Yeah. Really looking forward to it. I also like the fact that the images on that website are the bass I'll get. I've seen one or two shots of these basses with quite a heavy and ugly looking finish. This one looks perfect. Of course this will probably be in the classifieds by the end of the year lol.

Thanks, that the one I'm ordering today (see my post above yours ;-).

Thanks for all the comments, and to those that sent me the link to Cotswolds. I have been in touch with them and will be ordering the secondhand one they have. For less than £700 it's got be worth a shot. To me it seems more like a Highway-One, without the BA2 bridge and of course a different finish. I appreciate its not got the niceties that a MIA standard has, but I have fallen in love with the looks.
Speaking as a long term Jazz player, I recently bought an American Standard Precision, and I really like the Modern C neck on that. So I imagine the Slim C would be easy to get on with.
Well if its slimmer than a MIA standard then yes, i may well find it ok. Then again my Squier neck is slimmer and im still not 100% with it.
They do do sandblasted Jazz's as well if you prefer those. http://www.fender.co...blasted&start=1
Cheers. no, not after a jazz, although i personally think Jazz basses look much nicer than P basses.

Cheers. I get the felling that maybe i would be ok with it. I fit had vintage frets id feel happier, but im sure thats not really an issue. For what its worth i have a Squier CVP bass and although i much prefer the neck on this over something like a AM standard, as far as feel goes, this is really my main reference point.

Cheers guys. All the reviews ive seen are positive (unusual for a Fender :-). Id happily buy one if it has a jazz neck, but maybe the fact that it has a slim C shaped neck wont be a problem. Ill pop along to Wunjos this week and see if they still have one. Thanks for the heads up Grangur.

I know there is quite an old thread on here about these basses but I don't see much about these. I'm very tempted to get one, as I think the blue one is one of the nicest non mainstream looking basses I've seen, and more importantly can just about afford in a long time. It's a todos up between this and a D. Lakin P with jazz neck, as I do really prefer jazz sized necks. I'm really after more info on how the necks freel, and how the tone compares to a standard MIA P bass. Cheers.
It's called "doing it purely for the fun of it, not for a living". When it's just a hobby, freebie/matesrates gigs aren't such an issue. And just to head the inevitable off at the pass: no, I'm NOT suggesting that doing it for a living can't be fun too.
Agreed. Why should having fun always be about the money. Don't people have hobbies that don't make them any money? Of course they do. For example, should we expect people who like a kick about over the park at the weekends only do it if they get paid?

PA speaker stands. Good, fairly cheap and lightweight?
dave_bass5 replied to dave_bass5's topic in Accessories and Misc
Right, I've narrowed it down to a set of Proel's. These http://www.visiosound.co.uk/stands-cases-c11/speaker-stands-c60/proel-adjustable-steel-tripod-pa-speaker-stands-2pack-p1452 Or these http://www.visiosound.co.uk/stands-cases-c11/speaker-stands-c60/proel-adjustable-aluminium-tripod-pa-speaker-stands-2pack-p199 Now, height aside I can't see a really difference between the two, other than the Aluminium ones are over half as light. I can't figure out why the sturdier stands are rated to hold half what the lightweight stands hold. Our current stands are 4KG so the first are heavier and the second much lighter. Thoughts? -

Actually two batteries boxes ;-) -
Oh yes, i agree that each has its own merits and uses. I suppose my point was you cant just stay around the 5th fret for everything, even though thats one of the advantages of having the 5th string (or long thumb rest
Whatever works for you. I was just simply pointing out that the sound is not the same, depending on where you play it on the instrument- One should play a line higher up the neck on lower strings for the reason of sound, not because they haven't got it together down in first position. But hey, this is only my opinion.
Although im much more used to playing 4 strings, i can play a 5 string almost as well. I do get the idea of playing around at the 5th fret, less hand movement etc, but to my ears it just doesn't sound the same as playing on the E sting as if it were a 4 string bass most of the time. Maybe its the basses ive played, but i cant get that growl and energy im used to by playing the B string around the 5th fret.

