1. Yes, obviously with such a big string and a dangerously low action, there's more rattle than that of a B string.. but to be honest, it's not that noticeable. the 175 gauge helps with the whole tension issue at such a low tuning.. and is quite 'playable'.

I won't be up north for a while.. but my new band*, I'm sure, if all goes well will have an opportunity to travel a bit.. I'm hoping so anyway!

    * still in it's infancy, so no website etc yet.

Oh, and against popular belief, these strings are actually really easy to get hold of. I have a batch on their way now ;o)

  2. I'm struggling to understand how a completely passive circuit can producs an output boost. My assumption is that there is some kind of impedance balancing transfomer or other involved, as a +3dB boost would be possible without any derogation of tone.

Obviously, trade secrets n' all... not fussed.. but I'd be interested in learning how this works! I'm a techy geek!!!

  3. Yamaha P5000 / P7000 for a very good workshorse with loads of functionality. Highly recommended

Powersoft / all models for superlightweight and very loud ;o) - bit pricey in comparison, but you do get what you pay for.. the very best - most of the range come in a 1u rack, from 700W up to the K20's 5000W RMS per channel ;OD.

  4.
Don't use a laptop while playing bass.

I use guitar pro and youtube while i'm playing to work on things or to play along, and I just electrocuted myself slightly. I had one hand on the strings and the other on my laptop.

Has anyone ever died through being electrocuted by a bass/guitar? I don't necessarily mean a laptop, maybe a mic would do the same if it wasn't earthed properly...
lol... cute. If you have been electrocuted, I'm afraid you are very dead, by definition ;o)

um.. my advice.. Don't eat yellow snow. lol.. Cheers Mr Zappa.

Oh yes! I remember George signing up to Bassworld ages ago, after I dropped him a mail. Nice playing!

  6. How about a challenge and pick a piece yourself? Something like a piano / keyboard thang, that you can split the left and right hand with. A pop song?

I was messing about with Chasing Cars by that ther' Snow Patrol outfit, the otherday. A well known tune with 3 simplistic parts (bass, melody and the little guitar part).. I didn't spend a great deal of time on it, but could be effective tapped.

  7.
I'll just give a bump to this thread - I just got one of these (trading it for my EBS 350) and i just love the warmth and power of these heads - I need to change my cab now so there might be a proline 15" on here for a silly price...

Anyway - these are great amps and this a really great price for one - big up the Epiphani...

    M
Well the last 502 that came up caught my eye too. I have a powersoft poweramp.. and choosing whether or not I should part with it to make up a full Epifani rig is certainly causing anguish, as it was last time! I'm torn, as trying to get an Epi to hear with my current rig is just short of impossible! When I bought my cab , I ran an Epi through it and the sound was lush!

  8.
you will see the only reason I am offloading is I am pretty much giving up playing.
*shock* Jam! Please tell me this is a temporary blip!

The force is still strong within you, young padewan! ;o)

  9. Hi! Welcome...

I can't help thinking that selling the 4.5XL to get 2 VX's is a bit of a false economy. I would do my best to stick with the better cab. Especially as the 2 other cabs will take up more space.. that I am assuming is the issue with keeping them at 'home'?

  11.
Sorry to hijack but what are the products out there for rack mounted effects for bass? What's good and what's not?

    Thanks

    Sean
Well, if you are the sort of person to be upset about your 1's and 0's, I would suggest any high end rack wont rape your tone and also give you some really good quality FX.

I highly recommend the TC Electronics G-Force, that I have been using for years.. and it still holds its own up against 'newer' rack effects.. but to be honest, very few on the market actually have a spec even close.

You can pick up its little brother, the G-Major and also the very new G-System that my guitarist uses now.

If you can find the now discontinued Lexicon MPX-G2 and foot controller you have a great piece of kit with top quality effecs.. but I understand its a bit fiddley to get used to routing effects.

There are various other racks out there, by the likes of Digitech, ART, Boss, Roland, Alesis and obviously, if you have a bit of cash the inspiring Eventide racks!

TC for me everytime. I am VERY fussy about the 'quality' of my effects / noise and stuff like seemless morphing.. I have also spent far too much money on racks!

  12.
Hi mate,

Importing from Japan you will pay the standard rate plus a handling fee. There is a thread about this somewhere.
Yup, the 'importing guitars' sticky in this very forum.

  13. I'd chime in and say, with a bit of extra practice, you can slap on any string spacing. Take a look at Bill Dickens, on his 7 and 9 string basses. He uses a 16mm spacing with little trouble. ;o) Come to think of it Mark King plays a 16.5mm spacing on his Alembics and Status basses.

I'd say the right set up on a bass is far more important. However, a few derivative slap styles appear to work better on a wider spacing and lighter strings.

  14.
is that 4 truss rods Dood?

No wonder you coudln't fit any lights in that neck .. what with that, the mandlebrots and the arrester cables .....
he he.. no, 2 truss rods and 4 carbon inserts .. but yes... thats exactly the reason why we couldn't get the LEDs in as well! Literally no room spare! ;o)

  15.
Well lads a lasses here she is, I give you "Blondie" The pics are the best I can do at the moment. I will try to get better ones done. The pics don't do it justice at all. She plays like a dream, and will get her first outing tomorrow at a gig in the morning, and rehearsal with a different band in the afternoon. :)

    Absolutely gawjuss John. GAWJUSS! Congratulations!

  16. Well, I needn't recommend Shuker ... I think his reputation is well known on the board! *

Thats a nice spec you have. You obviously know the kinda thing you are after!

Tone wise, I think you'll find your pickup and electronic choice will have a greater affect on the tone of the amplified instrument than wood choices, but it's still good to look at striking a good balance. I think Walnut would make a good choice. I know (like my 7er) white ash is a popular choice. Similar in tone to Ash and is *usually* lighter, which I like a lot!

If you like the musicman bite, then look at pups with a similar pole piece arrangement, as they will have similar tone characteristics. For example.. I have pups that have dual rails in them.. and they do an awesome MM impression. (Though I do EQ them a little to take some of the bite out).

ermmm.. fretboard.. well, if you go composite, I think the bass will produce a little extra upper mids.. great for tapping and sizzling slap tones. However, be careful as I think if you go for hifi pups, composite and really hard body woods, you *could* make the bass sound a wee bit sterile (especially if your rig is HiFi too.)

Oh just spotted the natural oiled body.. that should warm things up. Layers and layers of heavy glass like lacquer can sometimes improve treble response in an acoustic instrument, which could also detract from natural warmth.

ok.. back to the fretboard.. sorry I'm typing as I think! - Why not go for what I intend on my next Shuker.. to have a slice of composite with a birdseye top? - I thought I may as well go mad.. 7 piece laminate with a 2 piece laminate fretboard lol lol!

Um.. I hope this makes sense.. I think I am rambling a bit!

Oh.. are you going Single or Double cut?

    * my usual disclaimer about other luthiers being good too..
