1.
What really gets me though, is guitarists. They attribute all their tone to the amp, or the pickup, which does make a difference to their tone, but the biggest change they could make is strings. First set of guitar strings I got from my local was a set of prosteels, and the guy was really shocked that i had bought them, and says even now, over 6 months down the line, nobody has bought any more prosteels for guitar. He said guitarists just buy the standard strings, and don't even think about the difference a different set of strings would make to their tone. That's the moment he knew I was a bassist, when I bought prosteels for a guitar
What's the difference in timbre with your ProSteels compared to a cheaper alternative? And what gauge? I use D'Addario 9-42 on my Strat, it sounds great. I have also read from an expert on Gibsons that many players go for higher gauges on their Gibbos to get better tone, but if you have a great guitar in the first place it will sound great with even 8-40s, only poor guitars need heavier gauges.
 2. Awesome, Gav! I'll see what we can do. And thanks so much mate, it should be an amazing night! x
 3.
Tone, like the strings that are partly responsible for it, among other things, is strictly a personal taste, like you say. Some people swear by flat strings, others hate them. This is life. Don't worry about other people's tone. Once you have found yours, and are happy with it, that's all that matters. Regarding the tone in the clip.......I love it.
Timbre of instruments can really affect my enjoyment of a piece of music. Jaco playing Exodus with that horrible tone of his would totally f*** me up.
 4.
No I haven't yet wanted to beat anyone round the head with a looper for thinking it sounds nice.
5.
Jaco Thin, tinny, yuck! (Runs for cover)
Awful tone, Jacos. But suitable to his needs. Rush are my favourite band but I can't stand Geddy's tone on most of the albums.
 6.
I think, as with any effect (disregarding personal preference), there's nothing inherently good or bad about it; it's a matter of it being a tool like any other - some people will use it well while others use it badly. It's just a bit of a case of it being the effect du jour, so there's a lot of it flying around at the moment, but really, you could equally say the same of any other bit of kit.
It's not the same as a chorus pedal
 7. Silvia, that was wicked! Strangely, I have forsaken my Streamer and sold it, got an oldish Fender USA Jazz. I love the Jazz to bits at the moment, but it's strange not feeling like part of a family if you know what I mean. I have the home made bass with the Warwick neck though, I still have a bastard son to keep me in they place Brilliant blog, really enjoyed it. My favourite is that German Flag one, love it!
 8.
The U5 is the mutts nuts.
I have to agree, after listening to the whole vid and then quickly switching between all of them a few times, the Avalon sounds really lovely, warm and more gutsy, that would be the one I would choose. Very interesting to hear, thanks for posting it, plumbob.
 9.
Didn't really want to make this about one player but in this example... he doesn't groove by any defintion I understand.so yes, I'd call him a rock player pure and simple ...
What's the definition you understand though?
 10.
I just don't see it. Of course, this does all depend on people's viewpoints and definitions of what rock and funk actually are (i.e. I could never define Michael Jackson of having ever rocked). I have never been aware of a player that is seriously outstanding at both. Would love to be proved wrong though. Suggestions gratefully received.
It's a perception thing, based on your preconceptions of stylistic pigeonholing. And anyway, funk is a way of life, a way of thinking, Deftones are immensely funky, Beyoncé is heavy as f***. Try to break out of these entrapments, they are not for musicians, they're for fans. Concentrate on what makes you feel good, and what is suitable for the music, whether that be note choices, timing, microtones, nuances, rhythmic/harmonic/melodic phrasing etc. Work on your aesthetic. Forget the labels. Be an individual.
 11.
His brother is a bass player as well ( Matt Bisonette ) . I would bet you that Greg does everything he can to put you at ease and help you all he can , Look forward to it , he is indeed one of the best drummers of his generation . .
Matt's a great bassist, saw him with DLR too, he also looks ace on stage.
 12. Wow, how cool is that. I've seen him live with DLR twice and he's amazing. He's a big band drummer too. Just enjoy it, try not to feel overawed.
 13.
It's just music. And when did micro-timing become more important than note-choice for bass players?
Mmm, not sure I agree. For a bassist, the two are pretty much equal in their necessity. Any intermediate bassist should be able to apply those two qualities to their music with equal panache.
 14.
This conjures odd images. Do you get funny looks at the Deftones gig or the Beyonce gig?
I get funny looks in a lot of places mate
 15. I think the two are intrinsically linked. To make someone want to rock out or dance you have to have that almost indefinable sense of timing, syncopation and phrasing. You have to groove. For me, Deftones and Beyoncé are almost the same. They make me want to move in almost the same way. The notes and style are peripheral to the core skill.
 16. Hey Bob, thanks mate! I'll let you know man Cheers!
 17. only one bassist mentioned so far
 18. Mate this is wickid! I'll talk to the band about it. BRX also gave me a bunch of stuff for Notts so hopefully we will get out of town this year! Paul, I really really appreciate your taking the time to do that, thank you so much!
 19.
I have one in the use and I find it hugely useful for building up understanding of scales and modes... I don't use it as much as I should!
But do you put it up on Youtube and call it art?
 20. You are never further than 9 feet away from a looper these days. I see very many videos of bassists using them to do improvised solos, usually the ol' 6-stringers. But they all sound much the same. Now, I understand how useful they are for practice and that, but are they another reason that ERBassists all seem to have similar approaches, licks and sounds?
 21.
I WANT TO HEAR MORE!!! Seriously. You massive tease, Nige Sounds frickin' brilliant from that clip. I've just played it about five times in a row. Can't make the gig. So I can simply ask - beg - that you someday bring this outfit up to Manchester. Pretty please. Sugar on top. The works. PS: have just plugged this on Twitter amongst various BC'ers and some mates of mine down south.
Paul, you're a gem, thank you! We are filming the full vid right now, last night and tonight, you'll see it in the next few weeks hopefully It would be great to play Manchester! Any suitable venues and/or promoters you know of mate? Thanks so much for plugging it for us, when we get to Manchester I'll buy you a pint or three man! Cheers x
 22. Wow, Bethia Beadman agreed to support us! She was Courtney Love's keys player in Hole for years and now has her own band. http://www.bethiabeadman.com/biography “With a life that includes studying Sanskrit, exotic dancing and stints playing music with Courtney Love and Circulus, Bethia Beadman is a magazine editor’s dream. (But) her music eclipses her back story. Ethereal yet visceral, she draws you into her world. One of the best unsung artists around” John Kennedy (XFM), Dazed & Confused https://www.facebook.com/events/130548957130663/?fref=ts
 23.
Be careful, though! Before you know what's happened it'll have enabled the sale of council housing, smashed the unions and stopped free milk for schoolchildren...
Not at all, the ancient craft of thatching is dying out, good thatchers are rare. I was simply hoping to revive a dying industry.
