Matamp make a nice 2x12 neo bass cab don't they? And they're known for their chunky tube heads...
Must admit I was expecting a slapathon
As tedious as wanton slapping can be, at least it's bass specific not just a poor interpretation of something else. Turning their national anthem into a funky groove & maybe adding a little slap in there would probably be quite cool, cooler than that over fx'ed rubbish at least.
-
I'm a big fan of RHCP & what he does with them but that was absolutely terrible. Bad tone & bad playing - someone just needs to tell him; you are not Jimi Hendrix, get out there & show them a funky bass version not some rubbish guitar-wannabe trick.

AKG Headphones , and those detachable cords
Lw. replied to RAY AGAINST THE MACHINE's topic in General Discussion
I get the bus through finsbury park / holloway on the way home from work, which means if I forget my headphones I get Arsenal fans bellowing their opinions at each other... I never forget my headphones
Ironic considering how quiet they are in their stadium! -
My heart sinks a little every time I walk into a practice studio & see any of those Ashdown ABM/MAG amps - I just find it impossible to get a good tone out of them, every single one of them seems to have very slightly different designs but when I see that light blue face with the VU meter I just have to sigh. Strangely there's a Carlsbro Viper at one of the studios that actually sounds alright though isn't particularly loud.
So if I flog the 1x15 (I might keep the 4x8) and add a modern cab, I'm getting mixed advice on the ideal replacement. 2x12 seems logical, 4x10 is probably too large, maybe a newer 1x15? On that note, could I reuse the Celestion 15" driver in a more suitable cab??
Assuming both your current cabs are 8 ohm & your amp goes down to a minimum 4 ohm you might have issues adding a 2x12 as most of the good ones are 4ohm (though I believe there are exceptions).
-
I wouldn't pay too much attention to the watt ratings on cabs - they're not really an indicator of volume. Ashdown amps are not really my cup of tea but if you're into the sound of the head I would flog the cabs & get a modern 2x12 - there's a nice plain black TKS one in the classifieds at the moment & someone else was selling a Bergantino (I think) one about a month ago, don't know if it sold.
Really like the bass on this - do you know who's playing?
No idea I'm afraid - it is cool playing though.

Also - as a punter when I walk into a gig (especially heavy gigs in smaller venues so you know only the vocal is going through the PA), the most pleasing sight is when you see a massive tube bass head sitting on the stage - now I know other car stereo looking amps can make just as much noise, I've played hundreds of this kind of gig yet never used a tube-monster but there's just something about them that sets the tone.

In a similar vibe, I saw this guy playing in a pub in London last year - stripped back set of just him playing guitar & singing with a guy on one of those drum boxes they sit on, I was very impressed. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BkMdskZB_So
it's probably going to be a Rumble V3. I'm not a massive fan of the way they look, but because of the price/sound the looks won't stop me getting one.
They may not be particularly to your tastes but I wouldn't say they look bad, they've just definitely thrown their lot in with the faux-vintage crowd.
nothing looks worse than an amp hanging over the edges of the cab, like a fat girl wearing tight jeans.
MeGusta.jpg

Yes it matters to me, not as much as sound & build quality but it definitely plays a part in the buying process. For some reason it matters more if the thing is expensive too - if something is cheap (for whatever it is) I wouldn't necessarily mind if it looks cheap/ugly but if it's expensive it needs to look it.

Advice on changing from Markbass to TC Electronic...
Lw. replied to lastanthem88's topic in Amps and Cabs
The One10's are 8ohm aren't they? I understand what you're saying though - I wrote off the Two10's because of the 4/12ohm thing, I'm sure the logic makes sense but when you want two 8ohm cabs that's what you've got to have. -

Lw. replied to lastanthem88's topic in Amps and Cabs
Might be worth noting that it's very rare someone can "turn down" a cab; you turn down your amp as different cabs have different frequency responses & so need different settings. In terms of buying two I'd say go for it - I don't really know why (though I'm sure I've seen it explained by the experts on here several times before) but two of the same cab always sounds better to me than one cab turned up louder. The BF one10's are moderately cheap at £300 each too. Other cabs are of course available depending on how small/light/coloured/styled you want to go. -
And this is why I don't accept paypal payments from randoms off the internet for anything over £20 - the world is just too full of scammers. Cash is king for me, though I will also accept gold & diamonds :-)
-
Just out of curiousity; why? I understand needing to know the scales/arpeggios etc... as that's what we use as bassists, but what's the driver for wanting grade?
-
If any Warwicks ever become collectable it'll be the pre-89 ones but I wouldn't be spending loads on them at the moment - there are substantially better ROI's out there. What you do get is a really high quality, nice sounding bass for not a lot of money. Assuming that's the sound you like. If I were getting a YOB bass it'd probably be an early streamer.
-
It's worth reading the pinned "impedence etc..." Thread on here, though you've already been given the answer. You should be fine - I've never run an amp to full blast when having 2 cabs attached.
-
I don't think that Ampeg would have enough tbh - I'd be looking at a solid used 4x10; those Peavey's are awesome but incredibly heavy (which fortunately makes them cheap). Head-wise something old & solid state could be good then put one of those Behringer faux-sans amps in front of it for that gritty metal sound.

Were pub/smaller venue bands quieter in the past?
Lw. replied to Twincam's topic in General Discussion
If anything I'd say older bands were louder, although it may just be that my hearing now isn't as good as it was :-) The sad reality is that most of us don't really need all the gear we acquire - once you're past a very low level you're buying stuff because you want it, not need it (though we do make up some nice excuses). -
Now that video in the OP is actually the kind video I really like - not too overly showy but just a really great groove.
-
Fair point, I can't afford both; my amp is my gigging amp, recording amp, practice amp & drinks rest all rolled into one - good thing it's not an Ampeg 8x10 as that would way too high for resting my drink on while I'm watching the TV!
-
Unless you record a lot - we all have our preference for how to record the bass but I do like a mic in front of a nice sounding cab on occasion.
-
If found both my current bands on Gumtree - it's much more active than a lot of the music specific sites. Be prepared for the usual time wasters though.
...my only (genuine) question is, what do people find so displeasing about the looks that makes them rule out trying one?
I've not ruled out trying one but I don't really like the looks of them. This isn't a dig, we all have different aesthetic qualities we look for, personally: - I'm not keen on the stuff they use to cover the non-"retro" cabs (ie all the 12's) - I don't like the sharp-ish looking edges of the front porting (or indeed the visibility of the porting) - I've not seen the new ones but I didn't like the way the panel at the back for inserting the speaker leads sat non-flush/inset (it just looked a little cheap) - I prefer inset handles (though I know nearly every manufacturer is doing the same as BF, I wish they'd all stop it) I know none of that is really important or even has any bearing on the build quality but they add to the feeling for me like the cabs don't look like a premium product (the retro 210's are a vast step in in terms of quality looks, though I'm not keen on the metal grill). I completely get that people don't like the faux-retro styling of brands like Aguillar/TKS (with v-frame) - each to our own I guess. Again that wasn't a dig at Barefaced, I don't want to get drawn into to the war of the fanboi's - but if you ask what people don't like the looks of (talking only about the looks) that's what I would say. I would still try one if one was offered or I was down in Brighton & this is no comment on the way they sound (I've only heard two at gigs & neither band were of my "style" so it's hard to compare the bass tones).
