1.
Agreed. Mark and Bass Direct are everything the Bass Cellar should be.
I've only ever spoken to Mark on the phone but have found him really helpful and nice bloke. I'd go to Bass Direct every time.
 2. The Beatles are the only innovators. Forget the rest. They are Gods. See 'The Beatles' thread for confirmation
 3.
Would it? If the next bid was cancelled & it reverts back to mine as highest they still bump it higher? Didn't know.
Sorry, wasn't doubting you but i've had something similar happen but the way some 'bump' the price is by putting a couple of bids.
 4.
Well, it may be a let down for you, but it's not a reaction, it's a revelation of the inconsistency and the incoherence of your claims.
You didn't let me down That's the point. Try reading my post again and it may become it bit less incoherent.
 5.
What is the surreal part?
We agree on something. Surreal?
 6.
In the days when I used to buy on Ebay I once saw a guitar that I liked. I put my max bid on (in that case £350), as I usually did - if it won it won, it didn't necesasarily go that high. With seconds to go I was sniped with a bid of £1000, so I thought "ho-hum". But the seller emailed me to say he didn't trust the new bidder, 0 feedback etc, cancelled his bid & sold it to me - with no hassles!! I kept it for years.
That means someone else must have bid somewhere around £990 before the £1000 bid otherwise the next bid (yours) would have been £360 if yours was £350.
 7.
Sorry, but I can never forgive them for introducing the kids to tea. A whole generation lost to the filth.
Yeah but what kind of 'tea' was it................... P.S. Please remember this comes under the 'I Am Right And You Are Wrong' BassChat debate. See 'The Beatles' thread for reference.
 8.
The Beatles are constantly criticised, you're doing it yourself.
Exactly the reaction i expected. Well done for not letting me down.
 9.
considering that this is a bass players site, I find this discussion almost surreal. In the book 'bass masters - paul mccartney' by tony bacon and gareth morgan (a bit of a 'must read' the authors talk a lot about their influence. Particularly that they tended to listen to US bass players and music and imported those influences into the UK, often adding their own twist. Good examples would be Joe Mauldin (Buddy Holly) and Elvis's bass player Bill Black. Paul McCartney also listened a lot to James Jamerson - who Mccartney said was his hero. He would have the motown records sent over to listen to before they were released... The first time motown riffs were heard, were through the beatles music in the UK. To name just a few...
All British groups were influenced by US bass and guitar players. I would doubt if any of them had heard of James Jamerson at the time but were still influenced by him. I read some years ago about a British guitarist who said he was influenced by James Burton only he didn't know it was James Burton until some years later.
 10.
Oh well, its lucky I bought Stig O Hara's debut album then!
You're excellent taste in music will never be questioned. i salute you sir!!!!!
 11.
Seeing the reverence that some people here still seem to hold the Beatles after all this time, you can see what Lennon was getting at when he made the famous statement about the Beatles being bigger than Jesus!
Absolutely. As someone who saw Beatlemania (and saw the Fab Four in the flesh) unfold upon the world i do admit that although i bought all the LPs i was never a real fan and at the time they were never thought of as they are now. They have become a group that you can't seem to criticise. You could have done this in the 60s and wouldn't have got into much of an argument about it. It would just have been your opinion. You'll soon be shouted down if you have the cheek to criticise nowadays. That's what i find amazing and how and what they have become.
 12.
For producer Rick Rubin, surveying The Beatles’ recorded achievements is akin to witnessing a miracle. “If we look at it by today’s standards, whoever the most popular bands in the world are, they will typically put out an album every four years,” Rubin said in a 2009 radio series interview. “So, let’s say two albums as an eight year cycle. And think of the growth or change between those two albums. The idea that The Beatles made thirteen albums in seven years and went through that arc of change... it can’t be done. Truthfully, I think of it as proof of God, because it’s beyond man’s ability.” Love that quote.
The Beatles output was incredible no doubt about that but it was a different time when you had to sell records to make any money. No money in touring then like there is now.
