1. To my eyes the B and A string look in on the Teal one but the other three are out. I guess at the end of the day its not so much the tone, but how much are we willing to pay for bad workmanship.
2. This is how it should look. I know this is a DJ5 and the OP posted to the updated JO5 but still, a jazz is a jazz.
3. wow, what an open minded thread. Why do people have to belittle others for liking something different?
4.
Dave Bass had a DJ5 and the pups lined up great. AFAIK, the other Lakland Jazz type basses they have in stock all have a similar issue, whereas earlier Laklands did not. Possibly they havent spec'd the new Hanson pickups correctly?! The thing is, the new CV Squiers rarely have this problem, so why should this? It looks 'ok' in the picture, but in the flesh the G string is actually towards the bottom of the last pole piece on the bridge pup...off by about 4-5 mm.
Yep, no issues with that bass at all. And then it all went down hill. The DJ5 had Hansons in it, the bridge pup was slightly longer and both lined up perfectly. I even played a JO5 just before i got the DJ5 and that too was spot on. Its really weird isnt it. It seems like a lot of the mid/higher end basses are having this problem, yet the cheaper ones are fine. My Squier CV J is spot on, as is my HW-one Jazz. My old HW-1 Jazz was fine. Even the MIM 70s' classic i had a few months ago was spot on, yet all 3 of the MIA's were out. And now Laklands. To be honest i dont think it makes any difference to the tone. And i would happily live with it (now) if the bass was good in all other respects.
5.
Oh boo-hoo. signed Angry of Aberdeen
Doesn't stop me spending way more than i earn though ;-)
6. In your case i would do exactly the same. My problem was just finding a plain black one. If i was going for a tort or pattern then i think i would steer clear of the cheaper ones. Its great you can just pop round too them. Looking at finishes etc on line doesn't really give a good indication of how things will look in the flesh. Its funny but living in the centre of london you would think i would have everything on my door step but its not like that and quite frustrating.
7. Sims are great but as you say, not the cheapest. I got them to make me a blank PG for my old DJ5. On top of the cost they charged, i also had the cost of sending my original one to them. I would use them again for a custom PG if i had to, but considering they wanted £45 + postage for a B/W/B MIA one i went to WD music and got one for £15. I really didnt see any big difference (or any IIR) between the DJ5 PG and the WD music MIA one.
8. Have a look at WD music. They seem to have a lot of PG's and prices are pretty reasonable IMO.
9. Although ive never had to fly with a bass its always worried me that i would get to the gate with my bass in a gig bag, intending to take it on board and told i would have to put it in the hold. It all sounds a bit hit or miss to me.
10.
Funny...I met her at one of my shows. She likes bass players and speaks russian..
Yeah. i only dumped her when i found out "she" used to be called Ivan ;-)
11.
gone..binned her.
...its my ex
12.
She is so dumped.....
Nah mate, you have her, she cant even iron my gig shirt properly.
13.
Did you want me to bring a bass down for you to try Dave? I dont mind...as long as she is in the house.
Well ill be out but im sure she will make you welcome.
14.
Failing that, I can't see what else it could be..!!
Its probably because your using a picture of my girlfriend :-)
15.
Thanks Dave, I have one at home which I think should fit. If not, will be in touch mate
No problem. I also have one that will take a standard sized one for double boxing if you need it. I guess taking it on board in a soft gig bag is an option but ive never flown with a bass so cant really advise.
16. Dont forget ive got some shipping boxes if you need them Clarky (yeah, still tying to get rid of them).
17.
Do you act and dress the part or just play the songs? The full monty. If it's just playing the songs it's a COVERS band NOT a tribute...
which could actually mean any old street clothes, depending on who the tribute is. I dont see many acts these days that make an effort to get dressed up. I guess that makes it easier for Tribute acts.
18. I had a very early JV P. Black with maple neck. I sold it to the bass centre a few years ago and was told by Chris (the tech) that its really just the neck thats the selling point, although they are very good basses. I had changed all the hardware, inc pup but they still gave me a great price. Probably 2.5 time what i paid for it (from them funny enough) back in the 80's.
19.
Thanks buddy Hope you are well, I will PM sometime soon to catch up.
No problem, catch up with you soon. For what its worth my old Wellah band was more a tribute to Weller's song writing than trying to look like him so that doesn't really count. I quite fancy forming a Rock Bitch tribute band though
20. Hi Michael. We had a bit of a discussion here a little while ago. Although not exactly what your asking some good points were raised. Backing a tribute artist
21. Now gone, sold privately.
22. I dont like Warwicks but i know if i click on that link ill have to have one lol.
23. I did my first gig with my BDDI last night and it was a mixed bag. First off the venue was an old castle with a high wooden, very live stage. my rig was sitting in front of but not in) a bay window. I also didn't have my Gramma pad with me. So, i expected the worse. To be honest i dont think it mattered what i did, the tone was boomy and muddy on stage, and quite toppy off it out in the room. I did use the BDDI all night though, but with quite different setting to how i normally set my BDI21. I made the most of it and i guess the BDI21 wouldn't have been any different. Im happy with it though, it does seem well built (although lighter than my BDI21) and did the job of fattening the tone. I kept the blend to around 25-30%. Normally i would have it pretty high but there was already too much low end. Back to normal gigs this weekend coming so ill be able to judge it a bit better. One question. With the level knob at minimum there is still some audio. Is this how it should be? Not a big deal as i can imagine turning it right off anyway. Im going to try and keep off this forum as much a si can this coming week, its costing me too much ;-)
24. Are we talking about these? Well someone was going to do it so i thought i would get in first. Just my way of subscribing to this thread. Quite interested in these basses now, mainly because ive always hated the look of them in the past but now im beginning to understand the attraction....sort of.
