1.
Hi Dan,

I think I may be reading too much into this, but I think you may need to consider other facts than how the p'ups sound on clips: external noise particularly.

I'm pretty sure there's no 'mojo' in the manufacture/winding of simple pickups, and other than J/P/MM styles and series/parallel wiring there's not much difference between the Delano/Nordstrand/Bartollini brands other than the current fashion.

The exception to this for me is active p'ups such as EMG/MEC/Status, who have a much lower noise floor for RF interferance from TVs, low-power lights and WiFi signals.

I saw a pic of the doodle with some electro luminescent wire a while back. I was looking at attaching such things to basses, and for most I couldn't get the inverter withing 2 meters of most p'ups without getting a high pitched squeal, the exception to this was EMG or MEC loaded basses where I could sit the inverter 10 cm away without noise! I actually spent some time with Jon looking into this, and the only real solution was to use EMGs.

Anyway, I'm certainly not trying to put you off the Delanos, they sounded very nice to me at BassDay, and I'm certain that with your experience you may already know all of this, but I just want to point out that there may be things that you can't EQ out that you may not be used to having been an EMG user.
I understand where you are coming from. Certainly it is something we can try out on 'the bench'. As you have suggested, if worst come to the worst, I can plump for EMGs.. a known constant.

I'll let you into a secret.. that wasn't actually electro-luminescent wire ;o) - It was my awesome camera skills.. a slow shutter speed and a blue pen torch. I was actually stood in front of the camera too!

Cheers Joe! YEP, I'm pretty happy - infact, as this is my 3rd bass.. I could just about get away with not visiting to check on it at all and know what I am getting... not that I could do that, of course! I'd wanna get involved lol
That is a nice spec Dan!

Just one question about your choice of p'ups: The Delanos, previously you've very much been an EMG active person, having tried them at Bassday, I think that the Delanos are quite different (unless they're making an active one I've missed).

I'd hate to think it was just that they are the current fashion and Nordstrand are now out of favour? :)
I appreciate your comments! I must admit, I am throwing it out there a bit, based on the sound of the clip I have heard. I am an EMGer, defintely.. so I hope I am not making too much of a wrong turn!! I like the tone of the Delanos! I'm having a 3 band EQ installed if there needs to be any tweaking involved!
i feel another epic build diary is on the way
lol.. I don't think this one will accrue the 950 replies an 29000 views of the 'Doodle' thread!!! You guys helped make my 7 string!!!

I have had some more discussions with Jon, just fine tuning the spec. I am really looking forward to this build. To have 2 workhorse basses that are nicely matched will be 'spot on'.

Any other basses will stay 'at home' .. poor things! They'll feel neglected!

  3.
haha +1 for that,

Heres me playing mine at a gig earlier in the year
I gave the Ashbury a bit of abuse at last year's BassBash. G-77 kindly let me put the vid on my MySpace page. Check it out.. ( Unfortunately you can't really hear the li'l fella, as there was a great deal of other bass noises in the room at the time!)

  4. The Hartke transporter cabinets have a lower 'sensitivity' than a lot of other paper coned cabinets. This as a result *could* make the cabinet sound quieter than another with the same amp settings, if the other has a higher sensitivity reading.

    Lifted from another site:-
Sensitivity ratings are given in decibels per watt at one meter, or db/Wm. So, with an input of one watt (usually white noise), a speaker with a sensitivity of 90 db/Wm will produce 90 decibels of sound at a distance of one meter.
5. You will certainly hear some varied accounts. The previous incarnation of this forum 'BassWorld' had some very colourful posts about them. Mark Gooday himself came on to make a very public post about their gear too!

I am pretty sure a lot of the 'issues' are now in the past and to be honest are probably not worth mentioning with ref to new kit. Ashdown get very good reviews now. I haven't used Ashdown in anger at all, so can't offer any experience reviews.

Ashdown have quite an endorser list, so they can't be that bad!

  6.
Or if you're a cheapskate like me, get a 50p neoprene mousemat, cut up & stick some slices together with double-sided tape or glue.
Ah cool! I used that 1 inch wide draft excluder foam with the sticky back ;o) Amazing what you can find round the house!!!

  7. also, try a cable plugged in Send >> Return, thus bypassing the internal connections.. I had an amp once where the sockets were a bit iffy, so left a patch cable running between siad sockets. Worked fine from then on. Just something else to try.

