I have one to many basses and unfortunately one has to go, I've owned this for a year and in that time I've managed to get some great Precison like tones out of this bass. It's a Japanese build from 1983 which is respected for good reason and the reviews I read on harmony central were what convinced me to buy this. There are quite a few scratches and dings on the edges and back of the bass which are hard to photograph. There were two small points on the front of the bass where I had to touch up the paint as there were scratches through the finish to the wood, you can see these in the last picture. I've upgraded the machine heads with heavy duty clover leaf style tuners, the original tuners were ok but a bit worn and didn't hold tunings so well. I'm looking for £180 collected (im in Milton Keynes, M1 junction 14) or posted for £200. Thanks for looking!

Can I install an active preamp into a passive bass?
Yep, these make a lot of difference and not too obtrusive. just a bass treble pot by East.
Thanks for all the advice, very helpful and informative. -
Again, it depends what you're putting in. If your bass has vol tone and three way switch you'd probably look at putting in a stacked pot for treble and bass cut and boost. What is in the bass currently and what do you have in mind?
I think it's just standard passive Yamaha jazz and split p pickup. -
It really depends on the preamp you choose and whether the control cavity is big enough to house a 9v battery. If not, there are always external preamps you can use, such as the Sadwosky.
Ok thanks, assuming the control cavity was big enough, would I need a new control knob? -
I have a Yamaha RBX 550M which I really like and an RBX 800A. I tend to favour the sound of the RBX 800A and am thinking about fitting an active preamp into the RBX 550M. Would it be possible without drilling or cutting into the body of the bass?

Ever been persuaded to buy a bass by a band member?
megallica replied to megallica's topic in General Discussion
Apart from some mild noise about how the Fender Precision bass is the only bass worth having (which I just ignored and took even weirder basses to practice next time), I have not been coerced into buying anything. I would leave any band where that happened. Completely out of order, except in serious tribute bands which aim to replicate the original band's sound, looks and instruments. Then that's kind of understandable, but you still shouldn't be coerced/pressured.
Good point, if you were trying to look more like a specific band. The band in question was an original band which had a Radiohead/Stereophonics sound. -
I've always had a thing for Yamaha basses and when I joined my second band I was playing a BBN4. Thing is, the band leader (singer/songwriter) wanted us to look more "professional" and I "had" to buy a Fender so people would take us more serious. To cut a long story short and for an easy life I traded my Yammy in for a MIM Jazz. I actually did grow to like the bass but I sold it after leaving the band and bought a BBG5S.

Bob Marley - Is this love This was tabbed in one of the Bassist magazines back in the day and I had great fun learning it. I think there's elements of self-indulgence in most genres of music, whether it's blues/rock/metal guitarists playing extended guitar solos or jazzers playing extended solo breaks. Although most people tend to think of the Pistols/Damned/Exploited etc when they think of punk, there are a lot of accomplished bass players in punk bands too (Matt Freeman, Fat Mike and Jay Bentley are worth checking out).
At that time we were playing big halls with big stages and he used to walk over to his amp with his back to the crowd and adjust his Mesa boogie while pissehhh and the drummer used to shout through his headset "dirty basstard" !
Maybe my childish humour but this is the funniest thing I've heard in weeks.
I think i mentioned on here before but i used to play in a band wth a guitarist/alco who alway wore black leather trousers on stage so he could piss himself without the punters knowing. His boots stank and NOBODY else would lift his mic stand.
Ugh, surely the steam would give him away? I've given this too much thought already...
Schecter
Big fan of Schecter basses but I found the string spacing on my Stilleto Custom 5 a bit tight.
The simple answer is 'a lot less then they're worth'! It's been done in another thread, but Warwicks are for whatever reason about as hip as disco at the moment, and so prices are very low. It's a buyers market. I picked up a really really nice early Fortress on here (there's a thread if you search) for £400, and it's a belter. The $$ and Thumb go for more, again, the Search tool is your friend. If you're looking for a bass for rock, I think the Fortresses are ideal, the P/J pickup combination certainly helps, and the earlier ones have a fantastic (and small, beware if you like P-necks) all-wenge neck and the JAN1. The action on mine can be taken down to the lowest I've ever encountered without any issues, and the bass itself is the easiest to play I've owned. It's a keeper. I'm contemplating fitting Wizard pups to it, to give it a more trad sound, but that's all I'd change about it. PS 80s Yamahas? I've got a BB3000A whcih I've had from new in 87. Niiiice...
I remember seeing the Fortress advertised in the mid nineties, good deal finding one for £400, the 80's Yamaha's get a lot of respect from players for good reason.

I'm hoping to pick up a second hand Warwick next month, what sort of prices do BO Thumb, Corvette $$ or Fortress basses sell for these days? I owned a Corvette Rockbass, Corvette Standard and Corvette $$ a few years ago and was very impressed with the quality and sound of these basses. Since then I've been getting into 80's Ibanez and Yamaha basses.

One of my friends joined a new band and one time we went to see them play and we could hear a bass being played but no bass player on stage. At the end of the set we realised that the bass player was hiding behind a pillar on stage left as he was a bit shy.

This one sticks in my mind the most although it isn't the worst gig I ever played, my band were given a support slot at a local venue. We were all quite stoked to have a gig with our own dressing room and good sounding pa, then halfway through our set my e string breaks on my only bass (yeah I know) and the looks on my band mates faces could have killed me stone dead. I had to borrow a bass from the headliners, who were very nice, so I got to play a Musicman Stingray for the last two songs in our set. One more which was really embarassing - different band were given a slot at a local festival playing to a few hundred people, I managed to get lost/delayed and our hour long set was reduced to thirty minutes. We rush on stage without a soundcheck and our lead guitarist is tuned down half a step while me and the second guitarist are in standard tuning. After a twenty second panic of clashing chords I figure out what is wrong and try and transpose all my notes down half a step for the rest of the set. Not the best showcase you could hope for when, to be fair 200-300 paying customers were quite patient and we luckily didn't get pelted with mud/bottles/sh*t
I'm toying with a few ideas & there'll definitely be a good bit of wood visible. My ideas involve either some silver leaf or aluminium paint directly on part of the wood so you can still see the grain & finishing the whole body in a satin lacquer, or maybe something different? A play around with Photoshop is in order before deciding.
Keep us posted - looks much nicer already
