1.
I could name three that are easily as good (one of them far better actually), but I don't want them being swamped by bloody bass players.
For god's sake man.
 2.
WOW! Such innovation! They're ever so slightly different to all the other Fenders available & use "new" features that other manufacturers have had as standard for years. Still, I'm sure there will be long queues of people waiting to spend their wad on them.....both literally & euphemistically.
They seem markedly different to me.
 3.
All though a good idea, I'd rather keep it strictly bass related. There are already guitar dedicated forums out there.
But most of them are sh*t and full of little ***** with nothing useful to say. I would like the BC team to create a discrete Guitarchat forum moderated in the way this is. BC seems to me to be 'in service' to bass and most of its prolific members appear to espouse a similar attitude, that its the bass and this forum is what's important. Most decent guitar forums are pretty much instrument-specific due to the vast numbers of guitarists around. A general guitar forum might be difficult to moderate usefully.
 4. Man: So what are people saying about these trousers you got me, Penelope? Woman: Dunno, I can't seem work this iPad, Brian
 5.
But we know guitars and basses are highly variable - I have 3 strats here, and each one sounds quite different due to distinct constructional and hardware differences. Don't forget that in this study they weren't being asked if they sounded the same - quite the opposite, they were asked which they preferred for sound and playability. I wouldn't be at all surprised if some preferred a well set up modern Fender to a vintage instrument with a more 'retro' set up, heavy strings and high action.
Quite. Anyone handed Stevie Ray Vaughn's Strat would be almost unable to play it with the high action and string gauges, but listen to the tone and the music the man made with it.
 6.
Hmm, first ones that spring to mind are "London Calling" from the Clash, and a live version of "Zoot allures" with (I think) Scott Thunes, can't remember which Zappa album though, really meaty tone and solid playing all the way. Edit: It's on "Does humour belong in music?"
This one. It's probably my favourite too. Although I prefer the version on Make a Jazz Noise Here. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fzScdXbGBt8
 7.
Just checking Thundercat's CD out. Sounds quite interesting to my ears. There are some video clips knocking about of him playing an MTD 6 string bass, he is indeed very talented. Whether he is the future of bass I am not so sure. He does however come from a family of monster musicians, his brother being Ronald Bruner Jr, one of the hottest new young jazz/fusion drummers to emerge in recent years. Ronald also has a somewhat unconventional playing style...maybe it just runs in the family.
Ronald is pretty fabulous http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S41IlaZZMv0
 8. It will be on a big stage with good lighting. Take this opportunity to get a really good promo video together. .
 9.
Wow how pompous do I sound there about threads "degenerating"!!? I mean take this thread wherever you wish LOL. Seems I am obsessed with tone right now so anything about it and how you achieve certain sounds is good to know
Alex Claber's piece in the latest Bass Guitar Magazine is all about TONE. It's interesting and very useful.
 10.
You'll never pick up your bass if you're not inspired to do so. It can seem like a bit of a mundane task at times in comparison to work or whatever, but you just need to be able to find what inspires you to pick up and practice. Often if I'm not in the mood to play my bass I'll put on some music and listen to my favourite bass players to get inspired, I think that's the best way to do it. Because my basses are usually at our studio I rarely get the chance to practice myself much anymore, but I always try to to get a few hours in every couple of days because I love playing. You just need to find the things you love playing and then you'll get inspired.

I uess good way to spend more time playing than reading forum is to have someone to play along with. Have you tried?
You need to have the discipline to pick it up and learn summat new, after that, progress and inspiration usually keep you playing. Then you apply that learning, unlock a mystery or two, then learn some more and so on and on.
 11.
I'm going back ages Nig, there have been some extremely disparaging comments about music college over the years here. In a fit of Christmas goodwill I thought I'd drag up old forgotten comments
Riiiight
 12.
I think the vocalist is from a Scandinavian Pop Idol show. Check out Dirty Loops new cover- Beiber's "Baby" Another great cover with some great bass playing and more fistfuls of chords.
