1. Thats not a problem I appreciate you taking the time to complete it! Thank you!
 2. Hi Everyone, I’m running a survey on bass guitar player competencies as part of my PhD research. The aim is to infer the general difficulty of a bass guitar techniques and then use it to automatically assess how difficult a piece of music is to play on the bass guitar. I’m looking for bass players of any ability or skill to help out by completing the following survey: https://goo.gl/forms/lBc2F36dr1 It should only take ~20-25mins. Thanks!! Callum Edit1: if you have decided to read the thread before doing the survey i'd like to clarify that this survey is not about sight reading at all. It is about your playing ability. I am wanting to analyse how challenging a piece of music is given the sum of the things involved in the physical playing of it. The assumptions that other people have made in this thread relating it to sight reading is likely a miss understanding introduced when I mentioned i'd be using notated music in response to ivansc's question related to the purpose of this survey.
 3.
Certainly; see attached 'pdf' (again, download and change the suffix...)
Perfect! Thank you again this is exactly what I needed!
 4.
Here you go; try these (download and re-name as a 'zip' file; it's the System that friggs up the file extension like that...)... Unzip to get the GP file + the Xml file. The first half is 'Misty', for reference, followed by the same, but with an example of pretty well every effect on the bas track. Sounds 'orrible, but you guessed that, anyway. Get back to me if there's a problem, or if you need more... Hope this helps.
Thank you! Yes definitely helps - just one thing is it possible to have the pdf/jpeg of the correctly formatted music? I'm unable to read the GPX file at present due to not having GP6! And Fretmeister, lowdown, thank you for the replies. Musicxml isn't too hard to come by, but seems support for any specialised instrument notation support is!
 5. First off if this isn't the best place for this post - mods please feel free to move/adjust/delete accordingly. Second I'm looking for someone willing to help me out by making and then exporting some guitar pro 6 files as musicxml. These wouldn't be song tabs or transcriptions, I'm needing a file that contains all of the specialised bass/guitar notations for indicating the technique e.g. slapping, popping, hammer-on, pull-offs, tapping, harmonics, deadnotes ect. that is then exported to musicxml. The reason for this is I'm wanting to know if and how guitar pro exports these notation markings into musicxml format before I commit to purchasing a copy, and unfortunately the trail version doesn't allow for any kind of exporting. I'm needing specifically the musicxml files so that I can parse and analyse them as part of my PhD research. I mention Guitar Pro 6 as my focus is on guitar and bass notations and is reasonable affordable, but if anyone is willing to help that uses a different piece of music notation software that handles bass guitar notations and can export to musicxml i'm all ears!
 6. I've just gone through the process of having my left wrist compacted - due to getting lazy with my left hand technique on both electric and upright. Having it treated and then going through the process of identifying the causes and adjusting my technique to prevent it. Without being to prescriptive of exactly how to do it (as everyone's hands are a bit different) here's are the steps i took to identify my 'optimal' left hand fretting technique:

I relaxed my fretting hand completely with my palm facing upward. I then grasped the neck of my bass and relaxed my hand and adjusted my posture, bass high, elbow position etc. until my left hand was in the same relaxed state whilst having my thumb placed on the back of the neck and fingers gentle touching the strings.
I then would start fretting notes whilst keeping my hand relaxed - note not to stretch out your fingers to cover one per fret, just fret notes that naturally fall under your fingers. Again, keeping your hand tension free, the idea here is to get an idea of the minimum amount of force needed to fret a note.
Then stretch out and start to play one finger per fret. To keep things comfortable do this where your hand naturally can spread out over the frets.
During all this time also keep a check on your thumb. Make sure its not locking up and is loose. If it starts locking up, relax your hand, do the step again but focus on keeping your thumb loose.
Last thing is to be mindful of where your strength is coming from, to keep your hand relaxed it can't come from your grip/wrist. For me I draw on double bass technique on my electric and pull the strings down using my arm.
As an extra note, I found forcing my thumb to be always level with my middle finger to be one of the points that caused tension in my wrist, naturally for me it wants to sit between my index and middle. Stretches as are great, spreading your hand and fingers out as far as they can go (without causing pain),holding them for a short period, then fulling relaxing your hand can help to warm the muscles up that you require when playing 1 finger per fret in the lower registers. Not having pain and preventing the injury is, in my opinion, worth the extra steps and additional mindfulness that all this entails!
 7. If you want more balanced support than the comfort strap - http://www.gruvgear.com/duostrap-neo i've been using one since january. Whilst a little fiddly to initial setup to the right length, i now can't go back to using a standard single shoulder strap without feeling a huge increase in tension from the weight of my bass.
 8.
Reading the OP's last post regarding the hum comming from the bridge pickup - this is completely normal as the P pickup is humbucker, so hum-canceling, and the J is single coil.

