I know that isn't your thing at all Alex, but do you have any insight on that?
If you want slanted pickups for a fanned bass, then Im not sure if the BL series Q-Tuners would work, the pole pieces wouldnt be under the string any more. I would guess the BS would be fine though, just like any other single coil.
And Mikey - let me know for sure
Just follow Mertons thread http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=21386
 2.
Fanned frets. As has been mentioned, I would love to give something with fanned frets a go. Ideally a 6/7+, but even a 4 would give me a good idea to start things from. If ANYBODY can help with this (I'm in Sheffield, which pretty much counts d-basser out ), I would be in indebted to them.
I work in Sheffield, Im puting together a fanned 5 prototype for Merton so if you dont mind waiting a few weeks till its strung up, you could try it out I cant guarantee the quality at this point, it wont be a Shuker for sure! Otherwise, I rekon there will be a fair few fans at Bassday in Manchester
 3.
I do like the look of the neck join
Its gonna get more carving done to it, just you wait! EDIT: Oh, and if youre wondering why its all stripey, its cut from timber I had in the cupboard, total cost about £20.
 4.
Loooooooooooooong scale.
Yep, its a bit of a stretch down the far end! I seem to remember Dingwalls having a 37" scale, sounds scary... But I think the real stretch will be the width of the neck, as I remember its close on 51mm! (oops...) Im kinda surprised how nice it feels round about the 7th, the angle of the fret lines feels very natural. Speaking of which, does anyone else get the urge to play guitar hero as soon as the neck is bolted on? Anyhoo, we'll know for sure when the frets are in and the strings go on (some time in 2012) EDIT: heres a shot from the back - before any body carving
 5.
I'm thinking about using some behlen aerosol lacquer.
Youre in trouble - it says on the website "Pre-Cat Lacquer Satin - 369g" - you wont be able to use it on the mog Just out of interest, did you consider a water based brush on laquer, like http://www.axminster.co.uk/product-Chestnu...cquer-19769.htm Ive also been eyeing up this http://www.axminster.co.uk/product-Polyvin...nish-715653.htm - will have to give it a try on some scrap
 6.
Okay, off the top of my head: - ACG Finn Singlecut (bet you've not heard of a singlecut finn before!) Body same widths as before giving the same look, but made of Stripy Ebony/Sycamore/Wenge/Sycamore/Stripy Ebony 34" scale 4 string Flamed sycamore board with ebony binding Neck made from sycamore/wenge/sycamore/ebony/sycamore/wenge/sycamore
Is the sycamore board going to be acrylicised, like some of Alans spalted maple boards?
 7.
What's that you ask? Before 2011? Hopefully!
Just in time for Merts single cut then
 8. whats the model number of the three sanders? Which is the quietest?
 9.
Hi Mikey Yup those are the ones, however I have since discovered that the large segmented thread on these is designed for soft wood. There is a version with a smaller thread on the outside for use in hardwood. I would go for the hard wood version as they requirer a smaller hole to insert into and should be more accurate as they go in. The larger threaded soft wood insert thread had a tendency to move off center when cutting in. Something like this would be better not only does it have a smaller thread to cut into the wood but it also has no flange on the top to stick out proud of the neck. http://www.mcfeelys.com/product/3606-STS/1...hreaded-Inserts
Thanks! I wonder if they could be got direct from Germany, rather than from the US - would be cheaper!
As for bolts I used some stainless countersunk ones that i had around from a different job....nothing special I can send you a set if you need em.
Cheers for the kind offer - Ive got three single cuts planned, 24 bolts in total so I'll have a hunt around here and see what I can find. If theyre just standard machine bolts then I shouldnt have any problem finding them, and will probably be cheaper in bulk anyway. Otherewise I may be in touch
 10.
Threaded inserts to take the neck bolts, probably overkill but it was some thing I wanted to try
Hi Peaty, Looks like I arrived late to this thread... I love that spalted top! Threaded inserts are the way to go! Coupla questions: Are those the Trend inserts from Axminster? And what screws did you use? Cheers!
 11.
Mikey should be perfectly within his rights to work and make noise as he sees fit, as long as it's not late in the evening, there is nothing anyone, poice and lawyers included, could do to stop him. He should meet with the neighbours to say that he is going to contiue to work and then apologise for any inconvience.
thanks for the encouragement. i was totally gutted monday evening when i got the complaint, but i cant just leave it now as Merton and i have way too much invested in these basses! Im going to give them a weekend off, then start again on the handtools. powertools will have to wait
The bass looks like it's gonna be great, I like that ACG Skelf-like singlecut.
wow - i love ACG basses, thats a real complement! ive heard nothing but great things of them, i'd love to give one a try sometime. it was really tricky getting the design right with that wonky bridge. i started with a double cut, and couldnt get it to look right. then i just tried filling in the top horn and it suddenly just worked!
 12. Snakey Lane, looking forward to seeing this one take shape! we're all in for a treat here
I continue to be blown away by my RIM Custom 5 and am almost certain it'll still be my main bass come the middle of the century!
hi Alex, im new to this forum but watched this bass being built over on talkbass.com, i must say Robbies basses look really awesome!
 13. (and the prize for the most original thread title goes to...) i hope these basses dont dissapoint, theyre not all that inovative, all pretty standard features. ive just never seen them put together in this combination. shape wise, its a collection of ideas we've been chatting about for the past 9 years or so and finally getting round to building it. funny that someone should mention status, a coleague of mine said it looks a little like a single cut status. anyhoo, Mertons thread so i'll let him fill you in.
