1. Really looking forward to your review, can't wait to see how this compressor holds up and all of its features. Any chance you will be comparing it to some other compressors out there like the darkglass and Seymour Duncan studio?
2. I just got myself a ehx nano big muff, absolutely great for playing some Muse
3. My favourite guitar pedal that I use in my setup is my danelectro transparent overdrive. Works perfectly and sounds much better than most of the bass overdrives out there.
4. Does anyone have experience with both of these pedals? I am looking to add a multi fx pedal to my pedal board, as i simply cant decide on what pedal to add to the last space. How do the fx match up against each other, more looking at a live situation. I would imagine that the M5 effects would be the same as the fx on the pod HD?
5. I have had mine for just over a year now and tbh I am really happy and impressed by it (considering its a copy model and relatively cheap) Mine has been gigged fairly over the past year and I have never had any problems with it, it holds its tuning very well throughout a 4 hour gig in a crowded pub and after being knocked around. Mine however did need to be set up when i first got it, the string heights was all over the place. The stock compoents are great for what they are but i am 100% positive that if you were to upgrade all the components you would have a fantastic sounding bass. I will eventually replace the pickup and pre amp. This is currently my main giging bass but once I get my Dingwall NG2 i will happily keep it as a live back up.
6. Would love to hear how it handles during a gig, I have been looking into a new compressor and this is in the top 3
7. Thank god I read this thread, I was thinking about dropping my money on one of their octave pedals. Think I will save my money and put it somewhere else.
8. The vast majority of my tone mainly comes from my pedalboard, mainly my cs3 compressor which colours my tone in a nice way then through to my tech 21vt. I run my line 6 lowdown flat but if I feel that my tone needs a little more bass or a little more high mid I will then use that to adjust.
9. For your budget I would recommend the caline cp24, I think they are roughly £30 on Amazon. I couldn't recommend it any more, full metal housing, true bypass, 10 band eq. I have had mine for over a year now and it hasn't failed me. I am currently using mine as a slap boost.
10. I'm using a behringer chorus pedal just now, does the job but I am looking into dropping some money on a new chorus pedal. I am trying to decide between the tech 21 chorus pedal or the mxr
11. Just watched the video, I was planning on upgrading my compressor pedal to the dark glass symmetry. After that video I am gonna get this now! More options and less retail space on the board, win win if you ask me.
12. Yea I have a bunch of cheap effect pedals at the moment. I wanted to replace my old zoon pedal with a pedal board and a lot of the pedals I have I really enjoy. Recently I have been looking into more expensive compressor pedals, I am runnin a cs3 compressor (scored cheap off eBay) just now, like I said, I am happy with it but very interested into seeing what a more expensive, even a custom pedal would sound.
13. I am really interested to hear what people's opinions are on this topic. Would you you rather fork out a lot of money on a more expensive, custom, one off pedal or would you rather spend less money on a cheaper pedal? I have just started delving into effects pedals (have always been a multi effects user before) and I am interested to see if a lot of the custom pedals out there meet expectations compared to a lot of cheaper branded pedals that are out on the market.
14. How does it interact with other pedals? Fuzz, chorus, boost pedal & compressor? Would be also be interested to hear it in front of an amp and di. Where did you order them from? I really wouldn't mind getting my hands on one.
15.
Again, if you go down the multi-FX path then you could get a noise gate and a LPF for one power/size 'slot', whilst replacing whatever you take away. Some questions to OP, what effects are you using (dirt/preamps especially)?, and what power supply are you using (wall-warts/1spot+daisychain/unisolated brick/issolated brick/gigrig)?
sorry for the long reply, been internet less for the past couple of days. Never looked into lpf, didn't realise you could get them in a stomp box. So far my signal path is: bass> boss cs3 compressor > danelectro overdrive > ehx big muff > boss chorus > tech 21 sansamp v > mxr eq into front of laney rb300 watt bass head 1x15 cab. Pedals are powered of an epiphone isolated source.
16. Hi guys, just wondering if any of you guys run a noise gate pedal in your bass rig/pedal board? i am attempting to finalise a pedal board setup, which I know will never happen, and I am restricted to 10 pedals with my power source. Just wondering if it would actually be of any benefit to "sacrifice" an effect for maybe something that could clean up my sound live. cheers in advance guys.
17.
