  1. Sold Sean some strings, smooth transaction, no issues. Thanks Sean!
  2. From a practice point of view lockdown has been a positive for me. I’ve taken on a teacher, and have sectioned off an hour a day to practice (which I often use!). As a result my walking skills have gone through the roof, comparatively speaking.
  3. The Soul Vaccination live album is fantastic. One of the albums that brought me to TOP. Saw them a couple of times, once at the Astoria and then at the Indigo2 I believe. Incredible live band. Rocco was one of the greatest ever. Everyone talks about the muting technique but his overall sense of feel was insane. Rocco + Garibaldi 😍
  4. Thank you! It’s a pretty old video now. We’re miming but the soundtrack was definitely recorded with this Precision.
  5. Thinking about it I don’t actually have a box. Could wrap the hard case in packing film, but I’m not sure whether this would pass a courier’s packaging requirements.
  6. Blink and you’ll miss it! SOLD pending the usual.
  7. Ahh I'm annoyed I forgot that! Thanks for reminding me. 4.4kg, or around 9lb 11oz.
  8. Right now I would say they have a bit less zing than Chromes but are still quite bright... I can't comment on what they sound like settled in as I've not got that far! But so far I think they're a good halfway house, like if you want an old-school flatwound sound but also need to get a fairly bright slap sound occasionally.
  9. I'm really not sure how long I've had this, I would have bought it in the mid 2000s. This is the second time I've sold it! I bought it back after the first time because I missed it, but it has subsequently sat in its case for years as I moved towards more Fender-ish stuff. But it is a LOT of bass for the money. Think BBNE2 on a budget. The only real issue with it is that the bass control doesn't really boost the bass, so it may be that it needs some work done on the electronics. TBH it never bothered me as I always used my amp/preamp if needed. There is some buckle rash/scratching on the back of the bass, especially on the plastic control cavity. The finish has also gone a bit shiny under the popping area around the neck pickup; this bass has been played. There are 3 small nicks on the back of the neck which I have tried to show in the photos. They are maybe BARELY noticeable when playing. Weight is 4.4kg or around 9lb 11oz using bathroom scales. It will come in a basic hard case. £500. I’m happy to talk about couriers and arrange one at your cost. I would rather have it collected but I don’t think Boris wants us to meet up at the moment.
  10. These only have about 10 hours playtime on them. A bit more flexible than Chromes, and a completely smooth surface. I really like these but I’m moving back to rounds. Cut for a 34” 4+1 headstock. £15 + postage
  11. CURRENTLY ON HOLD This one hurts but GAS is a GAS and must be obeyed. This is one of the American Deluxe line, which I think was being rebooted at that time. Active/passive switching, 3 band EQ, passive tone control. I have owned this from new (Aug 2011). It was my main bass for a while but has had a fairly easy life, especially since I moved back to 5 strings 3 years ago. A few dings on the body including one on the front, but nothing I can see on the neck. I had copper shielding installed shortly after I got it as it was pretty noisy, that took care of it and I never had any issues with hum or interference etc on stages. Can be heard here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TSf7psI_xyk I fitted a Hipshot Xtender when I bought it, I will include the original tuner. Weighs around 10lb going by the hallowed bathroom scales method. Comes with original hard case, in good condition. Now £800. I’m happy to talk about couriers and arrange one at your cost. I would rather have it collected but I don’t think Boris wants us to meet up at the moment.
  12. La Bella 760FL set. Uncut but opened... kind of a long story. I had a faulty G string on an earlier set. La Bella made it right and sent me a new G, but in the meantime I had raided this set for its G string. The G string being sold here is the replacement sent by La Bella. £25 firm + postage
  13. D'Addario Chromes 5 String Regular Light set ECB81-5 (45-65-80-100-132) Cut for 4+1 headstock (Carvin SB5000, 34", strung through bridge). No more than 5 hours play on them. The silk on the B string at the end is quite frayed, as a result of having to get it through my Carvin's bridge. £25 plus postage
  14. Thanks. Really really tempting. Would need to sell something first though.
  15. Hi Gaucho... sorry to be annoying but do you know what the weight is?
  16. Finally got round to taking my Elixirs off and putting my Markbass LongEvo set on. It’s worth remembering when I’m comparing them that the Elixirs were 4 months old and, while not dead by any means, definitely not new. The LongEvos seem a tiny bit more grabby in feel than the Elixirs, which is to be expected from new strings. Other than that the feel is quite similar. I like a high tension string and these don’t disappoint. Output level pretty much the same, possibly a tad higher with the LongEvos. The biggest difference is in the tone, where the LongEvos seem to have more presence in the low end. The full spectrum is there, they just seem a bit more authoritative in the low frequencies. Not quite what I was expecting vs old strings, but I like it. They don’t seem boomy or flabby, just a tight, full low end. If this is the tone I can expect to hang around for the next few months I think I’m onto a winner. B string sounds good and works well with the other strings (i.e. tone wise it’s pretty close to E and A strings) Not enough of a difference to write off Elixirs forever, and future decisions may come down to price as much as anything, but right now I’m leaning towards the LongEvos. EDIT: Actually take all the above with a giant pinch of salt. Turns out my main cable has been dying a slow death unbeknownst to me. It was killing all the top end. Classic example of ‘boiling frog’ - it was so gradual I just didn’t notice. I thought all my work on technique was really paying off with a drastic reduction in finger noise. New cable and BOSH there’s that finger noise again! Turns out I don’t know what anything sounds like anymore so don’t look to me for advice in this instance. I’m off to retrain my ears. Bugger.
  17. My position has always been that having the same bass as another player won’t make me sound like that player, so why am I now doing searches for used Ibanez basses? 🤔
  18. Any idea which electric bass Dave Swift was playing last night on Jools for the Celeste performance? Sounded really really good (as he always does of course).
  19. I’m taking a belt and braces approach. 1. I’m watching this documentary 2. I received this excellent looking book for Christmas: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Jazz-Gary-Giddins/dp/0393068617 3. Sep-Dec this year I took a History of Jazz online course through the VSO school in Vancouver, which I think was actually largely based on the above book. I’m hopeful that with this three pronged approach, some of this information might actually stick in my thick skull 👍
  20. Do we NEED 5 string basses? Well no, but then we don’t need any of this. No-one held a gun to our head and said we have to play bass. None of us actually NEED to play music at all*. We could choose some other way to express ourselves. If we accept this, we see that playing bass is about choices. Some of us choose different approaches. None are wrong. “Need” suggests an objective binary (either you need it or you don’t). It’s not that simple. What do you want? *I know for a lot of people it’s a living. I’m talking about the decision initially to pursue music as a career over other occupations. I’m aware that there are many who are now “tied in” to music, and for whom playing is not a choice. I’m also aware this is a slightly smart-alec answer