 13. I knew that there would be nothing...........................but praise for the Pre-Fab Four. I'm so glad that they decide to[sub] [/sub][s]share[/s] no, to give the gift of their music to us for without them there would be no music. No birds singing and pianos just sitting there unplayed with their keyboards just looking like black and white striped shelves. Although i'm sure that there is some sort of debate we could have about records sold and their far reaching musically influences the fact is that The Rutles were great because i said so and musically superior because i said so. How could such a group be over rated? P.S. Please see 'The Beatles' thread for the 'because i said so' bit
 14.
they revolutionised trousers. you could see, well....everything
You are correct. The Rutles were fashion icons. No Rutles. No Trousers.
 15. As it's 38 years (probably next Tuesday) since the Pre-Fab Four first appeared on TV what do fellow BCers think of the way they changed music and are they over rated. Personally i think that the song 'Joe Public' brought to the attention of a wide public sampling and was also a seminal piece in forming electronic music into how we know it today. For me, without The Rutles we would all be wandering the streets crying 'Where is the music?'
 16. Here's some of my experiences on the bay............ I won an auction for a motorcycle and the seller emailed me to say the they thought the bike was worth more than what i'd won it for so would think about over the weekend and decide whether to let me have it!!! I sold something only for the winner to tell me "i bought one of these at the weekend so don't want yours now. Thanks". This has happened more than once. "My boyfriend bought the bike but doesn't want it now. Can we cancel this?' "I never thought this was going to go for as much as this. I didn't want to pay that much" from winning bidder. My reply was "why did you bid that much then?" There are loads more like this. Fortunately most things go smoothly.
 17. Very interesting what you've done to your Pilot. If it works for you and does the job then that's excellent and worth the trouble. I have a 1984 Guild Pilot and although i have more expensive basses it is probably the nicest to play. They are still amazing value for money.
 18. It's worth a search on the net for Shaftesbury Ned Callan Peter Cook Nobbly Ned Shergold for more info on these
 19.
Ah, oops. It was a late finish gig and I'm going to blame tiredness
No worries. I was just listing Fretless players i could remember from the days before Jaco really made the instrument a different animal.
 20.
Other players not already mentioned (that I can see that is) Pino Palladino John Giblin Mick Khan
The list was of Fretless players in groups before the Jaco phenomenon.
 21.
Can you name them please, I'd really like to check them out. Thanks, Steve.
John Paul Jones Paul Simonon Geddy Lee Boz Burrell Rick Grech (Family) Mo Foster Stanley Shelton (Peter Frampton) Patrick O'Hearn (Frank Zappa) Bill Wyman Jack Bruce Larry Klein Rick Laird That's a few off the top of my head but there are many more that played fretless in rock.
 22.
No, quite right it's not a competition. But your comments on the Beatles having no influence on electronic music are false, TNK is sampling, and as I'm sure you are aware sampling has everything do do with electronic music. It's been cited continuously as a seminal track in this respect, a precursor. Never mind... there have been some stupid theads round here recently.
What i was getting at is that yes TNK is sampling but there are many (better) examples of sampling long before TNK. Listen to Spike Jones in the 50s. Here was a middle of the road entertainer that used samples. Not so cutting edge as we thought in the 60s then. TNK is just one small piece of the jigsaw. Maybe it's more important to you for some reason but it's a small part. Have a listen to any Raymond Scott recordings or Fontana Mix by John Cage, anything by Luciano Berio and you'll maybe have a better understanding of the music you obviously have a passion for. I've always kept my ears open to new music whether that's by actually listening or by listening to those with a greater understanding than me. As i said before, just enjoy the music.
 23.
What?? Sampling has no effect on electronic music? Oh dear mate. Google what DJ Spooky said about TNK. Go and listen to the Chemical Brothers. Read an interview with the Boards of Canada and read about their influences after Music Has the Right To Children, widely believed to be one of the best electronic albums of all time. Rarely do I say this on this forum but you're just wrong.
I'm not sure who you think said that sampling has no effect on electronic music so not sure what you are on about there. Yes i'm familiar with Boards Of Canada. Twoism was much sought after until it was commercially released and still is a classic in my opinion. I was buying Thomas Leer and Robert Rental (go and google them) recordings in the 70s when they were issuing them privately so have an interest in electronic music but wouldn't tell anyone that i'm an expert. Although i do admit i know a lot more than some. It isn't a competition on who's right and who's wrong. Just enjoy the music.
