1.
Well, Larry alledgedely has his telephone number in the comics.. ring him and ask ! I'd love to know if it actually is his number!
It certainly is his number! True story, Larry Hartke left a message on my MySpace to call him! He is a very busy man, but yeah.. definitely him. (On that number)

Oh.. and instead of going to Thomann, you maybe able to get a new driver replacement straight from Hartke's UK distributor.

Could possibly be Samson.. but It may even be Headline Distribution. Sound Control used to handle Hartke gear, so a nice chat with them may get the results you need.

  2. Yes, very true!! I would love to have a stack of valves to try. I think it'd be a fun experiment. Especially hearing the famed Mullards in a double blind test. I already know what valves I like to upgrade too from cheap stock ones.. but, it'd be good to hear HOW MUCH BETTER the best really are!

  3.
Small World :) I was chatting with Burke Shelly, Budgie bass player, last night and he was struggling to play my Shuker P5 a few weeks ago "I know how to work a Precision" he said then "er, it's got 5 strings ... and can I make the strap shorter?" (He's about 5' 3" )
He did a fine job on it though ..
Sadly no pixie dust was passed on so I'm still a numpty whilst he is still superb:
"Bass player/vocalist Burke Shelley is one of the truly great but underrated singers to emerge in the 70s. His delivery throughout this album is faultless and his bass playing is magnificent."
t'is a small world!!!!
I've read quite a few comments saying "you can't use an ERB in a band context" "people only use them for tapping/showing off" "you don't see an ERB at your local open mic night" etc.
I actually can't think of a reply to people who make such comments as they are so ridiculous.

  4. I own an original 80's Fender Power Jazz Bass Special and the stock models do not feature piezos. I am not familiar with any newer versions that do.

However, the bridge pup on mine is awesome, even with the now rather 'long in the tooth' onboard electronics. I have no need for a 4 string, but i LOVE this bass. I wanted one as soon as I knew I wanted to play Bass. Took me over 17 years to finally buy one, but they are a steal on ebay these days.

Anyway, back to the point.. piezos can be useful for a good natural sound, but to be honest with you, I can get far clearer ringing harmonics from standard magnetic pups over and above that of my bass with piezos alone. I guess this could vary from bass to bass. My 7er with EMGs can sound clear harmonics right up to the 2nd fret.. mebbe there's a bit of technique involved in there too though.

  5. Has been said already- there's one pet peeve of mine.. and thats heel blocks. Big lumps of wood that get in the way for attaching necks to bodies. Completely unnecessary in these modern times of guitar construction! HE HE HE!!!!

    So, I'm a neckthru'er if thats a useable description!

  6. It pains me to see it still for sale too. I won't bore you with the 'if I had the cash' thing.. my account is in no position to be buying amps!

Such a nice amp too. I played one down at Bass Merchant and passed that up.. GUH! This one is definitely in my top 5!

  7. it's the latter, but I (not being a local) have always called it the former.

However, I can't help thinking that, as a 'toft' is a dwelling, enclosure or out building; I wonder if the area had something to do with a chap called 'Lowe'?

My local history isn't all that!

  8. Hmmm, in some ways I see your point, especially as extendedrangebassist, the forum is a quiet place at the best of times.

Though having said that, I reckon there are so few of us to warrant specific dicussion in our own forum. Hell, I think there are more fretless players lol lol.

    I'd welcome responses certainly.

  9.
Welcome Paul. I'm guessing not everyone in Lowestoft likes The Darkness then? :)
lol.. actually, no one does in Lowestoft.. thats why they live practically next door to me now lol lol... I jest.... of course!

  10. I see that there is a Mullard re-issue 'available' made by New Sensor, a US company with a Russian factory http://www.newsensor.com/default.aspx

Has anyone heard anything about these? reviews appear to be a little thin on the ground.
I'd expect purists to suggest that they wont be as good as NOS, but in most cases, thats usually correct. It'd be nice to try some Mullards without the inflated price tags!

Here's some to make you wince http://www.audiotubes.com/12ax7.htm (The Harma valves I use are a close relative to the valve below)

Telefunken ECC803S, diamond mark, Ultra-low noise premium 12AX7, gold pins. EXTREMELY RARE.
New Old Stock in original box. Among the rarest tubes in the world, this beauty is mint in original box! This is a very low noise, special quality 12AX7, made with the old-style Telefunken German precision. These have the ultra wide bandwidth of the Telefunken ECC83, but also have nice matched internal triodes, gold pins, and have been carefully factory screened for low noise. These tubes are currently soaring in value as stocks of them vanish.
     $600.00

  11. I do love the stick, but I don't think I'd ever own one now, having thought for an age about shelling out. I am amazed at some of the great stick players out there, making the instrument look so damn easy!

I think for now I'll stick with the simple tapped moves on bass for now! ;o)

  12.
What happened to your old band Dood - did you scare them off with your 7 stirng :)
lol.. yes he he...

Actually, no not this time! Andy my guitarist (a 7 string player, incidentally lol) is touring with a band based in Northampton and also due to go out on the road with 70's Prog monsters, 'Budgie' I understand. Off to Aus. Lucky *&(*&!!!
My drummer Matt went on tour with THE Glenn Hughes. There's some awesome you-tube vids of him ripping round the kit with Glenn blasting out the vocals! So cool!

So that just left me to find something new to do ;o)

  13. I dunno.. worked for Maiden.. and errr Status Quo ;o)

Actually, I always wanted one of the DBS 7400 heads.. and the 4x12 to go with it. A massively loud amp with a really phat tone. Shame Marshall don't make them still.. Weighed a F***in ton though!!!

  14. Steve, I'm relying on you for keeping my GAS at bay! Thanks to my boiler in the house and now a possible hefty car repair bill following a 'mechanical failure', looks like my Shuker headless fund is well n' truely non existent. Feelin pretty cruddy, having just sold some bass gear,as well. So I'm gonna hang aroud here for a while.. to cheer me up a bit ;o)

  15.
Say, Dood, where are you playing the big 7? I am in Felixstowe!
Just in the process of getting a new band together, so am back 'off the road' temporarily.. but I'll advertise on MySpace when we are gonna tear up the countryside!

  16.
Hey Dan, didn't you have some influence on how the standard body shape had been revised? That body shape really worked for me.
Thats correct, yes. I think Jon still offers the original as well, but I suggested thelonger and wider angle on the lower horn to stop basses with shiny finishes from sliding off the leg.. especially if you lean over to tap down the neck, in the seated position.
Doodle was also the first SC neckthru to have the very deep heelless cutaway. I really hate heels and cant understand why, with modern build techniques there need be anything more than a slight slope! but thats just me! ;o) After the suggestion of using flip paints for the 7er, Jon suggested using the really curvy body, so we had some discussion over what would feel nicest, in particular under my forearm and again where the singlcut shapre leans against the players chest. (I really hadnt thought of that until I'd played Jon's 5 string singlecut he had in stock.. ) As I play my bass up high, to ensure a good posture, having the extra comfort is defintely worth while!

I cant wait to find out what a difference the addition of the headless design will have.. I think it will be nigh on pefect!
