1.
If I want to record for a long while and am not that bothered about quality, what is the best recording setting to use? There is a vast choice of wave and mp3 options to choose from and I am a bit bewildered.
Record what?
 2.
You're not looking for a long-term relationship. The thrill of the chase and the honeymoon period seems to be what drives you on, so just keep doing what you’re doing.
Exactly this. You can make almost any bass sound like almost any bass anyway, the importance of the inherent tone of a bass is largely complete bollocks. Feel and looks are another matter, and they are very important. Keep your best basses, have a grand set aside to play with buying and selling.
 3. I'd have that Stu Hamm Factor
 4. Rob, see a doctor
 5.
Had some time a couple of days ago, so thought i would give it a go. Gone down the edgy chaotic nonsense route. http://soundcloud.co...ibb/heros-zeros Garry
That's bloody great mate! Lovely quality recording too. Top work!
 6. I slightly remixed mine and added some voice. That's it. http://soundcloud.co...otface-i-ii-iii See if you can spot the Blackadder reference
 7.
Agreed 100% . There must be some fabulously talented players who feel they can do a whole two sets with a band they have never played with before after one one rehearsal. I would do the gig if local , sure as hell beats staying in and watching rubbish on telly or noodling with a guitar to YouTube vids .
If you think you have to be fabulously talented to do that, then you have low expectations. And it's not like these are original songs you'd have to learn, you'll have heard most of them enough to have the arrangements fairly clear already. Any reasonably competent intermediate performing musician should be able to learn a set, practice it at home for a week, turn up to a rehearsal and expect themselves and the band to make a passable performance of it first go. That's just what you have to do. Four rehearsals is a waste of time and money.
 8.
Can I steal this? Great comment. I *will* steal it
Be my guest
 9.
What he said. Also they aren't very good. At all.
I concur

 11.
I think it just shows how older / classic recordings are not quantized to a click. They move around, speed up, slow down, push and pull - it is this human element that gives things their unique feel. Couple of examples: Chic - Good Times - I heard a recording of the bassline solo'd - form a radio programme (wish I still had it). On it's own it is way behind the beat, and sloppy, but with drums that are bang on the nail it just breathes and grooves. I think many of us know that is is a charateristic or Mr Edwards, one of the finest players to grace the instrument. The Police - Stewart Copeland's drumming is constantly pushing in many songs - not speeding up, but simply right at the front of what is possible in terms of the pocket. Sting however, is a tasteful if slightly sloppy and very laid back player. together it works to give the songs their own sound. And apparently this is why they always used to fall out. There are millions more examples. It makes music human.
I can never understand why anyone would take a constituent of the whole and judge it in isolation. It's like enjoying a wonderful plate of food then eating half a teaspoon of salt and being surprised it tastes horrible.
 12. I think most of the negative comments are from people who don't understand how ensemble music works from the POV of the individual instruments. It's largely ignorance really. The bass sounds a bit sloppy on its own, of course it does.
 13.
Got mine done. Had fun making the bass sounds & playing them (makes me want more pedals!). I think it's another tough month as this month's entries are a very high standard! Anyway, I saw the pic & thought of people setting the stage & everything else for an outdoor gig & thought of the trucks moving about & folk running around setting things up (hence the orange cardigan & other folk standing supervising). http://soundcloud.co...x/november-dirt
Great work man! Really synthy bass sound, love it!
 14.
Looks good! Might not suit everyone but seems ideal for budding amateurs like me. And I can't spot any real downsides, especially with it being non-exclusive. Think I might give it a go. Can't hurt. Cheers for posting about it!
My thoughts exactly, and I have signed up.
 15. It sounds like bollocks, but I'll admit to doing something similar sometimes. I will pluck a note and make a note underneath very subtly audible with a gentle hammer on, usually an octave or a 4th or 5th below. But it's only of any use when the all the other instruments are fairly quiet, and I only really do it on a whim, I would not normally think of it in advance. It can add depth and a little more harmonic density. I would think the technique in the OP is way too subtle for anything but solo bass, which is usually unlistenable anyway
 16. I've played some great covers with Kit, but they are very different to the originals. Aamong others .. Private Universe by Crowded House Chop Suey by System of a Down No-one Knows by QOTSA Kit's great at arranging interesting covers.
 17. http://blog.soundcloud.com/2012/10/09/getty-images/ You can now non-exclusively license your original Soundcloud tracks to Getty Images with a couple of mouse clicks and get 35% of any payments. What do you think?
 18. Technology is simply another option.
 19.
Thanks mate - here's the finished thing: http://soundcloud.co...er-pulled-under Hope you enjoy the end result - let me know and thanks for listening - I've added some dubstep glitches for fun I really have 'finished' now - this recording lark is toooo addictive - I have work to do... Thanks for inspiring me all the same..! Mike
That's a lot better! That distorted phased bass sounds very like something on Caress of Steel by Rush. Can't remember the track but it really is very similar! Great stuff man!
 20.
Hi Nige That is your old headless performing I used my trusty Yamaha keyboard to get the drums. I didn't know we could remix! I will have another go at the weekend. (by the way, Hazel is looking at universities for next year to do a degree in fashion for performing arts!) how time flies
You know what, I had a feeling it was It has a certain tone doesn't it. And I can't see any problems with remixes or even a whole new composition, we all change our minds constantly about music Great news about Hazel mate! Give her my best wishes.
 21.
Cheers dude - I'm not happy with the mix and there are a few finishing touches - but considering I did this track from scratch on a Sunday afternoon - starting with the drums and a big heavy riff in mind - I'm quite pleased with the results - everything was composed out of 'necessity' i.e. I didn't have time to spend too long on any of it - although I had a vague 'concept' in mind... anyway I hope the finished version will be a little better. Thanks for the feedback... Mike
Mike, it's good man! Amazing considering how little effort you put in Looking forward to the finished version.
 22.
I got the arse because I was going to put vocals on it but needed a mic lead because mine had died and I don't want to have to go out and buy one this month and my compressor was arsing about and I couldn't get the guitar sound I wanted for the lead (which was a total botch anyway) and the drum sounds were sh*t so I compressed them and added some gain so the drums sounded great but the cymbals were too heavy and, somehow, in the wrong place and ..... You get the idea
Do you record on a computer mate? You may find EZDrummer is your solution. It's cheap as chips for what you get, and the basic one comes with a rock kit and a cocktail kit for your jazzy excursions. It's about £55 I think. Don't give up!
 23.
Heres my go http://soundcloud.co...8/stomper-track
Hello mate. That has the punk vibe! I agree with skol, you should look at the mix a bit and get some heavy drums on it, but I don't know what recording set up you have and that may not be easily possible.
 24. I don't practice really, very rarely at least. I only play when I need too. If I need to play something I can't, I know how to practice to get me playing it (not Portrait of bloody Tracy of course).
 25. Great pics! Looks like it was a lovely bash. Wish I could have been there. I will be at the next one.
