1. Looks nice. But, I can't find the link to the clip. Is it on soundcloud or somewhere?
2. Thae Epi Rumblekat looks stunning.
3. Coated the fretboard in superglue? What made you choose superglue for finishing the fretboard? How did you go about it? What were the steps involved? Edit: Some information here: http://www.talkbass.com/threads/super-glue-fingerboard-coating.839731/
4. Guvnor GB704, being sold new for £219. http://www.amazon.co.uk/Guvnor-Chase-Electric-Guitar-String/dp/B00CG5WMQ2#productDetails
5. http://www.ebay.co.u...=item339262b6a6 That's the brand name. Description? I don't know. I don't remember ever seeing anything that looked like this. Edit: This is an interesting looking bridge, from the maker's blog. Not made by the maker, they were improving a cigar box instrument.
6. Strings? Two stylophones? One for you, one for your partner? http://www.thomann.d...ylophone_s1.htm Non-functional left handed acoustic bass? http://www.thomann.de/gb/harley_benton_b_30_nt_lh_decoration.htm
7. I'm in no desperate hurry. Yet. I'm hoping that the right thing will suddenly appear. I don't think that this through neck bass is the right thing. At first I had little idea of what it was, but wondered if it was one of the early Cor-tek basses. I did a search and it appears that it is a Cor-tek (Cort) made Kay bass, similar to one owned by Flat Eric! http://flatericbassa...01_archive.html I'd guess that it's not a factory fretless, but a defret. It would I suppose be an interesting thing to own, and Flat Eric says that he likes his fretted ones, but again I don't think it's exactly what I want. Edit: I like the look of this Aria Pro II precision with a glossy unlined maple neck. But, the starting price of £425 is too high for me, and may be too high for the market in general. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Aria-Pro-ii-1978-vintage-fretless-bass-guitar-with-leather-bag-/291194740143?pt=UK_Musical_Instruments_Guitars_CV&hash=item43cc8f1daf
8. The difficult thing with purchases between people who are on this forum is that second hand goods sell for variable prices. Jon, if he sells his VMJ, will know the top of market price for VMJs, and I as a buyer know the bottom of market price. We'd need to be able to agree on some middle ground price. This one that sold for £157 is a very good deal IMHO with the nice pickguard and the flats both being a bonus as far as I'm concerned. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/fender-squier-vintage-modified-fretless-jazz-bass-guitar-vgc-/171352344831?pt=UK_Musical_Instruments_Guitars_CV&hash=item27e56548ff If it had been me that won that auction (Derby is close enough) I'd be pretty happy, and would be ferrying it back on the Skylink as I type. However, this plane jane one (albeit said to be unplayed) sold for £175 collection only. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/SQUIRE-VINTAGE-MODIFIED-FRETLESS-BASS-/221474407692?pt=UK_Musical_Instruments_Guitars_CV&hash=item3390e7450c I'd say that second hand VM prices are quite good at the moment. Witness the one with probable neck issues that sold for £114 (rearrange the words 'bargepole' 'touch' 'a' 'not' 'with' into a well known phrase). http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Squier-Vintage-Modified-Fretless-Jazz-Bass-/231272920108?pt=UK_Musical_Instruments_Guitars_CV&hash=item35d8f0b42c Didn't someone on here buy a good condition one for less than that? I searched, but couldn't find the thread. Some time ago before I spent some fretless fund I had on something else, I had a discussion about a Thunder fretless through PMs. At the time, a number of fretless Thunders had sold for unusually high prices on ebay (some over £200 where I couldn't see anything particularly special about them). At that time I demurred as I believed that the seller would easily get more than I wanted to pay on ebay. Prices seem to have varied down on the Thunder fretlesses with the £145 starting bid one failing to sell.
9. @Paul S - I have tried the Squier VMJ and really like it. The Thunder 1A that is the subject of this thread received no bids, and has been relisted for the same price. I *could* buy it, but have heard that the ebanol fretboard on the VMJ is a bit marmite - and I liked it. The Thunder 1A would be £170 to me including p&p if I bid the starting price and won. But, my gut feeling is just telling me 'not yet'.
10. There's a guy in Leicester who sometimes busks singing and playing a double bass, that I'd say was 3/4 size. Maybe. It sounds really good and projects well. Roland, if you had to use a pick and pluck hard for projection, that still makes me think that for acoustic bass sound a DB is what is really needed.
11. Isn't the headstock alone bigger than some Steinberger bodies?
12. Thanks Jon. I didn't know about non-MIJ Grecos. (Or quite plausibly, I knew at some point and have forgotten it). Edit: The seller tells me that it was made in Japan in the 70s. I'm semi-tempted to go for this fretless Thunder 1A. Westone Thunder I-A Fretless bass black 1985 matsumoku Japan Collectable If it had a hardcase, I think that would tip me over. But, I think I'm edging towards leaving it and seeing what else comes up.
13. Greco Dan Armstrong copy plexiglass bass. Described as "Lucite" in the listing title, but the listing does mention the plexiglass body. http://www.ebay.co.u...=item3f39bb125d I have no idea how much these are worth, hence can't comment on whether it's a good deal or not.
