Yes.. I do have a rather painful reminder of a recent sale I had to make. If that wasn't bad enough.. my car siphened another 180 quid from my bank account today. It has been a very expensive couple of months!

  2. I know this is an old thread, but I thought I'd let you know my findings guyz.

My mate brought round his pocket POD tonight and we stuffed it into my stack. We didn't spend a great deal of time editing patches, but I can confirm it sounds AWESOME through my gear! Filthy distortions to clean woolly bottom end.. even managed a wierd mark king rattley sound as well!

I think if one comes up cheap, I may just say WHAT THE HELL and buy!! - the darn thang takes batteries as well, so you can use it as a personal practice amp with earphones (and an MP3/CD line in) for silent practice.

We tried it with my guitar too. Some brilliant sounds in there as well. Obviously as a guitar unit, it will be.. but I was excited about the bass tones as well!

The unit, despite being a plastic box, looks really sturdy! It features a number of different connections.. a belt clip!! and the best bit? USB to connect to your PC! genius! You can edit patches using the line6 software.. and I wonder if you can use the line6 drivers as per the XT for latency free recording? That I don't know yet.

I think I have just fallen in love with distortion again ;o)

  3.
Personally, I would house it in a 6U rack allowing 1U top and bottom for ventilation.
My old Pro 2 was racked this way and only foam padded on the corners as they are notorious for overheating.
yes, they do get a bit warm! i ended up mounting a 12v dc PC fan in the back. a little 12cm one, connected to a little power supply (walwart adaptor). It's amazing how little forced air cooling u need to make the whole amp outer casing only warm to the touch! As the SVT2 has a mesh back, I attached the fan using nothing more than cable ties. (mounted the fan so it sucked warm air out, you don't wanna blow dust and yuk inwards.

$u was fine in this case, but 6u would leave you space for a rack tuner / effects / wireless etc!

How have they coped with been thrown in the back of vans etc. Have they all stood the rigours of the road?
Mine is still new and hasn't been abused yet. Infact, it has been so molly-coddled, I dont think there's a hair out of place on it :)

  5.
A transformer capable of handling the power draw of an amp will require no less than the same VA rating as the transformer in the amp, so you might as well just replace that. Before doing so RTFM and be sure the amp doesn't have a dual primary that can be reconfigured for 240.
Absolutely agree. 9/10 when this question gets asked its about a US Ampeg being used in the UK :)

Ash, what Amp are you using it with?

  6.
Apart from the pedant in me saying it's F#, G# and C# instead of the flats, due to the key sig being E...

Sorry Dood, I'll get me coat now :)
oh yeh.. G>D>A>E .. of course! i'm such a numpty! *inserts excuse* well.. I was in a rush! lol

  7. Well, I think that yes people should "be themselves", sure. Thats all great. There is no excuse for being disrespectful or thoughtless when it comes to posting on a public forum. We welcome all on here and as I have said already, it only takes a minority to spoil it for others by not thinking before they post.

Unfortunately for the moderating team, it makes us busy, when we'd rather be playing bass too.

The moderating team do discuss such topics together in order to make this forum a nice place. It's the best bass one around, I think.

  8. I don't have my bass nearby at the moment, but it sounds like (E) Gb Ab B Db B Ab Gb (E) - but (considering the MP3 I have is a bit shoddy, the last Gb sounds a bit fumbled and is twice as long as the other notes of the run.. so, an 8th instead of a 16th.) At a guess, start on the A string and move to the D string for the two high notes.

  9.
We are talking pounds...

...and dood is just miffed cos he missed out on flanker's preamp... :)
I'd go out and buy a brand new one if the cheeky li'l beggars weren't charging stella prices for their gear. (In comparison to other preamps in the same catagory)

There are loads of them in every off-topic thread!

Look at this one for example. A light hearted thread and a bit of banter and then someone thows their toys out of the pram in mock indignation.

Its like Old Horse Murphy says, this forum really needs to lighten up a bit.

If someone tells a joke and 100 people laugh and 1 person is offended, who's the one with the problem?
I'm not going to argue with you. No one was in 'mock indignation'. I am telling you what the reason was for some of our female registered posters not wishing to come onto this forum anymore.

We can all have a laugh, sure, but be respectful to those on the forum at the same time. Why should a user feel unwelcome due to a minority who are spoiling it? 100 people can share a joke but it only takes 1 to take it too far.

