1.
I think you would hear loads of difference if you changed your amp - whether you like it is another matter.
or in other words, "Welcome to the world of G.A.S"

  2. Yes, I totally agree.. the ole addage 'if it ain't broke...' etc etc... I was using the POD XT rack straight into a power amp.. I think its a really good way to go. I loved my XT, unfortunately had to sell at the mercy of a motor vehicle!

I'll have another one one day!

Out of the list above, the power amp that stands head and shoulders above the rest for value for money is the Yamaha P5000 or P7500. Absolutely ram packed with features.. and buying online they work out pretty cheap too.

  3.
It's all about head room, frequency responses and all sorts of technical s**t. If you have a 120 watt amp, it will no doubt sound loud enough but the sounds may be a bit narrow - like the low B won't really project etc. Not much use for an ERB, eh Dood?
heh heh, only just spotted this one! Yes, I do find that a small low powered rig is at a disadvantage when it comes to producing a solid sub B when up against 'Animal' and Mssr's 5150 and RectoVerboTwin respectively.

  4. Where do you start!

    Ok..

    Yamaha (P series are great)
    Peavey
QSC (PLX series, awesome! as is the heavier RMX range)
    Stewart (2.1)
Chevin (One of the very best)
    Powersoft (yummy)
    SoundTech (on a budget)
    Behringer - you know them...
thats a few off the top of my head

  5. you will have probs chap! I think you'll find that your pocket PC isn't a USB host.. and therefore wont recognise any USB hardware plugged into it, in the same way a laptop or PC can.

Other than 'Notes', (a windows mobile app that recorsd in momo) which can record through the on board microphone (like a dictation machine) I dont think you'll get a stereo input.

What pocket PC do you own? I'm using the O2 Orbit.. (and I record all my ideas in dictation format whilst I am out and about)

Your other option is to by a little minidisc recorder, which are really cheap these days, or an MP£ player with a mic/line in.

yes.. its a pain in the backside, but I dont think Pocket PC's have reached HiFI recording yet ;o)

  6. The HZ's aren't bad pups to be honest, but on the flipside, if you can find some for a good price, I think pups is a very good first upgrade. When it comes to which, there are a multitude of options.. but your biggest problem will be finding pups that slot in the same routs!

I assume you'd prefer to stay passive?

Seymour Duncan I know do pups that are 'EMG' size. There are many others though, that I can't vouch for dimensions... Delano, Nordstrand, Bartolini, Wizard...

  7.
Never heard of them. But I do know that the funk is in the fingers.

How do you get it out?

It comes out when I touch the strings :)
Thanks guys, I do believe my keyboard is now swimming in coffee.

  8. It's his cell phone number alright! ;o) Also speak to him on MySpace too. Though as you can imagine he gets sh*t loads of messages everyday.

I was originally drawn to Hartke cos.. yes I admit it.. they looked pretty! lol..

But I was very lucky at the time to try out pretty much the whole Hartke range Vs Trace / Ashdown /Ampeg / SWR, back in the days when the Bass Centre had a stock of everything! Hartke quite literally blew the competition away when it came to the sound that *I* want.

John, I have to agree though.. when it comes to weight; doing my back in a couple of years ago put me off anything even remotely uncomfy to lift. - Don't think my back will ever full recover. If these new cabs sound as good as the 4.5XL.. well.. I'd love to get the opportunity to find out!

  9. Well spotted Pete. I was havin a brief dicussion with Larry earlier in the week. He said there will be some more info to come. I have asked if its possible to know when the gear is hitting the shores over here. Hopefully he will get back to me with an answer.

  10.
I am in the south east (bit of a problem re: Shuker basses but they look so good I would probably make the trek). Can anyone give me a steer on where to sample some of the beauties mentioned in the south east,Jazzbob
Where in the SE are you?

  11. At least you didn't make the classic faux pas of wearing a 'clockwork orange' face mask on a visit. I could only yempt the poor fella out of a darkened cupboard with chocolate hobnobs.. and then I had to promise never to wear the mask again.

Aww it was like seeing a scared puppy on fireworks night.

  12.
from the Fender website:

The ’50s Fender Bassman was the pro bassist’s answer to amplifying a great new invention: the Fender Precision Bass® guitar. This powerful 50-watt rig could easily compete with the common instrumentation of the day: horns, piano, four-piece drum kit with calfskin heads, and maybe even an electric guitar through a nice, new 10-watt amp! By the ’60s and ’70s, the original all-tube “Tweed” 4x10 Bassman was popular with rock, country and blues guitarists as a reliably great-sounding and easy-to-use guitar amp. Even some emerging British amp designers of the day copied its circuitry for use in their most celebrated designs.
Yep, and the Fender Dual-Showman preamp design, that is very similar to the Bassman has found its way into the likes of the best Alembic, Ampeg, Marshall & Trace Elliot amplification.. and there is no doubt more!

  13. Oh and whilst I think about it, there are different modes that the POD uses, depending on what you are connecting to. Make sure you are in the right mode, to get the best out of it! - The POD isn't really a 'plug in and go' straight away.. it needs a little tweaking before it turns into a bass monster!

  14. Take the output of the wireless and plug it into the 'line input' of the XT. If you have a look in the manual of the POD, you will find a section that enables you to switch the input to the back of the unit, using the small button on the right hand side of the front of the POD.

My suggestion would then to come out of the POD's 'Model' 1/4" output and into the Amp below. My preferred method would be straight into the return of the effects loop. thus negating the need for the amp's preamp altogether. Seems a bit pointless when the POD is full of tastey preamps! - but thats my own opinion.

If you want more suggestions how to hook everything up, I'd grab a good cup of coffee and read the POD manual from front to back!

  15.
*rescues the topic from the dead*

well guys, I'm thinking about ordering a pair of these things. just a question though - should I get the Etymotic ER-20 or the Alpine Music Safe Pro?
Both are actually quite similar, but I found that the resultant sound you hear is different between the two. To be honest, they are SO DAMN CHEAP in comparison to how much your hearing is worth, you may as well buy both and see what suits you the best, then chuck the others in your case as a spare.

Then in the meatime, save some cash - buy some ER15 / ER 25 moulded plugs.. ;o)

  16. Its worth mentioning that the Ampeg 810 alone very much has a colour and tone, almost of it's own. I use an SVP preamp with a D Class power amp, which is a fairly good replication of my ole SVT 2 Pro head. However I Use an Epifani UL-610 cab.. and it makes my whole system sound very different to an Ampeg stack.
