1. Just watched the Musicare gig honouring Springsteen (recorded over the weekend off Sky Art channel). Some very good music, including some nice bass by a mature (!?) guy sporting a shortish beard/'tash, wearing a bowler hat (most of the time) and playing what appeared to be a Danelectro Longhorn to good effect. Anybody else see this and know whether it was Garry Tallent?
2. Mine works fine on my acoustic guitar but on the bass it often randomly decides not to give a reading. Haven't had time yet to establish whether there's any pattern behind the randomness, as it were. But, apart from the fact that it doesn't work (on the bass), I like it! Must say, apart from the trusty plug-in unit with selectable bass mode that I've had for years, my experience of tuner reliability on basses has not been good (needles needles jumping around all over the place etc).
3. Bumpety-bump - no SG lovers out there
4. Come on guys - this really is a great bass in top condition! Here's a review from just after it was released. http://www.musicradar.com/reviews/guitars/gibson-sg-reissue-bass-26086
5. Sorry Stephen. I'm not very good with names so please apologise to the little fella on my behalf; but you can tell him that I'll never forget his face!
6. Nipped up the road last night to meet Stephen (not forgetting Scottie dog Fergie) and try a Chowny. Very impressed - a quality piece of kit that's a really nice player. Based on last night, I'd say anybody who's ordered should give themselves a pat on the back.
7. Thanks discreet, just ordered one!
8.
Well, if you're enjoying bass then you could always find a new slightly better organised band who need a bass player and focus on them as your main outlet for bass playing. If your current band are still messing you around you can always leave. I'd start looking for a new band who have roughly the same ethos that you do. It doesn't mean you have to walk away from your current band, but if they're still messing around in 6 months you aren't left feeling like you've wasted half a year.
+1 I have never looked back after switching from guitar to bass under similar circumstances - and that was in 1964 btw!!
9.
Surely it's in Durham, Durham. Durham, Durham, Durham, Durham, Durhaaaaaaam.
10. Just in case anybody's interested, I've got a spare (unused) scratch plate for a Les Paul Triumph (same as the one pictured). PM me! 11. And here they are: Forgot to mention in my OP that I'm not up for trades thanks, and would be willing to arrange delivery at cost to buyer. OK everybody, just form an orderly queue please (I wish!!) Seriously though, you won't be disappointed as this SG looks, plays and sounds great. All right, so that's thrown me - getting an error message saying that the post is too short! What to do now... talk about the weather maybe? Let's try again...
12. NOW GONE!! NOW £500!! Decided to rationalise my modest collection, so I'm selling the Ebony black SG I bought new in 2008. Having been respectfully owned and lightly gigged, there are no dings or scratches (same applies to the OE shell case inside and out). The only marks are the light surface scuffs you can't avoid with normal careful handling and are only visible on the closest inspection. Although fine as purchased, once played in this bass was professionally set up by Martyn Booth (ex-Gibson, now independent luthier) and remains straight and true. I'm not a sweater, so all metalwork and strings are in good order. This is just a heads-up in case anyone out there is itching to pull the trigger on an SG deal. I'll try and take/post more pics later today. http://i1149.photobu...zpsvq2gnuho.jpg
13. Thanks Will, let me see what I can organise - might be a while though as my mate is down in Herefordshire building a house!!
14. Will, I'm down in Somerset, so a try-out would be a bit tricky! Do you ever get down this way? If not I'll maybe buy on spec and get my (non-musician) mate from Rochdale to collect. Trouble is I'm a sucker for quirky short-scale basses. Anyway, I could always use it as the basis for a project of my own assuming it is structurally sound/straight. Does the truss rod still work?
15. Is the sound/action good enough to gig?
16. In my experience, Chinese quality is often pretty damn good nowadays. Obviously, there will be exceptions - as Muppet rightly points out that there are with MIA stuff. For me the beauty of the Chowny deal is that Mr C comes across as the sort of guy who knows how to spec a good bass, has a personal relationship with the Chinese manufacturer, and takes personal responsibility for ensuring that each bass he ships is up to snuff. If Scott Whitley manages to do the same with the SWB-1 he's commissioning from the same manufacturer, then us short-scale fans will have two great instruments to choose from - both offering exceptional value for money backed up by personal service. How good is that?!
17. I think it's good to be open to stuff that is thought-provoking, arouses strong feelings and stimulates debate. In any case, we're free to choose whether we perform/listen to this and other songs - no-one makes us or stops us. I was recently discussing performing Sympathy For The Devil with a guy that I knew was an active christian. When I asked him whether he was ok with that, he said: "Hey, it's just a song!" I thought was fair enough.
18. Great gesture - just hope that deserving owners aren't too shy to step up to the plate.
19. Thanks Scott - I thought the Roto's sounded OK on your demo vid. I'd be interested to hear how the Jazz Flats compare when you get some on.
20. Great vid Scott - what made you go for one of your least-favourite sets of flatwounds?
21. Interesting to see how the song found its way to what is definitely the right tempo. You have to wonder why Bill was side-lined tho - surely that bass part wasn't beyond his capabilities at that point?!
22. What a nice, NICE bass is this!! Very tempting... especially following Scott's recommendation.
23. "There are a few Stones tracks where Bill is off making the tea when the bass in being done..." Isn't that just typical of the way us bass players are under-valued within the band. I bet when Mick Taylor went off to make the tea the lads politely declined Bill's offer to do the lead break and waited til he came back .
