1. Lots go back to 4. You could always string the P BEAD.
  2. I love em. Expect to pay £800 upwards. There is a GB tread going.
Here we go again as a die hard four banger all I can say is that if you dont know what it is for, why the f*** did you buy it

It was a tenner. ...
Thats good enough Lots of players use 5 strings just to play everything 5 positions up where it is more comfortable and avoid changing hand postion as much. Saw a guy last night wheo never went down below the 5th fret so never played the extra low notes. 5 strings are also good if you use horn friendly keys like Bb and Eb.
  4. We will be round soon for a word. The Equality Commission.
  5. Neo = cash at the moment. The advantages of neo is obviously more with cabs with fewer drivers - see the basschat wiki for neo vs ceramic 1x12 cabs. A neo 8x10 will still be a roadie job

  7.
Looks like the 8x10 war is on the horizon though. Goody.
It wont be the first one. Whether you agree with his design philosophy or not, Bill is an expert on cabs so somebody telling him he is talking bollocks amuses me. Bill does not rate the old 8x10 either.
  8. nothing wrong with black
  9. Where is the bass in your avatar
  10.
Works particularly well with an 8 x 10.
What? The most useless cab in the world? Looks good on stage though
  11. Never seen silvery wrap
  12. Very eclectic collection there mate
  13.
The result of mixing different cabs is always unpredictable. If you like the tone you have add another 2x10, be sure to stack them on end so the four tens are on a vertical line.
Beat me to it. Dont know how the OP has managed to miss all the flame wars on mixing cabs
  14.
I'll see about bringing the LH500 to the SE bash, if anyone wants a go, depending on transport arrangements
Damn. I wont be able to find out how much better than my Shuttle it is.
  15. Hey - I am not the one going out to buy it cos its cheap and has got lots of watts. All I am saying is there is more to chosing a bass amp than that. I would not call my Genz Benz a boutique amp either, nor the EBS come to that, although they are a lot more expensive than the new Hartke range. Generally in life you get what you pay for, although this may be one of those exceptions to the rule.
  16. There are a few super combo's you could get for your budget if you buy used. The SWR Redhead, Eden Metro, Mesa Boogie Scout and Buster, and EBS Gorm are all top quality combos. Will be a bit heavier than the MB though.
  17. As many of us have active basses the question is irrelevant. Yes I do use the tone controls on my active basses. Sometime I use them alot, sometime I dont use them at all. Depends on the gig, songs, venue, what mood I am in, time of the month etc.....
  18. Alex - you of all people should know that the difference between the 350 watts of my old HD350 and the 500 watts of this new Hartke and the 600 watts I get from my Shuttle is pretty much inaudible in terms of percieved volume; and I did think the last Hartke I tried sounded quiet for the watts it was supposed to have, but that was a long time ago. Yes sound quality is a question of taste, and one mans meat is another mans poison. I liked my old EBS and my current Genz Benz cos I can hear my basses, not the amp. I have tried other rigs where everything I plugged in sounded the same, cos the sound of the amp was stronger than the sound of my basses. I presume having spent loads on a custom bass with esoteric pups you would want to hear what the bass sounds like not what the amp sounds like. I am not dissing the Hartke here cos I have not tried it, and it may have the clarity and transparity I look for in an amp, but I very much doubt it.
  19.
Limiting is a form of compression. It has a high threshold and hard compression that reduces the power amp clipping.

So it's a kind of safety device with no musical effect other than to prevent distortion and damage? Is that the kind of thing some newer amps have built in and always on eg. markbass? I don't think I'd be likely to run the LH1000 to clipping volume in a hurry, but I've always used my ears as a limiter and if I hear distortion I turn down the volume or bass eq. Sorry to sound thick - my last amp purchase was in 1985ish, a trace 150w which is what I'm thinking of replacing.
In a word yes. Lots of amps have it and lots dont. Some have a light that comes on when you hit the threshold. Peavey have had it for years and years. Some are more musical (as in you cant hear a difference) than others.
  20.
Sure has the best bang per buck for a new amp. Not sure if thats a good reason to buy one if you can afford better though.

What would you suggest as a better alternative and in what ways will it be better?
Well I would be very surprised if they sound better than my old EBS or my current Genz Benz. There is more to bass amps than just watts.

    Pedaltrains?

Thats the kind of insight I am looking for!
