1. For those who haven't already spotted Steve's information post, here's a link to take a look at, with ref to 'rants' and libel on the forum.

  2.
It's the poweramp I guess.

Not clipping at the input stage- there is a red LED marked Output Clip which I'm lighting up like a christmas tree at times.
I confess it's on my low B and I wouldn't describe myself as having a "Willis-like-touch" at all so I can compromise.
    I just don't want to!!
It's frustrating when the cab doesn't feel stretched but the head does IYKWIM.
I must admit it's not the first time I have heard of an Eden running out of steam. My guitarist in ma band had said that the bass player from his other band, James had an Eden then moved to an SVT 4 pro. They always maintained that the SVT 4 always sounded louder and balsy in comparison to the Eden on stage.

I've never tried an Eden, so couldn't comment.

  3.
What head do people use to get the most out of the 310's odd impedance of 5.3 ohms?
The cab is rated at 750w but using my Eden WT550 I am clipping the output limit of my head so not really getting as much out of the cab as I would want .
Its probably mostly caused by the low end frequencies coming from the onboard pre and amp eq but we're not talking sub-sonic here by any stretch.
I can compromise and re-eq but just wondering if anyone has found ohm-nirvana with this cab?
Are you clipping the poweramp or the preamp?

  4.
I had one which sounded great with a EBS pre/QSC poweramp.

I heard Ari's one at the bassbash, I think it was with a IAmp 600 and that too sounded great.

It's a very portable cab - only 47lbs is pretty amazing when you hear it.
Hey chap! Still using the EBS classic there mate?

  5.
What's the difference between this and one of the pro ones then?
The later 'pro' heads have a 9 band graphic with different EQ centres, a 'Drive' control, an input gain control and additional gain pad, with a single input socket. The schematic design is a little different too no doubt affecting the resulting tone.

  6.
Dill Katz - best name in jazz.

Nice player; I have Thompson's double live LP somewhere (vinyl again!!) - great sound, nice feel.
I have it too! It's the one where side 4 of the LP is essentially a drum solo! ;o) I have one or two of the albums.. nothing really new and I have no idea what they are doing now.. but still appreciate it greatly.

  7. I have the UL610 that is an equally odd impedance rating.. 6 speakers. 3 speakers.. you get it! lol

I run a powersoft poweramp that gives me 1K per channel (4 Ohms) or 2K in bridge mode (8 Ohms) , so I guess in single channel mode i'm running.. um.. about 750W into it?? I use a variety of preamps.. Ampeg SVP or just clean with a digital EQ in the path.

I would very much love to put a 502 amp through it, or an EBS TD650. I think they would suit the sound of EPI cabs very well. (for the sort of thing I like..blah blah)

  8.
Not Glockenklang but I have a Tech Soundsystems Black cat for sale. Ranked (and priced) up there with Glock but more power and valves (x3) loaded in the preamp! Based just North of Newcastle if you are in the region over Christmas.
One of these days, you and me ARE gonna get together for a big A/B sesh!!! ;o)

  9. Mine would have to be Another One Bites The Dust by Queen. John Deacon is god!!!! I think I would be reduced to a gibbering wreck if I ever got to meet him.. and *that* 67 P Bass!!!

Short of his gold hardware, this is near as I'm getting to that bass!!

  10.
Gets my shout... :)
I rang him up for bass lessons a few years ago out of the blue. He politely declined and wondered how I'd got his number.
Cool! and COOL! ;o)

  11.
Just thought of another one!

Paul Westwood - Barbara Thompson and a host of others as well as author of a great tutorial book (not sure of the title). I had a lesson with him once and, whilst he is no gunslinger, he is a great teacher as well as a good player. May be fit for purpose.
Ahhh!! Speaking of Barbara... Dil Katz!! What a bass player! He played on the Mother Earth album amongst others. If I played fretless, I'd wanna sound like that!

  12. The question i'd ask is why have a 750W head and an 800W head, if the rest of the specs are pretty much the same? Obviously there may well be one in the pipeline, just doesnt seem to make sense.

I asked Dave about building a 1u preamp, but he said (at the time) that he couldnt fit all of the controls from the TF amps on a 1u rack. That was the end of that discussion.. maybe he is revisiting the plan, as I suspect a few people have asked him the same question!

  13. There are different ways of attacking sweep picking. The Billy Sheehan method is kinda like arepggios where some notes are tapped.I would prefer to call this 'sweep tapping' if anything..

Sweep picking is subtley different. Best way I can describe it is to show you a video:-

    http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fusea...iendid=63177036

My very good mate Andy James on guitar. I have played with him for a few years now and is a monster!

