1.
That looks correct, though I've also seen them with the CIJ text above the serial number...
Mine is exactly like that. Starts with a P also and I think mine is also a 94.
2. Mine is a similar vintage cij - will look tonight
3.
Last week a friend gave me her bass but I accidently dropped it and damaged it beyond repair so what I wanted is find what sort of bass it is and where I can buy an exact replacement she has gone to America so is as yet she doesn't know it's damaged Here's an image before it was damaged If it helps it has DeArmond and Pilot write on it. I really don't wish to tell her I've broken it so if I can find a replacement it would be much appreciated
If it were me, I'd want you to fess up , and would probably accept your repair option. If I found out that what you suggest doing had happened I' be very annoyed at the deception.
4.
Yeah B15, I've no doubt you're right, but it contributed greatly to his tone is what I'm getting at although on a lot of stuff I think he went direct into the desk. He famously had an action so high that his Funk Machine is generally thought to be more or less unplayable by anyone else. Part of the answer may be that he was originally a double bass player and developed incredible hand strength. He must have had some sort of double pick technique considering what he played. Apart from that vid of him backing Marvin Gaye, which has been posted on here a couple of times, there doesn't seem to be a lot of footage of him playing in existence. A sign of the times I guess.
In The Bass Handbook (Adrian Ashton) it does say that he used a PortaFlex at at least one point in time. Maybe he used a B15 also.
5.
Me too. I don't have a problem with what JG says, it nice to hear some proper opinion based on so much knowledge and experience, whether you agree or not. Better that than some of the wishy washy crap some musicians spout. John Myung being a prime example, for instance.
I don't mean that precisely. All I mean is, and its very selfinterested really is that I don't mind how arrogant or not his opinions or manner are, if I can learn something I will listen on this topic - he knows way more than I do and spreads his knowledge for free. If I was paying for his tuition, I would take a different view.. Its not like I have to spend xmas with him. I should stress that I didn't see the flame war that went on here so make no comment on what was said and by whom.
6.
Can we stop having a pop at BGM contributors please. Thank You
Janek says he contributes to BGM for free. It takes time to put together an article like he and the others do. I'm more than happy to read what he has to say on-topic, whatever his personailty off the page.
7. then my passive jazz is way loud. Yes, I have changed the battery before anyone asks.
8. I dont need much - I have a CIJ jazz and a Ray copy. I just play at home and so dont need a big rig. I'm still learning so time is the only thing I need.
9. I have the EST96 (active Ray copy) - its really quite good and the only thing I'd change is the pickup, which is a bit weak. Not sure what model to change it to though. My Jazz is actually louder.
10. "This file is no longer available." I have emailed BGM TWICE and asked for the downloadable files there to be updated. No reply or acknowledgement, whcih is disappointing. It all stopped about issue 31 - which is at least a year ago. Perhaps any of you in contact with Nick Wells could nudge him?
11. Thanks - I was thinking of the g chords and the d . I will try it again in Db
12. I just found the notation for this track on www.davemarks.com. Its notated in Db - I can't post a link as I'm writing this on a blackberry. Is it likely to really be in D but played detuned by a semitone to get more open strings? Doesn't seem the easiest key when using standard tuning.
13. I just subscribed, but am still waiting for my strings.
14.
Thanks everyone. I might try some 40 - 100 on my Jazz as I could do with a bit more brightness.
At the Notts Bass Bash, someone commented that my Jazz sounded like a Rick - I thhink that this was mostly due to the strings.
15. I switched to .40s as my Jazz came with them. Pros- they seem to stay in tune better and should brighter, they also seem to slap better. Cons- they dont seem as beefy (duh) but you can add some effetc or extra mid to solve this. Genreally speaking, I'd say it was a thumbs up for my JAzz, but I'm going back to 45s on my Stingray
16. I concur with the measurements from bassdoc but add that the bridge pickup (to back edge) is 32.5 cm on my 62 reissue cij
17. Last time it was at a pub in nottingham. Worth going to, budgetbassist organised it as I recall. We should do it again really.
18. Will confirm from my 62 ri jap jazz tonight
19. 62 reissue jazz gets my vote
20. Maybe I'm being dumb, but why is that a typo? There's only one of her.
21. I just subscribed - at least its a UK focused mag. Fewer typos this month, I thought
22. Serious action needed on the typos - but I'm liking the rest. Seriously thinking about subscribing
23. Featured in last months BGM magazine - he plays a rick too I believe . I also liked 'somebody told me' and their version of 'romeo and juliet' off 'sawdust'
24. Its on the sawdust album currently being sold very cheap at hmv - also recommend 'joy ride' on the 'day and age' album
25.
People don't shout about them because they haven't got the supposed kudos of a big US manufacturers name. I've no direct experience of their bass pickups but I've used various Armstrong guitar pickups and they've all been excellent, just as good as your Duncans, Dimarzios, Fralins etc.
+1