14. Very much looking forward to reviews of these. Not too sure I'll be buying one myself, but I would like to know what they are like. Online reviews that I have seen have been mixed, with some people loving them, and some people not being so enthusiastic. I bid on one of the tanglewoods, but my bid was half what it went for! Really surprised it went for £141, but it is an ex-demo, so perhaps more valued than simple second hand. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/171380224548?ssPageName=STRK:MEDWX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1435.l2649
15. Some of the Zoom pedals have micro-switches that wear out. Hence be careful when buying one second hand. If you buy a pedal for practice, I'd recommend that you get one with an auxiliary input, so that you can play along with drum beats or music while practicing. My Zoom B2 doesn't have one. On the upside, I think that the B2 has a lot of good and useful sounds in it. I just wish that the microswitches on mine all worked. If the OP is getting a free bass, then he could afford a Roland Bass Microcube, and still stay within budget. It wouldn't be suitable for full band rehearsal or performance, but should work for home practice. http://www.roland.co...ails.aspx?p=940 Personally I like the idea of starting with a cheap but usable bass (and free is even better). It's possible to try out basses, but there's a chicken and egg problem. It's IMHO difficult to know what you want until you can play. And you need a bass to practice on before you can learn to play. A decent practice amp is more likely to remain useful throughout a player's development.
16. The original They Might be Giants. Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark (Andy McClusky played bass originally, which makes them more this-thread-friendly than other synth duos such as Erasure and The Pet Shop Boys).
17. I wonder if it would be possible to build a super-guitarron. With a body so big that the body has a hole through the sides in which the player stands, so that s/he is close enough to the front of the instrument to play.
18. MIJ SG "Project". Not sure that this is a bargain given how much is missing, unless someone has an old one with a broken neck or something lying around. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/VINTAGE-BASS-GUITAR-MIJ-PROJECT-/400741173062?pt=UK_Musical_Instruments_Guitars_CV&hash=item5d4e090746
19. Wesley had a number of interesting instruments. The had a bass that looked a bit like an iconic bass made by a well known litigious USA bass company once, but they stopped selling them. I've seen the plexiglass basses, but never played one.
20. I want! Eventually, not immediately. But sometime. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qQTaAv4yrdI Owen, your sound sample doesn't seem to be available any more.
21. The recommendation of a guitarron is an interesting one. I've had a look around, and they are available at various price points, but generally 'to order'. E.g. this is the cheapest I've found (but I've heard that GAK's cheaper specialty instruments can be ... variable). http://www.gak.co.uk...ican-bass/35563 Here's one in context. https://www.youtube....h?v=Zs1CKU0jb8c On youtube, the guitarron has a nice round sound, but not quite as deep as I hoped. The playing style seems to include a lot of double stops. https://www.youtube....h?v=cECWL5fIqoI I would guess it would be possible to tune it in all fourths tuning, if it's not tuned that way by default. The necks appear to be fretless, and very short in comparison to the body. But, if they have a good, loud, sound, then it's plausible that I may get interested in one someday. Not now as my next purchase is going to be a regular fretless. I did consider the Harley Benton fretless acoustic, but have found that acoustic basses just don't have the volume, and often have a too twangy sound for me. I did try a Rockbass Alien, but while the sound was very nice, it was quiet, and the instrument itself played poorly. (Possibly slipped through QC) I think that with acoustic bass, many people want the sound of a double bass in a smaller, cheaper, package. So many reviews of acoustic basses wish they were louder, and talk of playing styles that best mimic a double bass sound. Edit: http://www.talkbass.com/threads/guitarron-anyone.285638/ "The guitarron was very loud, probably louder than an unamplified DB". Hmmm.... interesting. They are typically tuned A D G C E A, so in all fourths apart from the C-E third. I would imagine they could be retuned to A D G C F Bb.
22. +1 on the recommendation to contact Thomann for a refund. The OP's contract is with Thomann, and it is them that is in breach of contract if the goods are not fit for purpose. Having the packaging or not doesn't matter if the return is because the goods are faulty.
23. I own both a Vintage V100, and also a Westone Thunder IIA guitar. IMHO both are decent guitars, and will do the job. I've heard that the Vintage VS6 is decent too. The V100s can be bought for about £100 second hand. My Westone cost me £175, but it came with an original hard case and is in superb condition. I've seen VS6s go for £80 or so on ebay. I have played a Chinese Tokai, and didn't feel that it was better than the V100. I'm no guitarist though, so this post may be worthless
24. https://www.facebook...&type=2 A minimalist approach.
25. Not sure on this myself, but I'll post it here in case anyone has an opinion on this. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Fretless-Jazz-with-Fender-Mex-lined-neck-and-other-upgrades-/271543885012?pt=UK_Musical_Instruments_Guitars_CV&hash=item3f3946dcd4 If I'm getting a Fenderish fretless, I'd prefer a VMJ. But I was vaguely tempted by this.