4th video down... you'll see at 42 seconds Andy is reaching across and tapping high notes after picking up an arpeggio, This is similar to the Billy Sheehan method, (except Billy obviously picks with his fingers) now move on to 52-53 seconds, watch Andy's right hand. It 'sweeps' right across the strings in a fluid downward motion. This is sweep picking. Obviously can be up and downstrokes). Go back and watch his left hand, fingering each note of the arpeggio in quick (very) succession. The rest of this vid from 1.39 is flawless shred.. Andy and I have played this song together and he is right on the button everytime!

While you're at it have a look at the rest of the vids, as they are littered with bass friendly techniques ;o)

  14. I can't remember the name of the S/ware I'm afraid.. but I found it on one of the PPC software websites as a free download.

Ah yes, HTC.. My orbit is actually a rebadged HTC Artemis. My previos PDA ..and well.. most of the 'provider branded' PDA's are all HTC too.. T-Mobile MDA. Orange Mxxxx, QTEK, Dopod.. all the same hardware.

As for the USB host thing, Yes I am not aware of any PDA's that offer this functionality yet. Its a hardware thing, not software. You have probably found that th recording quality of the onboard mic is pretty cruddy!

  15.
hi Chris it already has a three band eq with an 18v system but the pickups are passive. So will alrady have a preamp? but a preamp upgrade would be nice too if it doesnt have one. Sorry electrics confuse me. I really like the bass and its not easy to find a 6 string left handed so i think my best bet is to upgrade this one.

Yes, sounds like you already have a preamp and active electrics. That's the extent of my knowledge!! I switched to Bartolini 20 years ago, because I liked the bass but didn't like the sound, and i love them but i suppose there are many more "modern" sounding pickups these days. John Shuker should know about the best combinations. Good luck.
I concurr with what has been said already.. The EMG HZ's are indeed passive and you have an active preamp on board. A lot of pickup choiecs will be down to taste as *most * pups are suitable for *most* preamps. Its just a case of reading up about the different sorts before you plump on a particular choice. An example of this would be that some manufacturers have preamps that are suitable for active pickups and seperate ones for passive pickups. Also, *some* pickups have a very high output and can actually provide too much drive into some preamps! Of course, on the flipside there's probably pups that are too weak for some preamps too.. I guess.

TalkBass have a good section on their forum discussing all things pickup-wise.

Jon Shuker's fave at the moment is his own preamp (which I hear from reviews is excellent - I'm gonna have one!!!) and Delano soapbars.

As for preamps, you have the options of the almost famous Aguilar OPB-3.. Our very own Mr East an affiliate on this very forum, EMG of course.. Bartolini, Seymour Duncan and many others.

  16.
Interesting points here and if all we cared about was whether the audience liked the sound there would be no excuse for GAS :)

One of the things that made me change my rig was when some mates from an old band could not hear a difference in sound between an Ibanez Musician Fretless and a Bass Collection. I wanted to hear my fretless sing so I got an amp that would let it sing. f*** the audience.
That would be the EBS right? One thing I noticed about the 650 I tried out is how clear and.. 'touch sensitive' it felt. Bizarrely, as much as I love my SVP preamp.. it is 'lazy' in comparison. Valves Vs Solidstate, maybe?

  17.
The preamp is what you'd use to change (EQ) your sound, the poweramp should just make that signal louder. So in theory it shouldn't matter a toss what poweramp you use. In practise though.. I've no idea :).
I'm certainly no authority on the whole power amp thing, but in my stupidity and learning the hard way I have had the opportunity to try out a few power amps with my gear.

I have noticed differences between the sound of one poweramp to another.. I'm not going to suggest a whole 'which is better' discussion in terms of sound quality.. I could be comparing the equivalent of an SVT with an EBS for example. In a blind A/B I suspect I probably wouldnt be able to pick my own amp out of a selection.

One thing that I *have* noticed though.. and I can't even explain what it is between poweramps in my set up is I think what I would call 'immediancy'.. nah actually even that doesn't really explain it! Some poweramps I have tried seem like they are limiting or compressing 'holding back'?? um.. like someone is holding the speaker cone back... Does that actually make any sense? One or two that I have tried almost have the opposite effect in comparison. Notes seem to ping out.. I know! I'll call it 'touch sensitivity'!!! Quieter notes seem louder, again in comparison.

Now, what ever makes an amp do that, either engineered or otherwise.. I like it!

    * excuse the nonsensical rambling.. I have a head full of snot and I can't concentrate! lol
