1. Hello All I have taken the pots and pickpups out of an old AXL fretless (neck warped) and I want to use the electronics in a Cigar Box Guitar. I have made an acoustic one already. My problem: the old bass had 3 pots and I only want one, I have removed the other two, so far so good. The earth wire originally went underneath the tail plate, this isn't option on my CBG. I am in no way an electrician so can someone offer an alternative idea for earthing tanks joe
2. just play whatever you want if they are not helpful, its then a question of who is out of tune you or them. I would go with them Alternatively play whatever and call it jazz.
3. Got bored of joining bands and quitting coz of arseholes, going solo is the way for me so much freedom, I have no one to bounce ideas off but that isn't always a bad thing
4. just take the same approach, turn up with a hoover instead of your bass and say oh sorry I forgot to bring my bass, then next time bring your bass but spend 40 minutes getting it in tune, and everytime they play a song just play the bassline to barracuda. Pretty soon they'll get annoyed with you. At that point you go full frontal mental at them, scream, shout, smash things. Just go crazy.
5. Hey, seems like you have had lots of good advice so far on this topic and can't really add much more to it. If the bass part isn't available as a tab, I sometimes find a guitar tab and then it gives you a rough idea of where your starting point would be. If no guitar tab is available look for the chords. I am learning Brother can you spare a dime at the moment on guitar, and can only find chords but I want to fingerstyle it, so at least having the chords really helps.
6. Actually that one from War of the worlds, Dur dur duuuuuuuuuur
7. I think it depends on your favourite music, for instance I would hear the first three notes of folsom prison blues and know it was that where as other people who have never even heard the name Johnny Cash wouldn't. So I think it would be really subjective however if I had to choose I would say Twinkle Twinkle (probably need four notes) Most children know that song and it stays with you. Although f one was to play ace of spades to my kids they would get it easy
8. I play everyday, but it's a fight between normal guitar and bass. Whilst the kids are still awake I generally play guitar (they like to dance about to the music) and then when they go to bed and the wife wants to watch tele I will just noodle on the bass as it is a quiet instrument. I don't really learn songs, I generally write my own. However I bought a bass guitar book with lots of J.S.Bach compositions in it and I try and learn them, I thought I was progressing nicely on one of them, then I listened to someone play it on youtube and I felt like binning my bass, the guy played the same tune I was playing at like quadruple the tempo ;(
9. Go daddy do some good hosting options for first timers, you generally have to pay for the year upfront, but then the following years are like double triple the original price. I actually know a web designer who does an all in one package for hosting/design. I can give you his details if you like.
10. Hey nice and simple website, I would say not to use free hosting though (IMO url looks amateur). The site looks clean though, I would possibly suggest linking your videos to the relevant songs in the song lists. So people can click a song and go right to you playing. Also might be worth having some customer reviews (i.e landlords ---Just make them up if needs be). I think the about the band soul have a picture and small bio for each member.
11. Just quit a band I had joined before Christmas, we did one rehearsal as a band, I had spent a few weeks listening to their ep and learned 3 songs inside out. When we rehearsed they had another 10 or so songs that I picked up easy enough. We organised another rehearsel then the drummer quit (fall out with singer) then the guitarist. So it was me and the singer, he wanted to carry on I thought fair enough, but he couldn't be bothered helping look for other musicians and wanted to just jam in his flat. This went on for a few months and I thought enough is enough. I quit and did my first gig as a solo guitar player last Friday
12.
Nice one. Same as me, bass in a band and acoustic solo Singer-Songwriter stuff. Hope it went well
Yeah it went really well, I don't have a very good singing voice, so I was expecting people to boo, and they applauded and wooped quite a bit so did wonders for my confidence. My original stuff is very sea sick steve-esque
13. Hey @PaulGibsonBass I am playing guitar couple on a beat up old Effie I've had for 20 yeas (sounds awesomely sh1t) and some on a steel string acoustic. I joined a band playing bass last year after a 5 year hiatus to have kids. I played 5 originals and 3 covers. Jobo
14. <p>So I did my first gig as a solo artist on Friday (24/06) at the night and day café. It was my first time playing solo in fornt of an audience needless to say it was nerve racking. I sat and listened to the other bands soundcheck and thought I can do this and I did. I fluffed a few times but played through. I didn&#39;t get booed (which was nice). I am feeling really positive now its time to record an EP and promote </p> <p>Jobo</p> <div style="left: -1000px; top: 8px; width: 1px; height: 1px; overflow: hidden; position: absolute;">&nbsp;</div>
15. Probably a daft question but can you not get them chipped or mark them somewhere out of sight like people do with expensive push bikes?
16. I don't think your list is as comprehensive as it could be
17. no need for links I know the songs haha. That was the first thought I had when I heard the tune especially the slap bit really reminds me to the point where I thought it was the same riff just slowed down. No need tobesrry I m often wrong....as my wife tells me
18. I have had this pedal for about 5 months and its great fun really versatile and enjoy using it. I was rehearsing with my band on sunday and for someone reason it is stuck in edit mode so it wont let me cycle through the preset but just sticks changing effects on one preset. Anyone got any ideas how to be able to cycle through the whole lot again?
19. only played 2 of these Whiskey in the jar and summer of 69. and we did them once and after that we did covers we wanted to play rather than trying to appease. My favourite cover to play live on bass is Cochise by ausioslave
20. I thought the slap bass was a re-hash of give it away, it sounds it to me anyway.
21. Hey, I am not a bass teacher by any stretch of the imagination but I can tell you from my own bass playing experience (15 years) some things that might help with what you are wanting to learn. So you mentioned you have learned all the notes up to the 12th fret. so the 13th fret on any string will be the same as the 1st fret, 14 fret same as the second. As it is a full octave. I used to struggle knowing the note names on frets Don't worry in time it will be like 2nd nature to you. Also if you know about 2 strings down 2 strings across? So on your e string (your fattest lowest string) Play the 5th fret (which is a) then go two strings down and two frets across you have an A (its a octve). Joe
22.
To which I would reply with another question: why do you want to learn these..? Is it for your own, private study, or have you a band audition lined up..? Will you be playing these with others, and if so, with whom..? Are you in any hurry, with a date in view, or looking for 'the long haul'..? Sorry; that's several questions. Well..?
Hi, i want to learn some standards so i can open my own basslines up a bit more, i find after learning a particular style or song it makes my bass playing much better. I am already in a band and write my own basslines, I am in no hurry and more than happy to take my time, to start with the basics. Thanks for your input on the other messages by the way very helpful.
23. hello all, thanks for the feedback. I suppose my question should have bee which jazz standards should I learn as someone who doesn't really know the genre back to front. For instance if I go to jazzstandards.com and look at the list of standards there are 300 songs listed ( I assume there are many more to be considered standards as well). I have mainly played, rock/blue/funk and of course original music in bands. So my knowledge of jazz is limited, in the above for instance someone mentions Autumn leaves so ill start there but any other suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks again for your time. joe
24. Hello All If there is already a thread on this please remove this one (mods). But does anyone have a good resource for Bass Music for jazz standards? Thanks Joe
25. Hello All I am looking at getting a double bass. as a beginner should I go for electric or acoustic. I am looking at buying used for cost reasons. Thanks Joe
