1. This is a much more recent ear worm. Apparently Paul McCartney loves it too. http://youtu.be/b8m9zhNAgKs
2.
The 20 year old is better in what way? And I'm certainly not going to take sides with 20 years of experience. Playing for 20 years means nothing to me. It could mean 20 years of laziness, floating in and out of one band to another and generally being a pain in the arse. Many of you are well aware of these types of "20 years experience" guys. Just making a point. Blue
I think we're both making the same point. Enthusiasm and raw natural talent can be more fun to play alongside than the guy who's been plodding along in the same rut for years.
3. I've gigged with kids who've only been playing for a year who are significantly better than others who have been playing for 20. Experience is no guarantee of quality. IMO.
4.
Alanah Miles' Black Velvet has some rasty playing on it FWIW
Apparenty that one was recorded on a synth. I was completely oblivious of that for years until I read it on here a while ago.
5. In my experience, having lived with a form of psoriasis most of my life, anything alcohol based will dry the skin out incredibly quickly. I'd go for a quick wash with soap and water every time.
6.
Sorted. Mr Andyjr1515 is taking it to be lightened and veneered. Have a feeling its going to look superb.
Now that's a major result. Love Andy's work. The man's an artist.
7. Have you thought about getting a classical guitar? Tonally quite similar to a bass and a lot easier to play chords on than a six string bass.
8. Just hope she doesn't treat herself to a new pair of earrings - crafted from your dangly bits.
9.
Horses for courses, I suppose, but the surf pearl finish is pretty awesome "in the flesh"
If was proper sea foam green I'd be delighted with it, but from what I've seen from photographs and the one video I could find (in German) on YouTube I think it might be a bit 'flash' for my tastes.
10.
It has a 1.5" nut, like a standard Jazz, and definitely feels less chunky than any other Precision I've played (though my experience of them is very limited).
Brilliant cheers, they've now move a bit closer to the top of the list. Now I need to decide if I can live with the surf pearl or whether I want to pay an extra £70 odd quid for a white one which I will definitely find more aesthetically pleasing.
11. I keep it achored on the E unless I'm playing on it, in which case I either rest my palm on the body of the bass or I sort of rest my wrist on the top edge of the basses body. I'm self taught though and have several 'bad' habits.
12. I reckon the presence of hundreds of screaming teenage girls pretty much defines who can be called a teen idol. And the Beatles had them in spades.
13.
I hate you! Now I can't 'unsee' that... I was going to go with P-Ray but I didn't want it to be mistaken with a religious message. I'll do my best to forget what you said... but the bass is already ruined for me
Sorry about that. I did wonder if I should mention it, but I have very poor impulse control.
14.
I played one of those "surf pearl" ones in a shop and it was great. Looks amazing too. I ended up going for a standard P as I didn't really want the bells and whistles (J pick up, active electronics). That said, you can (I think) switch between active and passive, so you have the best of both worlds. In short, a great sounding and feeling bass (the one I played, anyway), with a very striking finish.
I very interested in these. Would you say the neck is a standard precision or a Jazz? Or maybe somewhere between the two? I've decided to treat myself to a new PJ in January and these are pretty near the top of my list of potentials.
15. I'd have put the Stingray in before the Thunderbird. The T bird is a cult classic, but I'm not sure it was ever a game changer.
16. London Marylebone to Leamington is about 1h 30 minutes, then it's about 5 minute a in a taxi to Bass Direct.
17. The P-Sting? Sounds a bit like an STD.
18.
sorry Cato, possibly the worst Ramones track ever
Fair enough. It's a bit of a departure for them, and I have wondered if Joey was the only actual Ramone on that particular track, but personally I think it's close to the pinnacle of the Phil Spector collaboration, surpassed only by Rock 'n' Roll radio. (Honourable mentions for Danny Says and Rock 'n' Roll high school). Edit. Maybe this Ramones cover is more up your street? http://youtu.be/fGWR3uI3Qa0
19. How could I have forgotten this? http://youtu.be/PqZmJ7RGAP4
20. This may divide the room, possibly leaving me on my own in a corner, but I really like it. http://youtu.be/jRk5Gjl_cAg
21. Flip flops for drumsticks. Never seen that before.
22. Funnily enough I had my first go on a cello on boxing day. After getting my head round the tuning difference it was actually fairly easy to get a tune out of, finger style only of course, I reckon bowing is probably a whole art in itself. It's made me seriously consider trying a proper double bass, or at least a EUB, at some point in the near future.
23. After 25 odd years of playing bass and skinny string guitars, but never in front of my family, after an impromptu boxing day jam with various brother in law's and friends of the family(who to be fair have only been playing for a fraction of that time), it turns out that they're quite impressed with my skills.
24.
No problem, thanks for correcting me. In terms of value and utility. Hell, my Gibson Les Paul Gold Top bass and my Gibson Custom Shop ES-335 bass cost quadruple the price of my G&L ASAT. However my G&L sees the lion's share of my gigs. Granted my LP and ES-335 are the coolest looking basses on the planet,IMO. And I only use them for their looks. Blue
Horses for courses. I like your MIJ 50s Precisions a lot, but if was to choose one bass from your collection, based purely on aesthetics, I'd take the ASAT every time.
25. I'm going to risk what little cred I have by saying I quite like his most recent stuff. He's been responsible for some utter sh*te as well but I think underneath the teen idol image (which he apparently has come to loathe) is a better than average vocal and song writing talent. There's also Youtube evidence that he's a decent guitar player.
