Cheers, yes, we are the heart and soul of the party :-) Then again, if you could see what i could see you wouldn't be smiling either. you are right of course, that's not a Peavey, it is indeed an Ibanez I had just been looking at a Peavey bass when i typed that. Ill change the post.

Yep, its me posting shots of me. Taken by Fran (Grandwazoo) at a pretty down market social club in South London last year. I dont smile a lot on stage, not much to smile about really :-) This was the first time i had played a 5 string for years, let alone a wonky one. This was also GW's bass, his new (to him) Ibanez PJ. Much more my thing.

I know what you mean. Ive come to the conclusion that an amp that has a pretty neutral tone works for me. I started a thread a few months ago that pretty much said i was bored with the MB tone and needed to liven things up a bit. I ended up realising that yes, its sterile but that give a nice clean canvas for some outboard gear. Now i use a Darkglass VMTD and i dont even notice the amps signature tone now.

Ive been using Markbass amps for years, and have to agree with you John. Thats not to say i dont like them, quite the opposite, but i find they need something in front of them to bring them to life, especially with a passive bass. I do think the older heads like the SA and LMII series had more life than my F1, but i look on it more as a power amp that can be tweaked a bit rather than a tone shaping amp.

I think you are mistaking your Squire of a Squier ;-). Not so sure about the tone of the Squiers, good enough certainly, but the pups are the one thing i always upgrade. Not just because they are Squiers, but more because other pups give me the tone i want.
-
well all i can add is that you either have a fake or you haven't looked at the headstock properly ;-)............its Squier :-) I do agree though, Squier are putting out some very nice basses these days. Although ive just sold my VM PJ as it just wasn't needed, my two Classic Vibes will be with me for life (or at least while i need a 4 string Fender). Ive had issues with MIA's in the past but both my CV's turned up perfect. For me the necks on these basses are very, very good. To my fingers even better than the Fenders that have the med-jumbo frets.

Glad you got it sorted but doesn't this leave you with two amps now?

Squier VM PJ with EMG Geezer Butler pups **SOLD**
dave_bass5 replied to dave_bass5's topic in Basses For Sale
Thanks very much. Yes, the modern Squiers are very high quality. My two CV's are going nowhere, and thier necks are the best I've ever played. My GAS was truly quenched when I got these, at least for 4 string basses. The PJ was an experiment that seemed like a good idea at the time, but I ended up using just the neck pup most of the time, so figured I might as well just use a P bass. -
I got this bass last Nov and used it quite a bit for a while, but ive just switched to 5 string and needs this to go so im not tempted back. I got the EMG's earlier this year and put them in myself. I also got a new pickguard for this, and new knobs. These knobs are a gun metal colour rather than the standard silver. The bass is in very good condition, a few very light surface scratches if you look for them. The main issue is 4 noticeable (in the right light) scratches in the finish on the back. No idea how they got there, and they are hard to see unless you look for them. Ive tried to show them clearly in the photo, and have enhanced it slightly so they stand out. No issues with the neck as far as i know. In fact its hardly been used as i prefer the neck from my Squier CV Jazz so thats been on the bass most of the time ive had it. This neck hasnt been gigged at all. I dont want to post this so its a meet up in central London only im afraid. Although the bass doesn't come with a case ill include a gig bag. Nothing fancy, just something to help transport it in. Looking for £260 OVNO. Any questions just ask. Not looking for any trades, as im sorted for gear at the moment
No but then that contradicts the idea people are buying this stuff with the hope of it being the answer to their prayers of being able to play doesn't it?
Yes, but these people will normally already have other basses so should know better ;-)
I'm not disparaging people who buy high end gear, regardless of whether they can play or not. Their money, their choice, no problem. I'm just suggesting there is no correlation between gear and talent and that a great player will sound great pretty much regardless of what gear they happen to use.
Yep, spot on again, although i still think sometimes you need to up the budget to get something that you do feel more comfortable on, and so can play better.
-
I'm sure that's true, but I doubt they are good players because they've got high-end gear.
Agree with your posts. I keep reading how someone "has" to spend a lot of money for a "playable" bass. This sounds like BS to me. I can understand someone wanting to do it for the pleasure of owning something unique and expensive, nothing really wrong with that, but some make out they are forced to because nothing else (i.e., what us mainstream players use) will get the job done. I know sometimes you have to spend more to get the configuration you want, its not always easy buying off the shelf with the exact spec you prefer, but i cant believe someone with a 3k bass (for example) wouldn't be able to play a much, much cheaper bass and still get the job done.

Five String Jazz Basses talk to me?! NOW A NBD THREAD !!!!!

I used one for a while (still have it) but moved on to a BBDI. These days I use a Darkglass VMTD and it does the warming thing so much better than the previous pedals. Not cheap but IME close to a warm tube amp than the BDDI type of thing. Saying that I do like what the BDDI does to my tone, but in a different way. -
Ha it was Uber pimped Bartolini pickups, EBS active preamp with the jack socket mounted on the body, Badass bridge, full size tuners, rolled fingerboard edges, Fender pickguard. triggers broom you might say
Ah right, in that case I see the problem. I'll shut up. I still say go outboard rather than onboard though. For me this allows for the natural tone of the bass to be blended in, rather than having a full active tone, and you can use it with all basses. -

Isn't Pete comparing the new bass to a Squier though. Unless that had a pre amp in it then it's nothing to do with outboard gear IMO. Both basses should be sound pretty similar unless the pups or wiring is faulty. Not sure what Squier Pete had before, maybe it was a VM with the hot Duncan designed pups in it. -
I thought there might be a thread about this. It's funny but as soon as that first song started I thought it had a Ice Hosue feel to it, and then I saw who was on bass. Coincidence I know but nevertheless. Lovey tone and playing. I really like guys playing. Seeing all those jazz basses was also nice.
As it happens the J-Retro 01 deluxe is popping about a bit on one of my basses and I haven't put enough time into narrowing down what the issue is.... but I am loving my bass passive which just makes me less concerned about fixing it. I'd happily gig it passive, but then it isn't a Fender but it is a Jazz and a 5 string.
The funny thing is I use the pedal just to give me more of an active tone, but I'm not really keen on active basses. When I had the BDDI I kept the blend very low, just enough to fatten the tone a bit. Same goes for the Darkglass, although I do like the warming it does as well so I keep that a bit higher. I don't think I'd worry too much if I forgot my pedal for a gig, I don't rely on it, but having the choice I always use it. -

I must admit I can't play a passive fender without my Darkglass/BDDI/BDI21.