Yep, there was another thread about that just before this one It's f***ing incredible!
 13. Edward, you sound like you are afraid of people and feel vulnerable because, despite your persona on here, you are easily hurt. You may procrastinate because you have high standards that are hard to reach and basschat is an easier way to express yourself for less real effort than learning your instrument to a high enough standard. You're obviously imaginative, and creative, and can express yourself clearly. I think the only way out of this for you is probably a large dose of self discipline and self belief. But, if you think life's a bit of a waste of time, what's the point in all that pain for gaining little that would make any difference to anything? Sorry mate, I just realised I'm talking about myself
 14. Jesus mate. How many musicians actually make millions out of writing credits? f*** all mate. That's your answer. And bankers are no more parasites than anyone else living in the UK who buy their food and drink and furniture and clothes and technology from producers and sellers who exploit people in poorer countries.
 15.
Which one of them's in the club?
The Swedish one.
 16.
they show just how playing with good feel and time makes for an incredibly full sound... everything is in the right place dynamically as well as in placement terms, it all works and so sounds like a whole that is greater than the sum of the parts.... very mature ability for such young guys.... I remember some threads on here about music colleges being sh*t... well obviously they are, if all they can do is produce players of this calibre
I don't think anyone said they were sh*t, Jake.
 17. Hello! My birthplace spawned The Specials and the Selecter.
 18. This Danny geezer's got a wonderful voice!

 20.
Here's the chords for the intro. The original's in Eb but they've re-harmonised so much it doesn't really have a key center anymore. Great band!
I reckon it does have key centres. But they re hard to get a grip on. Is that chart the original or what Dirty Loops are doing? Thanks so much! EDIT: looking at this chart it looks like it's what DL are doing but just the keys chart. Forgive me, I am totally ignorant, as Bilbo will attest to. What is the bass and vocal implying in terms of chords? I wish I had the skills to transcribe it.
 21.
Wow! Who are these guys? I'm off a googlin'. Swedish 3 piece. Not sure about the use of 'pop' tunes as the core material but, that aside, these guys are bloody good. And I never realised Gareth Gates was such a great bass player,
Bilbo, I'm listening to this bloody thing now! I can't get enough! I'm even adjusting to the bass solo a bit I want to know why the chorus makes me sh*t myself every time I hear it. It kills me! That's why I want to know what those chords builds are. I want to learn from this. I know you tell us to love jazz, but this is the embodiment of jazz principles in a format I can't get enough of. I wrote one note in a song that got my band's hairs on end, and this band's cover of a Bieber number is the power of ten to what I achieved with that note. I wish I could afford the time and cash to study properly, I want to understand
 22.
Frank is an odd one, I've always fancied one of his house gigs though. Problem is I'd keep wanting to hear Old Man and the Angel or Once Around the World. Small claim to fame, my band supported It Bites on part of their Once Around the World UK tour; happy days Sorry a bit OT there
You enjoy it whatever he played mate He did Kiss Like Judas and Still Too You To Remember on Monday, they were superb! As were all of the songs. What was your band and where did you play with them?
 23. He's good, our Higgie. Seen his Rhythm Stick cover?
 24.
This is floating my boat. What a band. Fresh ideas. That Linders guys fills are totally omriginal. No cliches to my ears. 10/10
For some reason I am so glad you like this Bilbo. I think it's because it's a perfect blend of music and jazz
 25.
Snarky Puppy are anything but boring...
I'm afraid they are to me. Two chords in odd metre, a run, horn solo, busy up the drums, bass solo, a tricky break into another two chords, a run, keys solo, get louder, drum fills, take down the dynamics of the two chords - make it quieter, let the drums imply a different beat and go a bit mad, get louder, make the two chords fierce, everyone join in and hip hop it a bit, big finale, loud high horn melody. Congratulations. They are talented, brilliant, awesome, but it just doesn't speak to me. It sounds like variations on two chords with tricky bits and chops opportunities. And they look a bit smug but not in a fun way. Sorry. I really can't dig it. It doesn't make my life better.
