springs. The one you mention seems to replace the entire metal surround.
  20. Best get back into the trials/joys of playing in church, rather than drifting into dogma, otherwise the mods will come along with their chains, padlocks and keys.
  21. I kind of understand the obsession with soling being the be and end all, it’s because of the reverence paid to the formative days of rock guitar and the folk who came out of it. However, when you look at it, why would anyone just sit around and wait for their moment in the spotlight (a lot of jazz players spring to mind here) and not enjoy the whole song? I was in a band where I was one of two guitarists and the other player was an infinitely better lead player than me and so, quite rightly, did most of that work (never a boring widdle fest, always melodic), although we often did some harmony stuff. However, this forced me to embrace more rhythm work and, because of that, I got more into the song and was sawing away, having a great for the whole song, not just the odd 12 bars or so. Perhaps it’s no surprise that I migrated to the bass.
  22. From the picture, it looks like a high nut might be adding to the issue. "Set up nicely," but for whom? One person's low action is another's unplayable. What is the measurement at the 12th?
  23. We have a winner!