  8. Thanks Jim!

Eventually I'd like to move to backline all from one company, and I have always loved Ampeg heads.. in as much as I sold my Ampeg gear, yet seem to come back to it. Never been tooo sure about the cabs though. The BXT seems, from reviews to be the most 'HiFi' in tone.. I don't mean 'flat response', more 'scooped' with sparkly highs and deep lows. Which I have found is my preferred sound. I always thought I wanted 'flat response' monitors.. but infact I just prefer 'uncoloured' ;o)

That not to say that I could end up with a different head, to match my current cabs though!! - Or just lose interest and replace both.. as I seem to do.. WHEN WILL I LEARN!!!!!!

  9. Awww guys, I do't feel so bad about my affliction now!! Ifeel guilt ridden towards the basses I don't really play, like I am ignoring a child lol!

My plan is to have 2 main gigging / recording / workhorse basses. They will be my Shuker 7er and the Shuker 6 that is 'in the making'.

However I do own a couple of basses that probably will never leave the house. I love them to bits, as they are instruments that I have wanted since I first started playing, but there was no way back then that I could have afforded them. I even decided that I had to sell my CIJ P bass the other day, but was slightly relieved when I found out I could afford to keep it. (GAS was to blame!!)

My Fender power jazz bass special isnt really worth a great deal, moneywise.. but its the first bass I ever really wanted.. I guess it was GAS at first site *insert that heart/love emoticon* - I'll never use it at a gig.

So I feel guilty having them at home unplayed.. but they do look rather lovely hanging up on my wall.

Well, I guess some people hang artwork on the wall.. I like people to come in and have a play on my basses.

  10. Hey Mate! Ahhh good news then ;o) I too have been snared by the sound of those Delanos! I originally wrote the idea off as I like my EMGs so much.. but then I heard 'that clip'. Flippin 'eck!! Thats a serious pickup isn't it??? Sounds like the EMG in the top end, but there's just more in the 'guts' range I think.. the sort of warm lower mids.

As for the birdseye maple.. I have recieved a few pics sfrom Si (OldGit) to take a look at. He has some really nice slices to chose from, which is great news.

I was gonna say that I think we'll have our new babies at the same time... but then I forgot yours is having part of a NASA space shuttle control system installed as well ;o)

    mmmmm MIDI *homer gurgles*

  11.
Sorry I don't know anything about it, but at 122lbs you better have a strong back (or a roadie(s))
Yeh, kinda makes me appreciate the Epifani 610 I own now, all the more!
I owned it. What would you like to know?
I guess its hard to ask any questions unless you have heard and used Ampeg SVX. Just wondering if the cab sounds at least similar to the sim. How do these cabs perform live? Most reviews have been very good.. one or two suggested they didnt have any b@lls .. but I found that hard to believe at 600W/1200W each.

  12. OK, here's the spec. Actually this is pretty much the spec I had over 3 years ago when I first thought about getting a headless. Its nice to be able to get the wheels in motion!

6 string headless doublecut with 'doodle' custom ummm 'stuff' ;o)
    34" scale

    16mm string spacing
    15" - 16" board radius
7 piece laminated thru neck wenge / maple
    birdseye board, high gloss
    two way truss rod
    carbon fibre reinforcement
    zero fret
    medium frets
    custom lit sig inlay
neck carve as doodle, very little heel, if any.

    white ash body
    polyester basecoat
    flip paint of some sort........!!!!!

    black hardware
    monorail tuners
    dual string locking nut

Delano SBC 6 pickups - ok... heard these the other day.. they are SOOOO good.
    Shuker preamp

my design (doodle) ramp between pickups.
engraved control covers same as doodle again!

The body shape and contours are the same as my 7 string Shuker also. Tried and tested!! Stick to what feels right.

  13.
Since you say signature bass, I guess that means that Shuker are making it as a standard model available to others after? Or is it just a normal custom?
Well no not really, it's my custom, to my spec with my signature on it lol... I'm very lucky to be endorsed by Shuker.. and I'm just saying thank you by telling people 'Jon makes my basses' if you see what I mean. I wouldnt be upset if someone wanted a bass just like mine. I'd be thrilled infact. Blimey, I'm hardly *insert name of your favourite world class bass player* - but I have a really nice hand made bass ;o)
