since I am a moderator on www.letstalkguild.com my suggestion is US$ 800-900 for a good js even with acorns is more realistic, but of course you have to be patient.
I've found that what is dollars in the U.S. we pay in Pounds in the U.K. so the £900 on ebay sounds about right. Also after paying $800-900 for one in the U.S. and importing it to the U.K. it's going to cost about £900 after shipping, insurance and tax. I agree about being patient though as i bought a 1983 Pilot Bass in a London guitar shop not long ago for what i still reckon was an excellent price.
anyway the one on ebay is too expensive. there also was a longscale version of the js available, but if also with the acorns I don't know. it was the equivalent to the gibson eb (right?) series, also available as guitars (equivalent to gibson sg) but the guild humbuckers are superior to the muddy gibson pickups, infact justin meldal johnson prefers them to the later dark stars made by frank hammon - he plays a starfire bass reissue from the 90ies woth these humbuckers. unfortunately the longscale version usually had a neck dive, if I remember right.
From what i've seen on the internet i don't think it's far off what these go for. I often look on a Guild forum (i have a Guild Pilot) and these JS-2 basses have been advertised in the U.S. for $1500. Whether they get that much of course i don't know. There are two Jetstar JS-2 basses advertised by UK dealers at the moment for £1100 and £1500 so the one on ebay doesn't seem overpriced.

I saw this 1970s Guild Jetstar JS-2 Bass recently with Oak & Leaf Inlays. Anyone else seen these or know anything about them? It seems they are short scale but there doesn't seem to be many about.

What i find the strangest thing about this whole thread is that how serious this Beatles thing is. As someone who witnessed Beatlemania the one thing i do remember about it was that is was FUN. No time then for po-faced crusaders telling you what to listen to. Just four blokes from Liverpool singing their songs and when interviewed were usually amusing and cracking jokes (usually at the interviewers expense). When i used to go over to Twickenham Studios after school to get a glimpse of them (along with hundreds more school kids) during the filming of A Hard Days Night & Help we went because it was just a fun thing to do and a great time to be young. Nowadays if the same thing occurred you'd probably have a load of middle-aged studious types there with laptops rather than screaming kids.
Bloody hell, 27 pages..? Good job no-one mentioned The Rolling Stones.
\ Who? No, not The Who. Who?
Went for £130. That's a bargain, and shows you why Collect Only isn't always a great idea.
You're right it's never a great idea. I can never understand why anyone who is selling a bass that came halfway around the world at one point in it's life won't send it a few more miles. Mind boggling.
+2 What a pointless exercise. Back in early 80's Birkenhead when I was a teenage fledgling bass player, no one I knew listened to the Beatles. They were seen as old hat and there seemed to be a real desire amongst local bands to escape the legacy of the whole Merseybeat thing. They have had undoubtedly had a huge influence, possibly more so in recent years than back then, but yeah totally agree, the whole musical nostalgia thing is hugely depressing. Move on now please.
I lived through the birth of The Beatles and saw Beatlemania first hand and agree with a lot of that. Their popularity certainly dipped in the 80s and although you'd still hear their songs on the radio there didn't have amount of popularity they do today. They were as you say old hat. It wasn't until the 90s that things really took off again. I'm sure that if we'd have had these discussions about the Beatles in the 80s it would have fizzled out pretty quickly due to lack of interest.
Little did he know that, 50 years on, it would be everyone else still analysing their music.
Yes. Exactly my point.
Victor Wooten has done a cover of this one.
Go West, Peabo Bryson, Montell Jordan & Phyllis Hyman also covered it and it has been sampled on at least 40 recordings.
Yeah thats nice a gem, nice track.
I'm not much of a player (more of a bass guitar fan) and wondered what you think of the bass playing on it.
-
Thanks to both of you for the info. I remember when the OLP Tony Levin came out but didn't think any more about them. Saw one recently and realise that there were a bit of a bargain and wish i'd have bought one at the time!

Just out of interest this bit of U.S. blue eyed soul is from 1977/78 so roughly the same time as the Bobby Caldwell song. I happen to like it but what do you reckon to the bass playing? http://youtu.be/6ruH8ijyZTI
Seriously amazing tune so so smooth. Love the brass as well.
Yes it's a really good tune. Although there are other musicians listed on the LP Caldwell plays Synthesizer, Keyboards, Guitar, Drums, Bass & Vibes!! I'm just reading the sleeve notes of the What You Won't Do For Love & Cat In The Hat LPs (which both used near enough all the same musicians) and they were recorded in 1978 & 1980. I bought these when they were released and can't believe it was that long ago!!!!
Really thats pretty damm good.
I've just checked the CD and it doesn't list who played on what tracks but on that LP the bass was played by either Bobby Caldwell, George 'Chocolate' Perry, Richie Valesquez & John Paulus*. *John Paulus is listed on the CD insert but NOT on the original vinyl LP.
-
Anyone know played bass on this beautiful track,he must have been sampled as much as james brown.
I thought that Bobby Caldwell played most of the instruments on that LP but i could be wrong. I have the LP somewhere so will dig it out and have a look.

Just been sifting through my vinyl LPs and i think that actually 'Children Of Forever' is Stanley Clarke's debut LP then a year later came the self titled 'Stanley Clarke' LP. I like all of the Return To Forever LPs and his solo stuff up to about 1980 but that's purely a personal opinion. He is also on Norman Connor's 'Dance Of Magic' LP from 1973 which is worth searching out.
