1.
You do have a killer bass Dood, tis nice to see someone else choose a custom with a maple fretboard.

I've actually been in contact with Brian @ Low End and (provided my Smith shifts sharpish) I will be purchasing that jazz I mentioned above. Fitted with a more narrowly spaced bridge of course :) We were talking about perhaps a custom build, and the prices are sooo good it seems almost a waste not to shell out just a couple of quid more and go for the full works with a 7 string. However, that's not on the cards just yet... Will keep you informed as to the progress.

    Mark
Thank you, very kind sir,

Wooo! Please do keep is informed!! I really enjoy reading all of the build threads on the forum.. it's great. Custom builds needn't cost a fortune in order to get exactly what you need.

My se7en string will be getting a little sister to play with soon ;o)

  2. mmm Good point! I guess that'll mean a 'long scale' string, of the 36" variety. I think there are a few companies around doing long scale. D'addario pro steels and Rotosound strings come in long scale varieties. I'd have to find out if Elites do too.. but I think they are actually a fairly long string anyway. If I remember I'll get a tape measure to them for ya! At least you don't have to worry about losing a bit with 'string through body' bridges.

  3. At the moment, I am throwing all caution to the wind and letting my guitarists write the bare bones structure of my bass lines! It's quite liberating actually... as I am making them force me to play differently. They both are very interested in trying anything that is a bit unusual, so I am making myself stay away from all my usual 'safe' moves.
So, I guess the answer would be I am being influenced by my own band!

  5.
Sorry Dood but if I am gonna have a 7 string where the sun does not shine its gonna have to be a single-cut. Maybe thats what they are for :)
lol... I think the headless version is designed for easy entry.. The curves are purely aesthetic. Maybe the doublecut away has been included for a double entry.

I'm sorry... I can't believe I even typed that myself,
The reason why I think the dividing line is between 6 and 7 is that should hell freeze over tomorrow I could go out and buy a 6 string.
Ya know though, if hell does freeze over, you could use a 7 string as a sledge, and ski all the way home ;o) Or a big enough fire to defrost the place ;o)
Until ERB's reach a wider audience - how ever that can be defined - I shall continue to refer to it as stunt, circus, musical novelty act and whatever derogatory term I can come up with next. Its gotta be more than the freak show at the trade show. I would even like it to be more than the freak show at the trade show. I didn't make the world.
lol lol.. John, I don't think anyone is going to change your mind on this thread ;o) refer to it as you will but I couldn't agree with that comment i'm afraid. Then, as it has been said so many times already, everyone has their own opinions ;o)

  6.
For no apparent reason I started to worry about strings. Jon said he can get some made if its a problem, but thinks clamping the strings will be better than using double ball, as getting hold of strings will be easier.
As you'll need the longer E string for the Kubicki extended range D, right?

  7.
easy, 4 fingers = 4 strings

anyone who plays more that 4 must, by definition, be an inbred mutant

    :)
I also have 4 feet. But that's enough of my bragging.. *insert sid james laughter*

  8.
That 6 string jazz may be on the cards after all... I wonder how much that'd set me back.

pop your ideas for a design down on an email, send it out to all your favourite luthiers, then ring them in a day or so to discuss a price .. easy!

  9. Just a quick reply...

I played lead guitar is a band for a fairly successful band for a few years, whilst I took a break from playing bass. In short.. the low end called me back to my home!! - When I returned to bass playing I really wanted to carry on being able to use the techniques, styles and sounds that I had been using on guitar as part of my bass playing. I guess I still wanted to play guitar as well!!

So I had originally planned on a 5er.. but my partner at the time suggested..well at least laid down the gauntlet, when we were in the bass centre (back when it was in Wapping) pointed to a 6 string bass and said "bet you cant play that' - It really was a defining moment. - A happy ending to the story.. I still own that very bass!! It was the best for me, in the shop by complete coincidence.

I ended up playing in 3 piece bands and found the ability to strum chords and do pseudo keyboard parts ended up being very helpful when the guitarist went off to do a solo, for example.

I just thought of an example! I once played at a wedding with another band.. and the bride requested we play Aerosmith's "don't wanna miss a thing" - I was very proud of myself, when I managed to play the piano part instead of the bass.. its rather pretty considering the song is cheese-mongous in a wedding sort of way lol lol

The 7 string came out of a passion for bands that use really low tunings.. I had the opportunity to add the string and thankfully it paid off! I am now in a band who like to include my 'sub pink note' tunings ;o)

disclaimer .. IMHO .. YMMV ... blah blah blah

  10.
Me too - those cabs sounded pretty good in terms of their midrange and low end but my 4.5xl at 125lbs was a bugger to carry.
Exactly why I had to sell them and my SVT2.. was just a bit too much for the 4am unload ;o)

I wanted to see if I could get a cheap 4.5XL cab and loading it with Eminence's stock Neo Alu cones.. (CA2010 or something or other!) that look exactly like the usual Hartke ferrite ones. WINISD suggested that they would work well in the cab.. The power rating would have gone up and the weight would have gone down!

I may even try it one day!

  11.
Now, I'm ranting there also the guitarists (and bassists) that think that soundchecks are just a passtime for me and when they get on stage for their main performance the first thing they do it turn up their volume and f**k up the sound......no, I'll save that rant for another time
As a non-engineer I completely understand.. whats the point in doing a soundcheck! It seems that so many bands don't really know what a soundcheck is for! I have even seen some pro bands stand there and use the time to ensure that their guitar solos sound nice, instead of actually giving the engineer some space to sound check the drummer's 40 piece megakit lol...

Like round the back of the sheds, where it can be put out of it's misery with a twelve bore... lol

I think the thread is ok here... I'm sure it will do full circle before it snuffs itself out. Just glad to see it has turned into a discussion once again.

  13.
I think if he gets too close to some of the debaters here he may well get that experience :)
Not too close to my throbbing girth, please.

    *Da Dumm tishhhhhh*

Ahhh Thangyew ;o) I'll be here all week... Chicken in a Basket, Thursday nights..

  14.
Good grief - the egos have landed - on both sides.
This is Basschat and we're all Bassplayers (to a degree )
Nobody wants to be a bassist. We're the guys stuck at the back. The guys nobody is looking at. The guys nobody is listening to. The guys whose best chance of a f**k is waiting 'til the singer and guitarists have had their turn.
We're the internet geek PC builders of the music world. But instead of clocking 50-plus hours a week on World of Warcraft, we're clocking the same amount of time on forums, arguing over the best type of preamp valve, the best match of active EQ/pickups and how distorted a distortion should really be. We're waving our Fenders, Shukers, Goodfellows and Seis around like "hey i've got a fat wallet and a giant knob - who wants to be me??", just like the tits who post 3dmark scores and processor speeds (and don't deny that you don't know exactly what i'm talking about )
And now we're here arguing over strings while the rest of the world carries on not giving a sh*t 'cos we're the guys that nobody could care less about.
We're all prize cocks 'nudge nudge-ing' and 'wink wink-ing' to each other.
I'm off to take my frustration out on a solid-top baritone ukulele with spalted maple back-and-sides. You don't see anyone shouting at her for having too many or too few strings!!
    Screw you all....

    :)
I like this post ;o)

WOH! Could you imagine a 31 note scale temperament on a 34" scale! lol!! - Or how about on a violin lol!
