I'd argue that most artists love what they do at the time, it's only retrospectively that they may re-evaluate the output, and that is often after they realise their motivation wasn't quite right at the time. Si
It's mostly the distance between articulation and retrospection that matters though.
Well, I suppose I can't know that for sure obviously But he certainly strikes me as the kind of human/musician that only pursues things that he loves, of course that is my own opinion of him. I know a few people who love what they do, because it's not in their programming to pursue anything else, fame, glory, success etc, which dilutes your art. Some people luck out with that formula, but those that don't.....don't care, because they're happy with what they do Si
Interesting. For me, art is a process of reducing the percentage of stuff I do that I think is fake or sh*t. It's a f***ing long process

I've not met, nor read of, a musician that likes everything they do. To me, it seems like it's the quest that's so rarely achieved, and when it is, most of what generated that feeling doesn't last very long. And thank f*** for that.
Well VW likes what VW does, so thats all that matters Si
How you know that, brother?
-
Totally - I think VW gets this kind of reaction because he brought so much technique to the bass - if this was played by a flamenco guitarist on an acoustic guitar would we be haivng this debate? I doubt it - I hear what you're saying NIge and agree with you but Vic has explored so much music as a writer, performer, and out and out player that I think as listeners we have to pick and choose. He's SO prolific that it'd be impossible to like everything he does - that goes back to taste - and there are plenty of things I don't really care for that he's done but when he hits the spot he does it oh so well. Anyway I'm not going to prattle on - I couldn't find the studio version of this tune - but this is one of my fave Wooten / Flecktones pieces - hope it opens some of your ears/eyes out there
You would from me! I detest the tourist flamencos, they are little or nothing related to the pain of the gypsies and the wonderful music they made/make. There's athletics in flamenco but there is emotion in one, and demonstration in the other. Thing is, most people who profess to 'like' flamenco can not distinguish between the two. Check out Ramon Montoya for the really incredible stuff.

The OP was critiquing the audience rather than VW. I have read his book the Music Lesson, and although I thought it was rather too fanciful in places, it is a great book by a master musician. I have great respect for him. But for someone who is such a wonderfully musical person to dilute this by providing the people in his audience who are only capable of appreciating craft, but not art, with a demonstration of athletics seems to me to be a little dishonourable and not serving music. It's like Arvo Part writing Gaga songs, nothing wrong with Gaga, but I think a musician needs to decide what is in the service of music, what is in service to the audience or potential audience, and what is in service to themselves, and strike some sort of symmetry that they can say is truly a reflection of themselves. Music from the heart as it were.
This! This a million times over. Critiquing Victor Wooten is like shooting fish in a barrel. It gets done week in week out. It's not that people shouldn't feel obliged to have an opinion on bass players in general but the argument is done to death. Regardless of what you think of him (I don't ever listen to him and draw almost zero influence from him), he is a talented musician with a lot of interesting stuff to say, both on music and in musical repertoire. He's up there doing what he loves, which is playing music and clearly he's inspiring a lot of people. If you don't like it then go and listen to something you enjoy!
I agree with this. VW is a fantastic musician, it's just some of the bovine in the audience who I challenge.

This my rig for acoustic and electric guitar, and bass. That's it. Nothing else except a cable and a guitar. DI straight to desk, PA, etc.

