1. Try the Ibanez BTB - You can get the cheaper version for a bit more expensive than you are talking about. I find them to be great quality for the price.
2.
It used to be that when you bought ProTools you were buying into a standardised software/hardware system where all the component parts were made by the same company and were designed to work together. Now there's a variety of different versions of ProTools and a choice of "compatible" hardware from manufacturers who are not Digidesign. While this puts the platform within the reach of those without big recording studio type budgets, it does add in a whole load of extra variables that can make the system less than ideal.
Hold on, ignore parts of my above post. They now make a version of ProTools that allows you to use other hardware? I looked on the Digidesign site a while ago, but I got the impression that they still only allowed use of Mbox etc hardware. I;m somewhat of a recording novice, though, so if you could give me some info on this, it would be greatly appreciated.
3.
Lwhen it's replaced I'll go for a FireWire box, something like a Focusrite Saffire.
Good choice. As far as I am concerned, the Focusrite preamps in their saffire stuff blow away the Digidesign hardware. Pity it means you can't use ProTools (since Digidesign are bastards), but you can still use Logic/cubase etc at least. I use a macbook at the moment, only got it 2 days ago. Once I get the money (probably next summer, lol, I'm just becoming a student haha) I'm planning on buying the saffire PRO 10 I/O and Logic Express. And then hopefully more stuff along the way!
4. I don't have experience with it, but M Audio stuff SHOULD work with logic. Need to check with someone else though. I would reccommend Focusrite stuff when it comes to Firewire interfaces/preamps - take a look/read at the Saffire, it seems like it'd suit you. Expensive (ish), but great quality. Are you going to BUY logic? It's like £600, which sucks. I wish I could afford the full verison. Hope that helped, a bit, haha. Dan
5. At £1300, I would forget about Yamaha/Ibanez/Warwick etc, and get yourself a custom bass.
6. Well, I ordered markbass rack ears off them about.......oh, a month ago? They were meant to arrive on the 30th or so, and now I have been told 27th of August. Which is very annoying. I guess I'll just have to be patient
7. I use Allianz Cornhill - Not had anything nicked yet, but it seems like a pretty good policy (although, I'm not very trusting of anyone when it comes to insurance....) we'll see how it holds up if anything DOES get nicked.
8. That'll look awewsome if it's done well. Flamed Maple would look great!
9. Pretty small pic, but I thought I'd put it up anyway. Alan spent the past couple of days building necks, and I happened to get very lucky, because he managed to fit mine in......pretty quick progress considering I ordered it on Sunday!
10. Yeah......I think that cut is good, beacause of the light line that runs through it.........so when it is book matched, in theory, the light part should run through the middle of the body.
11. The body woods Black Limba at the back, then the Purpleheart veneer, then Cocobolo top.
12. Awesome, absolutely awesome. I love the look of the sassafras, I was thinking about getting it myself, but the cocobolo really stood out as soon as I saw it! Can't wait for mine to get underway
13. Yeah, it is hard to tell. I thought the basses were much bigger in size, but once I got to Alan's shop I discovered that they aren't quite as big as they seem. No bad thing in my book!
14.
Spalted Maple fretless fingerboard? Are you sure that's a good idea? As far as I have understood it, spalted maple is rotten maple, and won't hold together - it'll turn to dust if you breathe on it. Will it be treated with some magic chemical stuff?
Not to Worry, it's semi spalt, semi flame, and it's acrylic impregnated with that monomer stuff that fills the pores and makes it very hard. Thanks for the concern, though!
15. Sorry........my friend won't have the cash for this any time soon unfortunately. Best of luck with selling it, though.
16. Man, check out www.fastfude.org/forums For a Northern Irish player, you'll have more luck there.
17.
Excellent, congratulations! did Alan still have the stock fretless for you to try it on? I thought you were wanting a rosewood board, what changed your mind? Did you take a camera to get photos of the woods you chose or do they need to be shipped in?
Well, He didn't have a stock fretless, but he had a fretted SC recurve to try it out on, and that more than met my expectations, and that was only with like 15 minutes playing around with the thing! I just had a few ideas for woods, but these totally changed once I got there. The reason I was going to get a dark board was because I originally was thinking of a spalted maple top or something like that, but then Alan managed to change my mind by producing a beautiful piece of Cocobolo.....therefore I decided a light fingerboard would give a better contrast. It is also a really nice piece of maple, looks wise. I didn't take photos, I was going to, but in the end didn't bother to even get the camera out of the bag. He has all the woods he is using for my bass in stock already, which is great, because I know exactly what is going into the bass. Now I just need to send a cheque off for a deposit, it will be done today or early tomorrow!
18. Well, I finally got the ferry over to see Alan, and it was awesome. First thing I have to say is that he's a great guy, seems like he REALLY knows what he's talking about, and the woods and basses that he has look (and sound) great. After much wood-picking, questioning, and the like, I have finally decided on (roughly) the following specs: Model Recurve single cut Fretless Number of strings 6 Scale 35 Body core black limba • Top cocobolo • No back (I like the limba just fine ) • Veneer purpleheart OR black ash • Cavity cover mac ebony • Neck woods. 7 piece Maple/bubinga with a mac ebony centre • Fingerboard spalted maple • Headplate cocobolo • Backplate mac ebony • Heel mac ebony • Veneers purple heart / black ash? • Width at nut 54 mm • String spacing at nut 9 mm • Fretboard radius flat • Side dots Mother Of Pearl • Profile asymmetric • Hardware colour black • Bridge Type A • Bridge string spacing 17 mm • Tuners Ultralites • ACG pickups FB • ACG pre-amp Yes • Coil switching Yes • 18 volt Yes I can't wait to get a render and all made up, then once Alan gets it underway (he's got alot of basses on at the moment) I'll post some pictures and that. P.S. THAT PREAMP IS BLOODY AMAZING!!!
19. 95% of the time I use my fingers. If I need a picky sound for certain parts of songs I just use my nails, but if I need that sound throughout say, 3 or 4 songs worth of stuff, I use a pick. Wouldn't want to break a nail!
20. Is this the older model, or is it the new one? They are just slightly different in design, but I am just wondering. I have a guitarist friend who might be interested, if you're willing to ship to Northern Ireland. Let me know which version, and give me 3 or 4 days to get back to you ^_^
21. For the price, I don't think it is possible to beat the Ibanez Gary Willis bass. The cheaper model can be bought for around £500, maybe less if you shop around, and it has a ton of "mwah". I haven't played the more expensive one, but it's definitely more than a grand anyway. Really nice basses, I would have bought one myself had I not wanted a six string. Don't be put off (as many bass players are, for some reason:s) by the fact that it's an Ibanez. Great bass! (P.S. I am not an Ibanez sales employee, haha) Daniel
22.
I don't think you were hijacking it at all. I think it was a useful addition to a very useful thread. I just work on the basis that the one on the left controls the preamp stage and the one on the right controls the power amp stage.
+1 On both counts.
23.
Nah the effects wont be cancelled out.
Haha, I think I misrepresented myself. I meant the effect of getting "stereo delay" etc would be cancelled out, as the speakers would have little distance between them. Not the whole effect being removed, haha. Cheers for the help