Exactly the same as my BB414. The bridge pickup is single coil and will pick up interference from dimmer circuits etc. The neck pick-up is humbucking just like a P-bass so doesn't suffer in the same way. Not a lot more you can do about it other than shielding

My BB424 has a very slight him when J pup is solo'd (as to be expected). Mind you, it is slight and I don't notice it unless I really listen for it. Is it an unbearable noise when you have yours solo'd?
I'm just wanting to add that in these basses the J pickup hums. Shielding might help, but from everything OP has said I think the main cause is going to be the j-style pickup having standard single coil hum. I've looked into trying to fix this on my BB425, including pickup replacements and even making a dummy coil to try to make the pickup hum cancelling - none really looked to be a good solution and it's now something i've just (begrudgingly) accepted.
 9. I had a 150w flight case about 7-8 years ago and it was nice and lighter than the ashdown combo I was using but I didn't really like it both volume and its tone wasn't that articulate. I ended up with a bareface compact and tecamp 500 which was awesome and more volume that I needed but I moved out the country and thought it best to sell for some extra moving money. Now you may notice (in my sig) I have a pb-100 powered cab. I needed a small lightweight amp and having a pjb bass buddy this seemed like a perfect pairing - and it is. I think phil jones upgraded the speaker and for a 100w powered speaker the size of a shoe box it is loud - easily keeps up with a drummer and full big band at rehearsals. Its really clean but has a nice punch so its clear and not sterile which the 150w flight-case tended to be to my ear. Definitely worth considering imo, and you can switch out what preamp you use with it if you want to mix things up or change your tone.
 10. Bought a French Style Double Bass bow from Steve. Great Communication, posted and arrived promptly and in great condition! Thanks!
 11. Bought Stagg EUB from Dave. Good communication, put the item on hold until I could make the trip to him and even picked me up from the train station when I came to try it out! Would happily buy from again!
 12. Oh wow, just the bass i've been looking for! You've got my interest, just wondering were about's your based? - happy to discuss via pm also!

Attached one and some others can be found Here Sorry for the delay! As for postage, i'm afraid shipping is out of the question on this I'm likely to be in the london area soon (next week or so) so could always drop off/meet up in that case.
 14. Focusrite saffire LE with drawn, Korg Electribe sold pending the usual. Korg microKontrol is still available.
 15. Traded my Tecamp puma 500 for Rich's PJB bass buddy. Great communication, quick and very painless deal. Thanks Rich!
 16. Same story as everything else i've been putting up here. I'm relocating to finland and am selling off everything that i'm not intending to take with me to free up funds to help with moving. After thinking things over I really think it is best that I sell off my Mackie HR624 MKII studio monitors to free some funds. Both are in excellent condition, sound fantastic, great for home studios. Review and more info here: http://www.soundonsound.com/sos/sep07/arti...ie_hr824mk2.htm Come with manuals and certificates and in original boxes. I'll also include my auralex mopad isolation pads and pair jack to RCA cable. Looking for £500 fo the pair ideally do not wish to split them. Collection is highly recommended as postage would require sending each speaker separately. I also have a 4 1mx 1m acoustic foam can throw these in for £50 and 4 auralex charcoal coloured corner bass traps (for £60) if you really want to go all studio setup but these are strictly collection only due to their bulk. Sorry no trades, pics on request. I'm open to offers. Cheers,
