1. Is that a bass string I see on this guitar? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YaIN13aDbCc If not, where is the IMHO very nice and fitting occasional simple bass accompaniment coming from?
2. That's an interesting looking thing. If it was a 99p start I would certainly be bidding on it. I wonder if it was done as someone's Design Engineering project at a university. The adjustable scale length sounds to me like an interesting idea. There may not be enough adjustment to really change the sound all that much, but it would mean that an owner could make the scale length match their other basses. Which might or might not be useful. In any case, I think it's a very interesting thing.
3.
"This bass was purchased for collectors purpose only." If he bought it for £1800 in 2004 and manages to sell it 10 years later for £5000, then he might as well have purchased it for investment purposes only. Remind me, what is a collector's purpose?
If he sold it for £5000, then that would be a return of 10.7567% per year. Which would be a decent return on his investment. But, first there are ebay fees to consider. And then there's the slight point of whether or not he will actually manage to sell it for £5000. Personally I am sometimes of the opinion that there are lots of sellers out there imagining up hoards of 'collectors' for all sorts of basses, when the actual number of collectors is much smaller, leading to an unrealistic impression of supply and demand.
4. You asked if anyone had any thoughts on it, not whether anyone actually has any useful information about it I think it looks pretty nice apart from the Fender logo.
5. Thanks for all the suggestions. It will take me a while to work through them, as I wish to listen to each one quite carefully.
6. Why don't we just lock this topic, and start a new Rickenfaker topic in 'Bass Guitars'? We could put a link to this locked thread in the first post in the new thread.
7. MInus a d string and with untested electronics. But, it is s £25 P Bass. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Roytek-Precision-Bass-Copy-/251424029158?hash=item3a8a0a39e6
8.
You can sometimes just fill a bit of the existing nut with a tiny spot of superglue, that what I've done in the past.
I was thinking of doing this (E-C tuning) on my Rockbass, and basically I don't want to fiddle with the just-a-nut. (Apologies if this is a bit OT for the thread). Return to the thread itself, I'm taking my first steps to learn two handed tapping. And I'm really finding that more than four strings is an advantage.
9.
I've just moved to a 5'er tuned E-C - a great bit of soloing flexibility
Did you have to replace the nut so that the slots were the right width?
10. Is it this one? If so, this seems like bargain! http://www.allparts.com/JEF-FL-Fretless-Replacement-Neck-with-Lines-for-Jazz-Bass_p_1989.html I'm very tempted myself, but there is too much stuff I'd like to buy and I limit my spending strictly. Just out of curiosity, what sort of donor basses would this fit?
11. I've been referring to my Cimar bass, which looks vaguely like the bass of a well known USA manufacturer. Do I need to be so circumspect?
12. Thanks. Still, £90 is not an exceptionally large amount of money. Just out of vague curiosity, would it be worth that? The HoneyBurst one isn't where I thought it was. For some reason I read it as being in Markfield. Where it actually is would be quite some journey for me to pick up.
13. If that Honeyburst one was fretless I'd put up with the two hour round trip bus ride to nab it. Is the blue one MIJ, or MIK?
14. Satellite, not Kay, but ugh! http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Vintage-Satellite-short-scale-bass-from-the-1970s-Right-handed-/131091400555?pt=UK_Musical_Instruments_Guitars_CV&hash=item1e85a8076b
15. I don't know the Japanese Squiers, and which are worth more than others. But, I give this link in case it's of use to someone. http://www.ebay.co.u...=item4618e31e34 (Neither can I spot instruments that are not what they claim to be - though I have no reason (yet?) to believe that this is not what it claims to be).
16. In the meantime, my unrealistically low bid on the Maya fretless is still winning. I think it'll go for £80-100, or more. And therefore I do not see a trip to Nottingham in the near future. Edit: Outbid now. Edit: The Columbus seller previously sold the instrument for £5? http://www.ebay.co.u...=item1c385e0280
17. Columbus bass. With a case and amp, but still £350 looks just a bit steep. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Columbus-Bass-Guitar-Case-Amp-And-Speaker-/121252286311?pt=UK_Musical_Instruments_Guitars_CV&hash=item1c3b330f67
18. I don't particularly like the look of this one either. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Kay-Bass-Guitar-/281243112363?pt=UK_Musical_Instruments_Guitars_CV&hash=item417b6553ab
19. I've listened to the two tracks from Letters From Home. I'm not familiar with Pat Metheny's music, and it was much more gentle and accessible than I expected. The bass playing on Spring Ain't Here and Slip Away are exactly the kind of examples I'm looking for. The playing is simple and restrained, but there are little touches there which just make the lines work so well. Ladies Night in Buffalo didn't work so well for me. It's simple and well played, but fairly straightforward, even in the details (unless I missed something - I'll listen again).
20. I'd buy an Ibanez Artist bass like this one: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Ibanez-Artist-Bass-Guitar-/261371159257?ssPageName=ADME:B:WNARL:GB:1123 Except in better condition.
21. I did think I hadn't seen a bass with a neck like that, but the body looked familiar. But I did assume that it was simply a bass that I hadn't seen before.
22.
I just want the neck :'(
I would vaguely want the whole thing, but as of today not enough to bid full market price for it. But, what I'm bidding (still winning I see) is more than people would probably want to pay just for the neck.
23. Thanks for the recommendations of bassists listen to. Which songs played by these bassists might be good ones to listen to first?
24.
Ont he subject of Talking Heads, I nominate this marvellous piece of minimalism:
I've been reading the story of how that album was recorded. In that David Byrne and Brian Eno would try to do the bass themselves, and Tina would be bought in to re-record the bassline. Are there any soul ballads with a really subtle touch on the bass, but where what's played and how it's played is just perfect?
25.
Qu'est que ce?
Tina Weymouth comes up with interesting quirky lines. I've been listening to some of her work on the Tom Tom Club album "The Good The Bad And The Funky" (at least the parts of it which are available on youtube). E.g. But it's not quite what I'm thinking of. I'm more thinking of classic ballad that might have a simple bass line, but where the genius of the bassline is in the detail.