  11.
"Sexism is hilarous, isn't it. Oh, and racism, always good for a giggle. Don't forget taking the micky out of people with disablilities too! What harm can it do eh, its only fun and games?

No bloody wonder some of the female posters left this forum for dust" - Wil

Or maybe they got bored of all the middle-of-the-road, overly-sensitive "right on" crap that some people post?
I'd still f*ck her, but that's really not saying much.
You're so coarse! Ever thought of rephrasing stuff in your head before you type? I'm guessing I know the answer already. :)

Tal is a talented player certainly. A good musician who deserves to go far I think.

  13.
seems a of of people really favour the bridge pickup on jazz basses...

i only ever use the neck on mine...not blend of the back at all - i find the bridge far too nasal.

    hmmm...
My basses are switched so you *can't* have the bridge pup on alone. So, Neck only or both are my options. No panning required either. My Shuker has such a strong tone, I don't worry about it... Even sounds great with a flat EQ.

I've got the 7-string version of this and it's pretty nice - I'm sure you could make use of those extra 2 frets for tapping as well :)
Also I'd suggest keeping the high F, C, G and D on there and tuning them all up half a step (or just play a tone down - you would have 26 frets after all) rather than using guitar strings, but I wouldn't really know where to begin if I was gonna do something like this so I'm sure you know best
^^^^ is a better idea. Theory being that *if* you could get a light enough gauge bass string, you could tune those 4 bass strings, F C G D up a tone. Have a chat with ARGH to find out what his gauges are on his 9 string tuning. I believe his Bb string is a .0018 (ish)

  15. Off the top of my head, you'd need a new nut cut, a custom bridge to take the 4 guitar strings (as a bass bridge's string mount holes will be too large) and may also need tuners that are suitable for guitar strings, if said bass doesn't come with keys like the Gotoh GB707/ Hipshots for example. As you have said, you'd be looking at a decent set up too. I'd recommend finding a bass with 2 truss rods, as you'd be able to set up either side of the neck for the amount of relief required for the massively different gauges. oooh.. there's a good point..

I wonder what the effect of having very high tension on one side of the neck and much less (guitar strings) on the other? I'd hazard a guess that it probably won't be too healthy unless it has the same amount of strengthening as my 7 string custom lol!!

You can buy 8 string basses on the cheap from ebay by Galveston.. can't tell you what sort of quality they are, but I'd make a guesstimate considering they are eight stringers for less than 500 quid.

I think you are asking for quite a specialist bit of kit and a custom build isn't out of the question... but, unfortunately you suggest the budget is. EEK!

  16.
Also, if an active bass goes into a pedal (like an aphex bass xciter, or hartke vxl) is it still classed as active, or could the signal then go into the low gain/passive input on an amp?
Again, this would depend on the level of the output signal. Potentially the output of these pedals could be on the hot side, so I think as a starter, try the active / attenuated input.

  17. Hi.. well in short.. no you don't *have* to use those inputs specifically high for passive, low for active etc. As it happens, I have owned active basses whose outputs are quieter than that of a passive bass.

Herein lies the clue. - Basically, if a bass has a very highout put and constantly clips the preamp into distortion, use the attenuated input instead to clean up the sound. If you have to wind the gain up quite high to even get it to slightly clip, then use the non attenuated input.

(some amps don't have seperate inputs, but have a switch to change between the low/hi modes)

Now.. you may WANT to overdrive the preamp, in the case of a valve amp for example.. in which case, a higher output bass into a non attenuated input will help you get the drive you need.

ok.. So that seems logical.. well.. enter amps like the Ampeg SVT. The input path on my Ampeg preamp looks like this:-

o- input - pad switch - first valve - peak light sensing - gain control - second valve EQ circuit ... etc etc..

You can, using a hot signalled bass with no attenuation to distort the first valve in the circuit, with the input gain turned all the way down! The peak LED will be going nuts, but you wont hear a thing!

My point is, its a good idea to understand the amp you are using to know where the signal is hot!

Another example, using my Ampeg again, I can stop the input gain light from coming on with a low input, but add so much boost in the EQ, that the peak LED for the EQ flashes instead! - A different sounding drive and dirt available there too.

In short, trust your ears.. Some love the sound of an overdriving preamp.