Playing bass wearing black silk gloves - for BETTER TONE
People do like S**t, but singling out VW, compared to all the X factor rubbish, seems bizarre to me! I'm not very familiar with his stuff, but that clip with clear sound is great. That 'fast stuff at the end' makes total sense in the context of the piece. Listen to Liszt, Rachmaninov, Paganini, Mozart, even back to Bach and you hear that sort of concluding climactic pyrotechnic element occurring time and again. I'm not saying VW is their equal, but that he's approaching the bass in this piece as a vehicle for solo musical expression and compositional development and the music ebbs and flows accordingly. The fact that you can also use the bass to lay down a solid groove is neither here nor there really.
We know Victor is a fabulous and immensely musical bassist. The questions surround the athletics audience, and perhaps dear Victor's monetary exploitation of their needs.
Victors great, so he does clinics, earns money, what's the problem. He has got an audience that buys his stuff, people want it, he supplies it. If people can't sell their Music, it's simple, no fecker wants it. He does the odd Barn dance gig as well for money. Garry
The questions surround the athletics audience, and perhaps dear Victor's monetary exploitation of their needs.
1 minute and 20 seconds of someone not playing music and then everyone claps........ Why do people like that stuff. I'm no Victor Wooten fan, but I don't hate on the guy, this just came up on my youtube during today. I think even if the video and sound quality were amazing, it would still make me hate it. Discuss.
This is a great example of why audiences for bass soloists are usually just a bunch of f***ing boring ***** who wouldn't be able to spot music if it squeaked in their ear. Why do you think we have so much trouble selling music. One out of ten of those sea-lioning charmless chickens will buy his album and the rest will just pleasure themselves to the youtube videos. They will all queue up after this clip to shake his hand and lick his sweat. Pathetic. Wooten has diminished in my estimation for exploiting these poor people of their money, just so they can suck on some Wooten-finger.
Unfortunatly I havent got round to doing any recording with them, all work and no play Mrs. wants entertaining and my finger tips are killing me! However, the strings still sound new! So I'm still very happy with them, although the tips on the fretting hand look burnt out already, I did do a 2 hour rehearsal and have practiced an hour a day since they arrived. Tuning changes with a floating vibrato on a Strat - any solutions?
I use the Carl Verheyen method of setting up my spring claw which is not apparently possible with the Tremol-no, but what the hey, it seems like a superb solution to my problem. Thanks again Wil!
Haha, I just got an email from Kevan at Tremel-no explaining why the Carl Verheyen method is bollocks, and it makes sense. I'll be ordering a Tremel-no asap. "Hey Nigel! Thanks for the email and the compliments. I appreciate them. I wish Carl would stick to being an awesome player and stop trying to defeat physics. :-) The angled claw setup is pure myth. I'll try to describe it for ya: - Number your springs, from Low E to High E, 1 thru 5. - Each spring has a tension level. We'll say from 1 to 10. - Most trems run a 3 spring setup, so we'll just be using 1, 3 and 5. Claw is parallel to trem block: - Spring #1 is pulling at 5. - Spring #3 is pulling at 5. - Spring #5 is pulling at 5. Claw is tightened on the Low E side and loosened on the High E side: - Spring #1 is pulling at 7.0 - Spring #3 is pulling at 5.0 - Spring #5 is pulling at 3.0 (the same would apply to a tight High E side and a loose Low E side setup) Note that no matter the setup, the springs are pulling at "15". In order to get your tuning back to normal, you'll need to get to "15" somehow. Could be 7.25, 5.0, and 2.75....but it has to come back to 15. This is because your tremolo block is solid, and not Nerf. The springs are pulling the same solid mass, so the amount of tension of one spring in particular is irrelevant. There's more stuff regarding the dual fulcrum points and things like that, but hopefully the info above answers any questions you had. Let me know if you have any other questions. Thanks again, and have a GREAT day/night! Kevan" -
I think Nigel's demo was the first half with gloves. The 2nd half has a slight more edge, top end fret noise. Don't fancy the gloves thing myself but would try if cold hands became a problem. I've tried various odds and sodds over the years to get a specific sound like covering a pick with denim to dull the attack and make it sound more like my fingers. On hindsight i should have just used my fingers. Would have been easier. Nice little bass runs too. Quite enjoyed that. Etienne's was too flash and a bit overkill. No soul - just a lot of very fast notes that i can't play. Cheers Dave
Thanks Dave. IIRC the second half was gloves. -
I've uploaded a few things to Yt of me playing along to songs. Part of it is vanity because I want to do it better than any of the others up there, but also because it can be helpful to people trying to learn the tune. Like Linus I've had requests to do others. As to Rhys P's comment about lazy bastards, it's just easier to learn that way for some people mate. It's tech evolution. Nothing to do with being lazy, it increases your work rate if anything because you can learn more much more quickly. Stop being so negative.

Noel Gallagher on Graham Norton tonight

I've got a lot of time for Noel, but none for his music. What I've heard of NG's HFB (a ridiculous name) is dull dull dull. -
Its really just my bands music video, but i do play in it too. The bass is mixed a little low for my tastes, so it isn't as prominent as it should be. Gear was a Squier Jazz Deluxe V, Mids on full, bass and treble flat, Ernie Ball Slinkies, fingerstyle. Through a either an RME Fireface or Focusrite OctoPre (Not sure which) and IK Multimedia Ampeg SVX. Liam
That's alright man! It's way too USA teen punkpop for my taste but it's good. Your bass has no tone that will cut through so I'd look at your eq closely. You need more low-mid mids I reckon. Good stuff.
