He seems a good guy. But they all do until you wave cash at them. One of my favourite podcasters recently sold out and started doing ads for a gambling company. Gambling destroys lives and kills people. It really is that simple. Personally, I’d exercise some discretion in what I did if I were hugely rich and successful. Thankfully I’m neither, but I do have a clear moral conscience.

Fair point. Be sure to keep us updated with what you find OP.

Can I ask what you expect to find out? I'm not sure he'll be able to confirm whether or not John did own the bass, and even if he did, it's hardly likely to increase its value. (I say this kindly as someone who owned a bass previously played and owned by John Entwistle.) Guess it's all part of the history, but I wouldn't let this dictate whether or not you enjoy what looked to be a very lovely and competitively priced early 70s Precision.

Everyone in the world considers themselves too smart to be influenced by ads, yet spending on them goes up year on year. The fact we’re discussing the advert and using the brand name means it’s working. This is literally how it works. Lidl used to suffer from brand perception issues. Not necessarily with the quality, but middle class people were ashamed or embarrassed to shop there. The brand has successfully repositioned itself in the UK, and is now making a legitimate move for the “big 4”. Its achieved this through a combination of above the line and below the line marketing and it’s incredibly successful. In fact, I’m currently enjoying a Lidl smoothie. All hail out cut price German overlords.

Marketing doesn’t work in such a linear fashion, but it does work, or why would they pay for it? Christmas Ads are all about brand building and shifting the perception of the brand among customers. The reason you go into Lidl and don’t turn your nose up at it is the brand building Lidl has done in the UK which has been very impressive. This has helped them ride through scandals (the chicken one, for example) with little impact. I genuine despise the way that advertising in this country is considered art and somehow part of our culture, but I can’t deny it’s effective.

Any country that considers advertising as part of culture is dead. Buble is a dead eyed, fat baby man who is destroying Christmas.

Your best (and worst!) bass gear purchases of 2023?
Burns-bass replied to Al Krow's topic in General Discussion
My aluminium double bass was my best purchase. Finally started gigging on DB and really enjoying it. Worst purchase was a Cali Compressor. £260 to make me sound worse. -
I have two: Pink FSR jazz bass – used exclusively for about 30 gigs, all practices, everything HB pink jazz bass – backup The rest are superfluous. I agree you have a perfect collection.

'tis but a flesh wound...

Love the slightly naughty seller name as well. -
My favourite is this: PROFESSIONAL PLAYERS AND COLLECTORS CONSIDER THIS BASS A GREAT INVESTMENT. IT IS THE HOLY GRAIL of JACO BASSES & EXTREMELY, HIGHLY COLLECTIBLE. 100% dog poo.

He may have some funky digital effects behind the scenes, but these guys seem to me to be all about the analogue!

I've spoken to Andy no numerous occasions and he's sold things for me on commission. He seems a good, honest, and friendly chap. I have spoken with other established vintage dealers and they have all spoken positively of him. I'd happily buy a bass from him, and indeed would love to, but I don't have the cash to do so!

Man that's hard listening. I see what you mean, sounds like a sub-octave pedal. https://www.guitarworld.com/features/snarky-puppys-michael-league-im-a-4-string-guy-i-just-play-better-when-i-have-less-to-work-with "For groove stuff with sub octave, I alternate between a 3Leaf Audio Octabvre and the MXR Bass Octave Deluxe, which is super deep and warm. It shakes windows, for sure.” I reckon that's what he's using. May be he A/Bs the signal as well?

Haha, I know it well. In fact, playing the Smiths was how I learnt to play. It’s all scale stuff so as long as you can mail that, it’s not so hard. Have you tried Songsterr? I’m a massive fan of it for learning stuff. It’s an excellent resource.

That is a good bass part. As long as you know the key you’re fine as it’s all pretty simple based on that.

Sorry to hear that. Booklet on its way to Walshy as I hadn’t heard from you in a couple of days. Hope all is well and best wishes for the future.

You could get Chris’s free stand (very generous), and fit one of these (the stand has a 35mm flange so this should fit) https://pipedreamfittings.com/product/4-way-cross-with-central-tube-34mm-b34/ Then you could fit some lightweight aluminium pipe and bend it it to the dimensions of your bass, cover is in insulation and cap the ends and you’re done. Even with the pipe bender it would still cost you about £30 https://siliconehoseuk.co.uk/products/alloy-one-metre-straight-pipe?variant=42844606496999¤cy=GBP&utm_medium=product_sync&utm_source=google&utm_content=sag_organic&utm_campaign=sag_organic&gclid=CjwKCAiAvdCrBhBREiwAX6-6UtzyRuen5fACRqy8aRr43dZK5aVoH0vVfrqX_1WtEwSYuVeAcci0ARoCliIQAvD_BwE

I really hate this, and have experienced it before. I’m in one band and we all sat down at the start and agreed it was a priority for us to work together and get stuff right. They accept I’m the only one with kids, but they push me to get out and get on with stuff, which I really like. Some people, it seems to me, love the idea of a band but struggle with the reality and commitment - which can lead to stress and frustration among the others.

I use Barefaced cabs and they’re great for volume with my magnetic pickup but I don’t find they pick up on the subtleties of the acoustic bass. I know a fair few bass players now use a preamp into an FRFR speaker. These are designed not to colour the sound, but can provide the “heft” you want. I’m no expert (on anything) but I’m sure someone on here can provide some ideas on appropriate speakers for DB.

…and it will be awesome! Good luck. If there’s any string I’d be happy to break, it would be the G.
