1. If you want a 5 string fretless jazz and you've considered de-fretting a CIJ, why not defret one of those Squier Deluxe Jazz Basses? The fretboard with no marker dots is begging to be defretted; and I'm sure you could 'pimp' it up at a later date, should you feel the need. You can get 'em on ebay for £235 delivered. I'm very tempted myself!
  2.
I'm thinking of getting one of these Squiers as i really want a P/J What are your impressions?
I think they're alright; and they can be found in a lot of guitar shops, so you can try a few out and bag up the one that feels best. There's a few colours as well. I quite like the 'antique burst' colour; but each to their own. Put a fender headstock decal on it and you can impress your bandmates no end! Other P/Js to consider:

Yamaha (there's a lot of yammy fans on here)
Washburn (good prices on ebay)
erm... I can't think of any more, but there's bound to be loads
I'm sure other forum members can suggest loads more, and probably try and flog you their old P/J at the same time! What kind of financial damage are you looking at? If you don't mind me asking..
  3. This 'what colour is each of their whites?' question is really starting to get on my nerves; presumably because I know as little as everyone else. 'Vintage white' in the pic above looks very 'custardy', whereas the 'VWH' on ishibashi looks less yellow and more white... In fact, of the 3 colours shown above (vintage, olympic & arctic whites) only vintage white is shown on the ishibashi website (along with olympic white blonde) for the '75 Jazz. Aaaagghhh We really need some accurate pictures from owners. Can anyone out there help?
  4.
I had also hoped that i might have been bought one as a small but generous present - but that doesn't seem to have happened!!
Unlucky.
  5.
Just got my Jb75us/fc in vwh last week. It's really good, kicks MIM's but.
Is the VWH 'whiter' than the OWH then? I'm still curious as to which I'm gonna choose. Also (to anyone out there), is there still talk of a bulk shipment from ishibashi going on?
  6.
are these exactly the same basses? as i have a p/j in red but would really like the black model wich the chrome pickguard. loving my squier p/j but its red mettalic, and i did it more because i got it about half the price. so i'm thinking of selling this one and buying the chrome and black version. any downsides? upsides? Thanks. Bass_Junkie.
Go for the black one, you'll feel cooler if nothing else. I always thought it looked a little Phil Lynott-style, and imho he was uber cool! You can upgrade to something "better" when you're bored of the black beauty. You could even see if anyone wanted to swap their black bass for your red one?
Might as well not bother and start saving for a better instrument further down the line.
It never surprises me how many basschatters think that everyone has a bottomless pit of cash to dive into every time they fancy a change of instrument. I'm sure if bass junkie had the dough for a pre-CBS precision, he'd have one of them to go in his arsenal. I imagine bass_junkie took other basses into consideration, but he still owes his old man for his current axe. Getting another squier will help limit the financial burden.
  7.
Go on - buy one and tell us all what it's like!!
Well said. We all wanna know if Ace Pro is the way forwards in budget instruments.
  8.
Is there peace to be found in saying to yourself "I'm mediocre and I'll probably always be mediocre, but that's OK"?! or is that just being defeatist?
I don't see any real limits myself, other than the fact I'm really lazy. Big name players got to where they are because they practiced their craft instead of drinking cider and setting fire to things like I did. I suppose there must be some physical limitations; but like an athlete you can still 'hone' yourself to improve. Any chimp (with practice) can ape a 'big name' player, but crafting a bassline of their own may make them sweat. The other day I read something which half surprised me,it was an anecdote about Yngwie Malmsteen. Yngwie had ovheard another guitarist bragging that he could "play Yngwie's licks faster than Yngwie could", to Which Malmsteen (rather wittily) replied something like: "That's nice. Can you play any of your own?" I never thought I'd hear Yngwie backing the virtues of originality over speed & technical proficiency! I don't want to be the cat among the pigeons but as far as I'm aware, no one outside of musicians circles listens to or cares about 'advanced' playing anyway. Except a few die-hard jazz fans maybe? It's like Mozza sings: "Because the music that they constantly play, IT SAYS NOTHING TO ME ABOUT MY LIFE" As an analogy, Sunday league football players aren't going to be as good as Henry or Ronaldo, but that doesn't mean that they should stop playing or even label themselves mediocre. Only you will really know what you're capable of, and if you've played your best or went on autopilot for a couple of numbers. I think everyone still has some room for improvement. I have a lot of room for it. Anyway, that's me done. I don't even know if I've answered your questions!
  9. New Year's Day by U2, or Keep the Faith by Bon Jovi. I think..
  10.
Do you ever play it in public ?!