Thanks. I'll look in to those. While I agree with the buy cheap buy twice comment for some things, I've had both Proel and Qucik-lok over the past 13 years. Not cheap stands really, yet the Studio Spares stands have lasted just as long. I believe it's down to how you look after them, not how much you pay,, and I do ab it they haven't been well looked after. None the less, the stands themselves still work fine,, it's just a bit of a pain setting them up as the parts that are supposed to lock don't anymore. We just use Allen keys through the holes in the top poles. Let's face it, we are talking about metal tubes with plastic bits on them. Hardly high tech stuff. If I was in a pro touring band I'd spend more (or get the band to spend more), but I'm only doing the occasional gig these days, and I can't see why a £50 set of stands wouldn't be more than good enough. -

Yeah, the low end is very powerful. Ive got the active tone level set just lower than the passive level. This keeps the overall output level pretty consistent when switching between the two modes, as long as im not being silly with the EQ boost. -

Cheers. i had some of those air damped Proel stands years ago. Very nice stands. I do feel the extra cost for air dampening isnt something i want to pay for, as we get by without it already. Im thinking about these from Thomanns, or maybe the Quick-Lok SP171 set. http://www.thomann.de/gb/millenium_bs2222_pro_set.htm -

We used to have a pair off Quicklok stands, and yes, they were great. In fact I couldn't faultt them at the time, but they did fall apart after a few years. This was more than likely down to bad treatment from the guy who used to take them though. I think they are just a bit out of my price range though. I'm having to buy these off my own back (the band think the existing ones are good for another few years) so £50-ish is really the top end of my budget. EDIT: Meant to say I'm talking about the SP180's as being the ones we had and the ones that are just out of my budget. -
Is the above possible? Looking to replace some old Studio spares stands that have all but fallen apart. Not looking to spend much, hopefully under £50 the pair. They only need ot support some Peavy Hi Sys 1x 15 passive speakers. Ive looked on Amazon and Thomanns, seen loads, but wanted to get some personal recommendations if possible. Cheers.

I've had two Lakland Duck Dunn basses. The first had a Fralin and the seocond had a Hanson pup. Although they were a couple of years apart to my ears the Hanson sounded a bit harsh and growly compared to how I remembered the first bass. I swapped the Hanson out and put a Fralin in and felt much better about it. Saying that I put the same Fralin in a Squier P bass and never really felt it made much difference.

I tend to post more if im looking to buy something, or have just brought something. This si a great place to do research and discuss items etc. I feel a lot fo the threads are irrelevant to me these days. The biggest reason for not coming on here as much though is any thread i have subscribed to i can read in the email notifications, so i dont need to come here to see whats going on. I thought we were only supposed to get one email alert per thread until we came here and read it, but its never worked like that for me.

Cool. The 55-02 is going to be a lot more versatile. I started out on a 55-01 and loved it, at the time. I suppose if there was anything I didn't like it was the tone. At first I did, but after a while I felt it to be a bit bland. I did upgrade the pre amp but that didn't really make much difference. Had it for a couple of years though and giged it constantly so it must have had something going for it. I think the 55-02 is going to be sweet. I think one day I'll have one. Agree about the staked knobs. not very elegant and I did worry about knocking them when I first got my Sire. I don't worry about them now though, but I do think they look a bit cheap. Good luck with it.

Oooh nice. JO5?
That doesn't look nearly sturdy enough, looks like it will fall if knocked. I'm interested in the foam holder, I emailed them and got an auto-response but still haven't heard back
Sturdy enough for almost 2 years of regular use on wooden stages ;-) Its never slipped or caused my bass to get damaged, although it does tend to bounce off the cab if not secured when there is no bass in it.

Although i do have a proper stand, these days im more likely to use one of these

I doubt you will be disappointed, but at least Thomanns have a fantastic returns policy if you don't want to keep it. Also there is the new M7 5 string due out soon. That's not a Jazz but it seems to have the same pre amp set up.
