Choose what you like playing. Feel and ability to make MUSIC is what's really important. I would do lots of simple stuff that requires great feel and listening skills, and only one or maybe two that are technically very demanding. But please don't take me too seriously, I have no idea what these people expect from you. I do know we've come across a few graduates while auditioning who simply can't gel with a band and do the things expected of a [i]musician[/i]. Try something like some Scott Thunes stuff from Zappa's band perhaps. Wonderfully musical, compositionally and harmonically intricate, and technically quite demanding bass lines. Dupree's Paradise, Zoot Allures, Alien Orifice - I can point you to a transcription of this, it's superb, but can your band play it?

It just needs a lot more organisation on my behalf than "show up and prat about with a bass a bit".[/quote] In that case, get a drummer to do it with you, and demo the equipment's properties and capabilities and how it sounds while you play wonderful grooves, riffs and licks with the drummer, while also demonstrating how versatile the equipment is. You can then teach them about EQ strategies and how to musically lock in with a drummer.

Cheers.[/quote] I hope you take this in the way its intended, but if you are having difficulty with this, are you questioning what you have actually been taught, and if a 45 minute showcase is the right way of appraising a bass student's ability? Personally speaking, and probably because I've been around for a while, I would be a bit disgusted at this approach and would be demanding the tutors and governors demonstrate for 45 minutes, their approach to teaching bassists.

My Jap Jazz had a taper at the output jack end so I had to ream a millimetre or two in so the switch housing wou;ld go in, but most normal jazzes don't have a taper route.

John is incredibly helpful and a real gent, so don't be afraid to call him. If you tell him you are a basschat member (and can demonstrate that), you get a discount, I forget what it is, either 5% or 10%. I only asked for that on the first one I ordered as I personally don't want to take advantage and I see it as an introductory offer. The J-Retro 01 will transform your bass into a tone monster, but still has passive modes which still work with a dead battery and sound like your original bass without the preamp. And unless your pickups are complete sh*t, you won't need to change them. I swear to you, you will ADORE the J-Retro, it's voiced beautifully. And it's virtually solderless as the pickup connections are screw terminals. Only the grounds needs to be soldered but you could probably get away with twisting the bare wires together securely and taping them. The bass they're going to go on is an Ibanez SR505.[/quote] 34" is standard for a normal electric bass is is described as Long Scale. Extra Long scale is usually 35" and over, which is more common on basses with more than four strings as the low B will have higher tension. I think GAK have listed it wrongly, either the picture or the description. What it says on the packet is what matters. I would be happier putting 34" long scale strings on a 35" scale length than I would the other way around as the silk wraps might be longer and extend over the nut. There is a BC member who either owns or works at GAK, don't remember the user name though so that's about as helpful as a plastiscene pickaxe.