at least no one will steal it
You guys are harsh. I don't think it's that bad per se, it's just a bit unusual. Wrapping paper? It looks like a bathroom! Cool.
  11.
Thanks all for the answers.....I think I am going to buy some D'Addario and i wish decide between: D'Addario Half Round Bass 40-95 Strings ENR70 D'Addario Half Round Bass 45-100 SL Strings ENR71SL D'Addario Half Round Bass 50-105 Long Strings ENR72 D'Addario Half Round Bass 55-110 Long Strings ENR73 I always used 50-105, but I want change and try something different, I was thinking about 40-95 but can I have some advice about it? Which one of these should buy? Thank you again!
I normally use 45-105 in rounds, so went for D'Addario's closest match (45,65,80,100) and didn't really notice too much difference.

    Ibanez bass
I really like the look of the Ibanez SRX-305. Just wondering if anyone owns one, or if you know if its worth the money. thanks, Jez
Looks pretty meaty. Are you into heavy rock and/or metal?
  13. Ishibashi have secondhand and new jags in, if you're still tempted. I am.
  14.
Try these D'Addario half rounds. I use them on my 55-02 to get a mellow sound for soul and blues.
I found the D'Addario half rounds to be more flatwound-like in feel and sound that rotosound's half wound equivalent; so if that's the sound you're after then check 'em out. I've never tried Elites half wounds though.....
  15.
They're obviously not really needed otherwise every bass would have one fitted.
That's true, but I do like the extras in life. Also, at a couple of gigs I've had to plug straight into the PA when whoever was supplying the bass amp didn't show up. Thank f*ck I had active tone controls!
Not for everyone, but very useful for those who want the maximum control of the bass tone at mixing.
Now that's what I'm talking about. For a small outlay of cash (£3.50 for a neutrik on ebay, with P&P) I thought it could be useful addition.
I am just dreading the cable spazzing out at a gig or something.
spazzing out? do explain before the PC brigade close this topic. Cheers for the answers guys, though if anyone else has more to add feel free.
  16. Has anyone on here ever fitted an XLR output onto their bass? I've seen 'em on high price jobbies (Wal, Overwater, Alembic etc), but not really on much else. Are they relatively easy to fit, or are they a right can of worms? Ta very much.
  17. Here's the harmony central reviews on it. Sorry if you've already looked on HS.
  18. I can't help you out, but would like to know (about a transcription) as it's a sweet line in a killer song.
  19. Back on track with this topic... This may be a better link to their (ishibashi's) jap fender stuff (though it does say at the top of the page that these are for domestic (ie Japanese) sales only) basses scroll down a little and click 'fender japan' under the 'domestic brand' header ....but I have (yet) another question. The basses seem to be offered in 2 shades of white, OWB & VWH. I presumed OWB would be olympic white, and VWH would be vintage white. However, in the little pictures they use to display each finish, VWH looks 'whiter' than the OWB. Is this correct? I always presumed that olympic white was pure white, and that the vintage white was a kind of 'fagburst' creamy colour. Can anyone clear this colour business up, or the domestic sales only bit?
  20.
I can't find the new stuff on the Ishibashi site...
.....that's what I meant to say!
  21.
Go to the Ishibashi site (see the thread on Importing guitars for the link) and check out what is available.....
I haven't been off the site for the last week, but I find it unbelievably confusing.
  22.
Maybe someone liked the basses so much that they bought the company.......
Groan
  23. I reckon I'd be up for a nice white Jazz (like the one fleamail is selling on here, only (hopefully) cheaper), but I'm unsure as to it's exact model name/number designation. Can anyone tell me what it is that I crave? And what kind of financial damage do y'all reckon I'd be looking at? End of questions, for now.
  24.
i want one, is there a badass bridge that accepts through body strings??
Yes, the badass 3 bridge accepts through-body or top-loading. I've got one on my TB.
  25. I've used Steve Robinson (Manchester Guitar Tech) a few times and he's alright. Drop him an email and talk shop about prices and what you want doing; that's what I did.
