  1. Hi everyone,

I'm after some string recommendations, I tune in D Standard these days and unfortunately Warwick don’t cater for bass players who require a larger gauge than 105-45 which is a shame as they retain their freshness for a good while.

I’ve currently got rotosound roundwound nickels 110-50 but as you know they die and loose their zing as soon as you look at them.

    Thanks

The RM cabs are great, I had a 610 for a while but it was too heavy for me so had to move it on. But it sounded awesome.

They are great, this is my second RM610 sold the first when I moved to New Zealand, couldn’t turn down the b stock one on Ashdowns site.

I had an ABM410 and there was no difference in the weight.

Yeah, I can only imagine how good that all sounds.

The iPhone recording doesn’t do it justice as it cuts all the bass and low mids off it.

My pleasure @danbanbass - have to say it’s a killer looking rig and sounds bloody wonderful too!

I know I will regret letting go of the amp but it was the right thing to do all round. Glad you are enjoying it already, it’s clearly gone to a fine home :)

Many thanks, it’ll certainly do the job and be well looked after!!

Just need somewhere to crank it now...about 3am should do it 😉

  5. After many questions and asking a couple fellow members for recordings/sound samples of the bass head I was after.(Thanks @Merton @stewblack)

I’ve finally made a purchase, extra thanks to @Merton for selling me his head and putting up with one of my senior idiotic moments!!

This place is such a wealth of help and it reinstates my faith that decent people still exist on this planet!

Here is my new setup, I am beyond chuffed with it!!

Enough of the talking, here’s a photo and a brief iPhone tone test.....enjoy!! (Excuse the sloppy playing, it’s been a long day)

    Me too

plus I found the ampeg tone rather harsh

I liked the Svt Classic sound but after all that I had a Marshall VBA 400 for years, despite being it heavy that thing was bullet-proof.

The svt2 pro was my only ampeg experience

    it was a nightmare

I bought it as a bridge for gigging whilst my trace Elliot v6 was repaired

it was forever blowing power valves

id be on a gig and I’d see the biasing lights change from green thru orange to red then bang and I’d have to use an old trace tranny amp

glad your experience is better than mine

This is the Issue I had with a Svt 2 Pro, SVT Classic and a Skunkworks Classic Head - All having new tubes and regularly serviced by different people. Same issue.

I had a Svt 5 Pro after which liked to burn out pcb boards (Ampeg replaced the first 2 under warranty and after the 2nd got replaced I got rid) a good friend of mine had the same issue with his Svt 4 Pro so he got rid of that and bought an Svt Cl which has been doing the same thing as your SVT 2 Pro.

My old SVT450 mosfet was a cracker of an amp and is still going now without any issue.

So safe to say that's put me off really......apart from the cabs which are great.

I've discounted Ampeg as I've owned/borrow a couple over the years which I found them  to be unreliable and the eq relatively useless too.”

Yes I had an SVT pro 2 and it was a heap of crap

The only Ampeg stuff I found to be any good was their Mosfet B-series stuff

Thanks mate. Its not the huge bass wardrobe I always loved to stand in front of, but those days are over. I'm planning for my 60s and 70s, needed to down size!

No worries I know exactly what you mean, I'd love to be able to cart an 8x10 about but when we recorded at the studio, we loaned an Ampeg 8x10 and just to lift it through the doorway resulted in my hand breaking out in blood blisters earlier this year plus is was mega heavy.

I can quite happily lift and manouver the Ashdown Rm610 on my own quite comfortably but I'm sure given another 10 years I'll be looking for something lighter again.

I'm only in my mid 30s but years of poor manual handling and giving it the 'big' I am, lifting things that were way too heavy have taken their toll on my lower back and shoulders.

My carefully thought out rationalisation plan rolls forward. In no way am I selling a bunch of stuff I bought last year just to buy a whole pile of new shiny stuff this year.

    😬

I have become the proud owner of an Ashdown RM500. And its blooming lovely.

Bought from @Chris1127 of this parish, the idea is to pair it with the Ashdown 12" cab I bought last month. Giving me a modular system suitable for rehearsals, smaller gigs and with the flexibility to handle bigger stuff too.

    Essentially a 2x12 with a 500w head.

First impressions. Does it replace my ABM? Kind of. It's similar but different  The drive control is way dirtier than it's counterpart on the ABM, the tone controls slightly less flexible. But it has a shape button which Trace Elliot lovers will warm to and some others won't like at all, needless to say I love it.

A variable compressor which feels pretty aggressive, a good thing to my ears, reminds me of the TC Electronic spectracomp toneprint I put on my BG250.

Main volume is a nice tactile dial; let's you feel each increment as you turn it. It's a comfortable one hand lift, rather than an easy one, the handle on the top is well sited for balance.

Oh and it's loud. Really loud. I've not had the needle close to the red and kept the master at the first click!

What else? The cab and combo are not a perfect match as the feet are on the side which puts the horn at the bottom on one, top on the other. A bit of an ocd challenge, but the speakers not quite lining up may be for some physics or other so I'll live with it.

If you can find one, get a Mesa Boogie Strategy Eight:88. I've owned a Marshall VBA400, and an Orange AD200B, both great. Played through an Aguilar DB751 a few times too, again very good. But the Mesa is by far and away the best valve amp, in fact the best amp period, I have ever used. It's magical.

(I do know someone selling an AD200B though, let me know if you want a price).

Another recent(ish) purchase from here is my '95 US Precision. Just a fabulous bass, love it. I replaced the factory white scratch plate with a red tort one bought off ebay. Its a  cheap as chips one from China which fits perfectly and looks pretty darn good to me. The body colour is a gorgeous off white, the rosewood board is lovely and dark making this my prefect Pbass colour combination.

I could do with getting myself a black pickguard made up for my US Precision, which ebay listing/seller was it?

    Cheers

Yup agree with the TH500, found it a bit meh! I used the DB751 in the Foos band I’m with but have switched to the Ashdown stuff now after nabbing that head. Still love the SVT VR though. Hoping something gets a run out before XMAS 🤞

Nice to know I wasn't the only one who struggled with it, I do miss playing the Foo's stuff but having been playing guitar in an originals band and have promoted myself to bass player

Fingers crossed that we can all start gigging again this year or at least be able to rehearse and jam that's for sure!!

I’m sure @wateroftyne can help on that score but obviously Ashdown are brilliant at that side of things too! One of the reasons behind my wholesale change.

That's good to hear and I'm sure (Hopeful) I'll have no need for anything bigger than 100w as I've 500w A/B Class solid state heads and of course my old beloved (No longer with us Trace Elliot SM 300 GP7 ran at 8 ohms) which were more than plenty.

I have no desire to own another D class amp after my brief foray into an Aguiler TH500 which in my eyes was a complete disappointment, couldn't get a sound I liked in gig/rehearsal settings which I sold and ended up using a Ampeg Svt450 amp which in my eyes/ears blew it out of the water in my old Foo Fighters Tribute band.

Ashdowns customer service is legendary. Their amps are guaranteed for 5yrs and they can repair virtually anything they have made. They have an account on here as well.

Thanks for that, I ment in regards to Handbox.

All my dealings with Ashdown over the years has been great!

  16. Thanks for the offer, I used to be an East Sussex lad but I moved north of the border (Watford) to Stamford in Lincolnshire where north of the border has now moved to Humberside apparently?

From there over to New Zealand for a couple of years and then back to Stamford.

You could say I get around but here feels like home.
