1. The shuttle seems to cover a lot of problems Im having. But...is it going to be loud enough?! Ill be using it mainly at 8 ohms....what does it do when you are going too loud?!

The GK seems great...not sure Ill be going down the cab route for them...so Im not 100%.

Maybe I even need to start looking at other amp makes for a fairly lightweight head.

    Any suggestions?

  2. Hmm

The more I hear about GK the more it seems it would suit me.

If any of you are a fan of NOFX...they have extremely fast and fluid bass. Its very clear and defined. With a little 'growl' over it.

Another Q...how would an Ampeg SVT III Pro compare to the GK 1001?

Ive heard they have serious volume problems. Its only 450w compared to the GK's 700w!

  3.
That happens in a lot of places - You get to play a hardly inexpensive bass through 99p worth of amplifier. Doesn't do the bass justice at all!

So you're going for the white/maple one then, MM20?
I believe so. I was after a black body with maple neck, but after seeing just how pretty the white/tort plate and maple looks, my mind was changed!

It still sang even through a cheap amp. The bridge pickup on its own....brilliant!

  4. I've always had a great experience with the old gear. Jason above bought my SMX GP12 AH 400. Great amp, lots of different sounds, full and clear Trace trademark tone.

The only issue is the weight....they do weigh a fair bit. But, built like a tank, weigh like a tank! So you have to 'weigh' up your options hhahhah!

Ive never tried the cabs, old or new. Ive always heard good reviews on them though.

I wish they were still made like they used to be. It seemed they died off for a bit, and are slowly making a comeback. Id like to try a new one, but I doubt its what Im after.

If I had more helpful bandmates I would have hardcased my old Trace and kept it as my gigging/backup head, but I need something lightweight due to my Orange weighing a fair bit. I also need to be able to get it in the boot of an estate with ease.

You cant go wrong really. Pre Gibson is great, not tried Gibson stuff, and not tried Peavey. Shame they didnt just stay as they were.

    Enjoy!

  5. I played THE colour I was after yesterday in Leeds.

I think it was Music Ground. Small shop, lots of Hiwatts.

    White, tort plate, maple neck.

Awesome neck...awesome feel. Felt expensive. Looked amazing. Put most pre-08 Fenders to shame!

Anyway, they had it prices for FULL retail, then tried the trick of...'oh, on offer, £999'. I walked out, I know for a fact that even normal walk in stores will try and match online. £999 is £100 - £160 more expensive than most stores.

Nice bass though. Lovely neck! Shame they put it through a cheap Ashdown combo.....didnt do it justice.

  6. Small, fairly lightweight, compact, loud, solid state or ‘hybrid’ Bass Amp Required – Please recommend

Budget: Approx £500-£600 MAX! (Mid price range)

    Hello everyone!

Really need some advice on a head that fits the small/lightweight ish/loud category!

I already have a full Orange Tube setup, so I need a backup head, and for times when I simply don’t see the need for my full rig.

We have gigs where sometimes we are ALL packed into one estate car, and I don’t like putting my Orange Head in the boot, to get it there to find the cab is absolute crap. For a start, I prefer the Orange to be transported properly, not crammed in a small space, and there seems no point taking my dream amp to some DIY setup sometimes. I did use my amazing old Trace, but I sold it on to a fellow tbasser. I would have kept it, but I cant just keep guying amps and keeping them, hahahah!

So….my quest is now for a backup. I want a head that will growl! Plenty of punch, plenty of watts (if its ss), and reliable. I like quite bright, yet distinctive and punchy bass. I will be using Fender P, MM Stingrays, and hopefully a Fender J soon.

I have decided that the amps that would suit my styles of music I like (anything from hardcore punk, to rock, to funk) and my current band would be perhaps another Orange (Bass Terror), Genz Benz Shuttle 6.0, a GK (if they make a decent head for this range) or I might even stretch to an SVT-3 Pro...but they ain't light! So maybe thats a daft idea.

I’m considering waiting for the Orange Bass Terror (500 Watts, and possible even a 1000 Watts version due out very soon).

Gallien Kruger seem to produce good bass amps, but I’ve heard problems with reliability.

Cab wise, I’ve got an Ampeg 810e (for bigger shows) and the two Orange OBC cabs (1x15 and a 4x10 with horn). So, im pretty much going down the rock rig category!

The heads needs to be able to work pretty well with those cabs and most others! As a lot of the time I am using house cabs! 4 Ohms minimum is fine.

I think the prices of Mark Bass are out of my budget, and not the tone I’m after.

What other manufacturers should I check out?

I think the Genz benz looks awesome. Can the 6.0 give me some real grit? I mean, it wont grit like the Orange, but just a nice amount?

Is it worth me waiting for the new Shuttle 6.0 max? Or is that just a two channel version? I don't know a lot about new lightweight bass gear.

It needs to sound good with tradtional cabs. Im all about tradional heavy cabs. A lightweight head will help on my tour thats coming up.

Is Bass Direct the best place to go? They seem very helpful on the phone. He taught me a lot in 30secs! Nice guys!

    Thanks
