  1. I'd still like to get my hands on some Mullards to give 'em a good run for their money! Though anything that can get close to the Telefunken ECC803s appears (from tonal descriptions) to be what I am after. Certainly of the valves I had tried in various bits of gear, they seem to be an improvement on what are usually 'stock' valves in new production kit.

    I guess like basses and cabinets, there's never a 'best', as we all have different tastes. Its good that we can pool all this information though eh?

    go to your mate's computer whilst he is away.. and whilst on their desktop hit the "print screen" key on the keyboard.Now, run paint and select edit > paste - yeah you know that bit..easy. Save the picture somewhere safe that you now have.Don't close paint just yet

    Ok here's the fun bit.. go back and cut all the icons from the desktop.. dump em somewhere hidden.. you could even delete them.

    Next bit... set the picture you have just saved as the desktop background. (you can do this from within paint) YOu should have a desktop that now looks exactly like it did before you started messing about.. (close paint, obviously)

    just watch your mate try to open his icons though.. hawww hawww hawww...

  4. I agree with the above. The multicomp does have a pad switch on the side to stop the input section from peaking..(For active basses) but to be honest, its not a line level device and would probably be better off before the amp.

    Though as has been suggested above, FX loops do vary from amp to amp and some can be reduced down to instrument level on the send and boosted on the return to make up the volume again. (usually on guitar amps though)

  5. lol! Love the replies guys.. yeh, I found that one by accident too.. StewBlack's XP rotating laptop screen fix was a cool find too! If you have an XP laptop, use CTRL+ALT and the arrow keys to flip the screen over. (if the function is enabled in the screen properties)

  6. May seem like something of little consequence, but if you choose a 1x15 to go with your 4x10, see if you can find out if the sensitivities of the cabs are similar.

    I used to own a 4x10 and a 1x15, but the 4x10 was such a louder cab in comparison that adding the 1x15 was completely pointless. The 4x10 sounded deeper, louder, clearer and more punchy. However, adding a 4x10 exactly the same turned the rig into an absolute monster!

    I sold the 1x15 very quickly.

    I'd therefore vote for a matching 4x10. Ultimately, I reckon it'll sound better than the addition of a 1x15. fours10's move more air than 1x15 ;o)

  7. I think its the browser that decides font sizes.. If its any consellation, Mine is ok. Can you change your 'zoom' on your browser in the same way IE does.. If you have a scroll mouse, you can hold down CTRL and scroll up and down to change your page sizes there. Kinda like a zoom thing ;o)

    Interesting points you make there Gilmour. I guess with respect to ERB, I would ask why a piano player has to play in the range of the guitarist? Maybe the horn section should lose the trombones? I feel sorry for the string section too.. they'd be out of a job ;o) ERB is just another wide range voice I think. In that respect, ERB can be considered a full range instrument, in the same way as a Piano could. You could then differentiate between 'normal bass' and 'ERB' in to sperate roles.. if you really wanted to..

    As for the highlighted quote, thats a 'touch paper' I am gonna walk away from as you light it lol ;o) - only joshin ;o)

    Maybe you could rig up a little mixer and earphones, connected to your amp, mebbe if you have a tuner output?. Does your amp have a mute switch that could silence it?

    For example, my Ampeg preamp has a tuner output that is always live, even when you switch the mute footswitch. Ideal for connecting up some sort of monitor system.

    p.s. you can pick up mixers really cheap these days.. Bothe Behringer and Phonic do a little 5 channel on for around 30 quid I think.

    Yeh, I agree with that.. Any boundary pushing is trying to do something new and different, cos, as you say, it has all been done before in one way or another. With a gazzilion and one bands out there all using essentially the same technologies, (Guitar,Bass Drums etc) something has to change to create those new sounds we all crave.

    Nooo John.No.

    I like to play Progressive Metal/Rock that just happens to use lower tunings. I didn't say that progressive = down tuned.

    Its a distinct possibility that as most progressive music writers like to explore beyond the pigeon hole boundaries, that alternative tunings are more prevalent in this genre than others.

    That would depend on a whole load of factors! If you are playing a cardboard bass with guitar pickups into a practice amp, I suspect you wont get much at all from the string.. even worse if it is a dead string.

    I think my gear is adequate to reproduce a low F# at a strong enough volume to be heard ;o)

    My personal choice was that I am really into progressive metal, where as you are probably aware, the guitar tunings are getting lower and lower, thus the bass is going doooooooown too!

    I just really like the sound of it! - My mate, Rueban, a very talented keyboard player used to show off his 'sub' patches on his Triton with our big PA.. I always panged to get that low on my bass .. so it was only a matter of time before I joined a band that pens in those low notes especially for me!!

    I also found that whilst I had the high F string on my Bill Dickens Sig bass, it really wasnt geting used as much as I expected.

    yup, thats it.. just a bit more to the tonal pallete!

  16. Just trying to find a comparison guide on the Phillips Jan 5814a and 6189W - they are both 12AU7.ECC82 and one is practically double the price of the other.. can't seem to see why at the mo. I *think* it is to do with the availability of these NOS valves.. ie, there's loads of one and little of the other.

    I suspect, as they both have JAN status, that there's probably little to choose between them.

  17. I'm sure one of our techies will chime in, but I think with the limitations of bass/pa gear and the laws of physics/biology, you are unlikely to ever hear that note, but your brain will fill in the missing information using all of the related overtones, which you can hear.

    For example, If I play a low F# it really makes diddly squat difference to what I hear if I have a 25Hz filter on or not.. It just stops my cab's speakers from flapping around as they are not capable of producing those frequencies with any sort of power.