Well, Here she is ..........done two gigs with her , and I am VERY pleased with the result . Nice C shape neck profile ( I have large hands , so feels great ) , a little heavy ( just under 12 pounds ) but did not feel it during gigs , sustain is brilliant . Body and neck from Northwest Guitars , scratchplate , bridge etc from bits lying around and some parts purchased on ebay . Had to do some "tweaking " to get neck at correct angle to body to get a decent action ( put a shim in neck pocket ) even decided to put waterslide Fender Logo on headstock , and gave it 5/6 light coats of satin Laq to seal it . Really enjoyed the whole project .........I would say about £450 in all . I know you can get a secondhand Mex Jazz for about that , but its not half as much fun ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! Pete
That looks excellent! What pickups did you use? You install a preamp as well? £450 is brilliant price. At least you have something that you can say that you have built with your bare hands. I'm just starting to spec out my p bass, thinking metallic pink body with all black hardware, just trying to decide if I should go with a all maple neck or spend a bit of money and get a wenge warmouth neck.
18.
Anyone seen http://www.guitarbuild.co.uk/ ? At least the customisable options are there and you can design a 2 piece swamp ash J body, fully routed and shaped so you can do away with the pickguard and show off the wood... £160.
Never heard of that website before, just had a look around and signed up. They have some great prices. Hopefully the product will be good.
19.
Hi Guys , I have decided to "build " my own bass , I say " build " as really its an assembly , with a few vey critial holes , alignments etc . Nothwest Guitars manufacture excellent finished bodies ( gloss polyester £150 ) and necks ( satin polyester £110 ) both maple and rosewood fingerboard ALL MADE IN HOUSE . I have just purchased an Artic white Jazz Body ( gloss polyester ) and a vintage ( satin polyester ) one piece Maple Neck . By the time you purchase all the hardware , pickups etc , it does come out at about £450 ! Expensive , but , something you make to your own requirements . Beware though , aligning neck to body , and drilling for mounting plate etc HAS TO BE DONE WITH CARE . Even drilling holes and mountng m/c heads has to be done with care , as a hole drilled through the headstock or fingerboard can be VERY expensive ! Assembly so far ...................( sorry about the quality of pics , dodgy phone camera ! )
Yea I worked out the cost of all the extra components and I was roughly round the £450 mark, that's why I am wanting to get it right and not muck it up
20. If you are after a low budget eq pedal I would look at a caline Cp24. I have had mine for a couple of months now and its been excellent so far, its a real solid build for such a low price. http://www.amazon.co.uk/Caline-CP-24-10-Band-Equalizer-Aluminium/dp/B00OQ1GAJE/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1446814066&sr=8-1&keywords=caline+cp+24 I would use it after the Fuzz pedal that way you can dial out some of the harsh mid to high frequencies. Just by doing that you might find that you have enough low end with out having to boost anything.
21.
OK - I'm going to wade in my my size 12's here... If you just want to assemble a bass, but want it to look the tops, Warmoth is the way to go, but very very expensive. BUT if you want to do more than that - if you want to also do the finishing as well, and are using it as a learning / source of satisfaction with a pretty good chance of a half decent end result, I would heartily recommend the kit ranges from Gear4music here At less than £70 for EVERYTHING, except the glue, stain and varnish, you really can't go far wrong. You will want to put some better strings on and, if it turns out nice build-wise, worth considering popping some better pickups and maybe hardware. I suspect the Thomann kits are just as good but don't have first hand on those. 'The Fretboard' forum ran a Summer Challenge last year to get a Gear4music kit and either just build it or pimp it up. There were around 30 entries - including a number of basses - and very, very few quality issues reported. Most people were well impressed with the quality of the timber and machining. I know I was. I did a 6 string, which is now my main gigging guitar, and has been since I finished it over a year ago!!!! Here it is (and yes - I well and truly pimped mine up): The quality of the machining on mine was unbelievable at that price point. There are better kits around - some are stunning quality - but bang for buck and for starters, this is the way I would go... Andy
I'll have a look into the gear4music kits, ideally the bass will be used for gigs so I am wanting to put some time and money into it. I think I will go with a basic kit and work on it as appose to a warmoth as that way it will feel like there is more of "me" put into the bass. That guitar looks awesome btw
22.
Sitting somewhere between Warmoth and the Ebay kits (pricewise at least) are Build Your Own Guitars http://byoguitar.com results of which can be seen in the for sale link below. Good price, and didn't get clobbered for a huge amount of import duty
Thats a fair price, I would love to go Warmoth but the price and P&P on top makes the price go through the roof.
It depends what you want to do. You may be better off buying a reasonable quality donor bass as it will probably cost less than the individual components. Then refinish/upgrade as budget and inspiration allow. Or you could go the whole hog and find a guitar building course near you - although that will probably cost you more in the long run (e.g. just the wood for the Telecaster guitar I'm making cost me more than a brand new Squier Affinity Tele!)
An idea I had was to just use the body with the kit and maybe source a fender/warmoth neck. Although a donor bass could be a good shout. Although I am not really good with my hands so would rather pay for a cheap kit and botch it up then pay more for a donor bass.
