  1. Nobody here judges you. All music is good music. I did a gig yesterday and someone came up to the singer and started telling her where she was going wrong. It was quite upsetting for her and I’d not want to make anyone else feel that way.
  2. Quincy Jones and Lalo Schiffrin - the best! I spent hours playing these (and others!). I now realise that I was over playing them and that the lines are much simpler than I originally thought. Will try them tomorrow.
  3. It’a not aimed at you. The OP seems to think that we’re making fun of his learning DB, but that’s not the case. We all offered polite and friendly advice.
  4. I’d thread cautiously and try as many as you can. I’ve had several Stingrays that (to me) have just felt soulless planks of wood. And then a few that have been amazing. Personally I found the mids from the pickup a bit too much for me. In the end I prefer a passive single coil as it’s softer and less aggressive, but that’s just me.
  5. I listened to those albums probably thousands of times when I was growing up and learning bass. Incredible bass playing. I first heard JTQ when I found this album for £3 in Woolworths and found the albums in dusty record shops over the next few years. Changed my bass playing life. Thanks Gaz!
  6. Going to spend two weeks practising double bass for some November gigs.
  7. Out tonight and tomorrow then a week off.
  8. I meant your bass probably sounds lovely! I’ve had the same bass for 21 years and it’s amazing. Love every inch of it.
  9. I think that’s because they’re free to experiment and enjoy the material not slavishly stick to it like tribute bands do. Ive not seen them but a friend who did said the musicians looked like they loved it!
  10. No problems. Joys of (formerly) being a music teacher in that you accumulate stuff. Glad to share it. Was working on some scales in 6ths yesterday from the Ray Brown book. Hard!
  11. There’s a 24 hour turnaround on payments. One assumes this is because it’s easier to do this way. I’ve sold £900 worth of junk all with no fees. I can’t complain.
  12. That’s fantastic. Stays in the country.
  13. Musical snobbery (and instrument snobbery) is utterly pointless and entirely against what should be the spirit of music making. I’ve played carved basses badly, ply basses badly and even aluminium basses badly - but I’ve had fun with other people while doing so, which is what music is about. For the vast majority of people and playing situations a ply bass is more than adequate. (The 100% ply David Gage Czech Ease bass I sold is going to be used on a global arena tour playing to more people in one day than many classical orchestras will reach in a year.) Get bass. Play bass. Love bass. If you can afford a fully carved bass then buy one. But many of us started on (and remain fans of) basic beaten up ply basses.
  14. That’s what I needed. Many thanks!
  15. Interesting.
  16. I think the HMRC stuff was a threat rather than a reality. They simply don’t have the staff to proactively search out traders
  17. Wonderful. As long as you enjoy it that’s what matters. Music isn’t a competition.
  18. It is indeed! Took the photo while I was wasting time not working.
  19. Bass cat.
  20. I gig 3-4 times a month and my current bass is a £580 Musima German ply bass. It's perfectly robust, I don't mind it it gets bashed around a bit, sounds great and is set up well. It's ideal for my needs.
  21. I've played bases made form plastic compounds (Bassix ones), alumunium ones, ply and fully carved ones. Personally, unless you need an ultra light bass that's resistant to changes in temperature and humidity (because you're gigging internationally) I'd avoid it. Instead, I'd buy a well cared for DB on here that's been well set up and sorted for a fraction of that price. When you go to pick it up, tell your wife you negotiated a £250 discount which you're going to use to treat her. Everyone wins!
  22. Agreed. It’s also very bad form to take somebody’s money before raising this issue. I can concur (having sent items too and received them from NI) that there are no charges. If the seller sees this thread, just send the bass!
  23. I’ve got a Chowny bass and need a soft case. What would you recommend?
