1. Hi all, I've been doing a lot of repair work for a local studio and they've asked me to put some sort of protection system on all thier PA speakers. This is mainly due to idiots putting bass's, synths and kick drums through what should be only for the vocals and accoutsic's etc. ie the usual array of 300-400w peaveys and carlsbros.....and compact 12 and 15 cabs. Most of their cabs have got protection on the tweeters but what is the best way to protect the bass drivers? Is a fuse sufficient? Or is there a way other than using an amp with a self limiting system? Any help here is most appreciated. Cheers Just
2. Hi folks I've just been offered a 77 Fender Bassman 100w head. Although it was initially brought to me for repair-needs a new set of valves and some resistors replacing-about £80+ ish to fix, I have no idea what its value is. Does anyone out there know what the value of these old beasties is? I'm very tempted as I've been hankering after a valve amp for some time. Cheers Just Ps Have just seen a completly original mint condition 1960 bassman combo on ebay. They are asking over £9000......
3.
Minimal number of windings round the peg helps too.
+1 Seems to be the key to these things and also get the string to be allmost in line with the nut slot as it starts the first turn on the peg if that makes sense. If there's too much break angle the nut catches the string and it never comes back in tune, although the graphite will certainly help. And defo no overlaping string on the peg. Cheers Just
4. There's a shop near me that has a 3x15 one of those. Makes an ampeg 8x10 look a tad lacking in stature. I've no idea how you'd move it. Cheers Just
5. Hmmm would be interested to see if it really handles 600w rms at proper low frequencies. And does it really go down to 45hz? (it seems to have the same response and sensitivity as alot of their other cabs). Its still only another cube with 4 speakers in it. I'm not knocking Markbass in particular but its nothing we havent seen in the last 25 years. It would be nice if manufacturers could be bothered to be a bit more radical or original in their designs, and maybe a bit more honest with their spec information.
6. Nice job, I'm seriously considering one of these myself. Which Hartke is it? I've been using a 3500 for about nine years and love it to bits but my old diy 1x15s are just abit too heavey and cumbersome even though they sound the biz. Was just wondering how well the cab handles the full output of the amp as the hatrke's do always seem to have plenty of headroom. Do the drivers fart out at all at high volume and low notes? Cheers Just
7. Hi a friend of mine sent me this a while ago.http://www.musikding.de/product_info.php?cPath=103&products_id=1033 I am interested in doing something similar myself and was planning to do it all valve based on the front end of the mesa bass 400 but minus the graphic eq. I'm still looking into sourcing all the components but the total so far come to about sixy quid and theres still stuff to consider. It'll probably end up in a head using an omp power amp module. And then a cab to match. I'd interested to see if anyone else out there is putting together their own amp. Were you thinking of using valve or transistor? If your into valves then check out diytube website theres some good advice to be had. Also look at shematic heaven, loads of stuff on there. Cheers Just
8. I need to know because I'm in the process of putting together diy Stingray using an original neck. A friend has done most of the bodywork with the exeption of the neck, control cavity and pickup routing. Ive got a seymor duncan pickup on order and would like to get the position right. Also if anyone can tell me the depth of the neck pocket that would be usefull too. Cheers Just
9. Hi folks can anyone tell me how far it is from the twefth fret to the first row of polepieces on a Stingray 5? Cherrs Just
10. Hi all, even though I've been in the electronics game for some years, I still find a confusing amount of claims by manufacturers about their products and I 'm still in search of the best solvent for cleaning up noisey pots, sliders and jack sockets. Can anyone recomend the best? Cheers Just
11. Have you looked on the Watford valves site? They've got just about everything, including cryogenic treated valves which apparently sound amazing. Does anyone know what happened to the sticky that compared different valves? It seems a shame its not on here anymore seeing that someone put a lot of time into it. Good luck in your search for perfect valve tone. Cheers Just
12.
Damn, it broke off about 3mm down from the head... there's no way i can get some pliers on the end of that. I could ask my dad to drill it out for me maybe. Also the top of my tobias is completely flat so i dunno. the bridge is pretty crap anyway.
You may be able to get a small diameter easy out. Its basically a self tapping screw that has a left handed thread. You drill a small pilot hole and then screw in the easy out. When it bottoms out inside the sheared screw it starts to wind out. The best people to ask about these would be an engineering tool supplier. If you drill out the existing screw you may not get out all the metal and still not be able to put in a new screw anyway. Good luck. Cheers Just
13. Hi all, where is the best place to get hold of ampeg spares? In particular I'm after the inductor that controls the midrange frequencys. This is for a DIY preamp build, though It'll probably get mated to 100-150 w tube power amp or a 300 -400w solid state. Cheers Just
14. Yeah go for it, had one for nine years now and its never once given any trouble. Just treat it to a nice quality tube for the pre amp, the ones they fit as standard dont do it justice. Find a nice mullard.
15. Hi, The first one is kinda medium size but you need to calculate the internal volume and then match it to a driver with the right characteristics to work well. I think the program to help you is called winisd (someone put me right) although it may tell you your cab is on the small side for the majority of drivers. The second cab is huge. Better of getting a BFM O15. More work and cost but guaranteed result. Cheers Just
16. Why not look at some of the drum hardware cases, a lot of those have wheels and as someone pointed out its gonna be pretty heavey with 10 mic stand in.
17. Hi I do repairs as a sideline.I'm based in Redfield Bristol. Cheers Just
18. On the blue AAran site there's only £2-3 difference in price so you might as well go for the better power handling option. The 2510 is also more efficient/sensitive.
19. Hi, I'm struggling to find a 10nf electrolytic but have found 100v 10uf elecs that fit the physical size you mention. Its possible that laney have a missprint on their diagram, although get them to cross check the revision/mod state of your amp.Sometimes when a design is updated the components get re numbered so if your amp is say revision A they might be looking at a later drawing. Hope that makes sense. I would'nt fit a different value component until I was 100% sure. The cap I did find was in cpc. Pt no CAO4963. Make sure you get the polaity right. Good luck Cheers Just
20. Hi folks just spotted this on the dredded ebay.Would have it for myself but have no cash and my 3500 is loud enough. Item number: 160203513323 A nice amp for someone. Cheers Just
21.
as above - but if you do not know what you are doing with valves - dont touch it! these things are lethal in the hands of amatures!
Indeed, I used to work on studio photo flash systems, so I know about lots of voltage and and learned very quickly too after a couple of mishaps. Defo not a job to do after a lunchtime drink.
22. Cheers folks,a very usefull link that one. Cheers Just
23. Hi I've been asked to repair and amp and one of the valves is a 7025. I've told that this is the same as a 12AT7 or a ECC82. Can any of you valve anoracks clarify this or point me in the direction of someone who can? Its actually a guitar amp (Fender Quad reverb..a 4x12 100w combo...bloody hooooge) but does sound rather nice. Cheers Just
24. Hi all my band Djute is Headling at the Croft in Bristol on fri 25th jan.Hope to see you there. Cheers Just www.myspace.com/djute
25. Yeah defo all the advice so far is good. The more pre production work you do the easier the recording will be.Its very easy to waste lots of time and money in a studio and come out with something your not 100% happy with. Make sure everyone aggrees with the plan and tell the engineer what your looking for, otherwise he'll just do the best he can. Make sure all the guitars are well set up especially with regard to intonation and also that the drums are tuned properly and that the drummer arrives on time cos setting up the drum sound usually takes the longest. Dont forget to take plenty of food, there's nothing less productive than everyone trying to survive all day on coffee and fags. Good luck, hope all goes well. Cheers Just
