1. just a silly one that helped me out.. When I count along with those 'odd' time sigs I sometimes get muddled, especially when the music is at a fast tempo. So, instead of saying the word 'seven' (which has 2 syllables and, a rhythm of its own - ok.. maybe its just me who gets confuzzed!) I just say 'sev'

    one-two-three-four-five-six-sev-one etc...

ermm, does that actually make sense?

  2.
By "those lovely techniques" are you referring to tapping?! For those, such as yourself, who have mastered the art so that it sounds the dogs whatsits (love your bass BTW, so cool it's almost arctic!), it's great, but TBPH I have no inclincation to learn it and no opportunity to use it if I was to learn it. The chords are the only bit I really have the chance to play with, so I guess I'm asking whether it's worth keeping a 6'er just for that?
Thank U ;o) very kind sir! Well, I wasn't just refering to tapping alone, but it is just one. I like using the high strings for pecussive and strumming techniques as well. Hell! I have even played rhythm guitar parts all the way through a song to give it a bit more energy. I think chords are a great technique on bass, as you can really dig deep! Especially if you can get an open low string in there too!

Another style you could look at is maybe arpeggiating chords? From a guitar point of view, an excellent example would be Andy Summers' playing in the Police. "Every Breath You Take" or "Message In A Bottle" show how chords such as 9ths and other extensions can be split into pleasing riffs and turn arounds. Something to try on the bass too?

mmmm you got me thinking now! I'm off to play!!!!

  3.
Dood, that is one seriously nice bass! And I don't normally like single cuts.
Thank you so much! I love it to bits! The second one is going to be..ehem.. eye catching, to say the least ;o)
dood - you the man!

I will call john shuker and have a chat re this.....

Yes, do! He's a damn good chap. Don't feel let down though if you have a few probs getting through on the phone.. he's the only person in the workshop at the mo.. and no doubt working a noisey machine! ;o)

  4.
any links to some good sites explaining and demonstrating the various amounts of chords? im new to the 6 string thing too
http://www.guitar-and-bass.com/ I like Dave's site. Very helpful and some great tools available for use.

  5. Definitely stick with it! As it happens, I really love prog, which seems to lend itself to all those lovely techniques you mention. However, I used to play in a female fronted acoustic/rock band and used tapping / chords and the extended range to play 'acoustic guitar' or piano like parts to fill out the sound. On a few songs I tried to make the bass less 'bass-like', using more of a pecussive, even harpsicord type tone (using additional effects). Big swooshy stereo echos and reverbs sound awesome up the scale, in the same way as they do on our thin stringed cousins.

I also love being able to harmonise with another soloing instrument. Even just a bar or 2 sounds great, for example, whilst Mr guitar slinger is doing his best Brian May impression, find a phrase that stands out in his solo and work out a harmony for it. Brings a solo to life when you play it live, as you can get right up into the same range (give or take..)

you know that there is an attached stigma in using signature basses,
lol Damn that Dan Veall bloke! lol
do you think john shuker would build a yamaha attitude type bass to my spec?
yes yes yes yes and in case that didnt come across clearly.. YES! ;o)

  7.
Dood - I'm not quite sure what you mean? Is it like a cut away on the tail end of the bass where your right arm would sit or something? My mate Andy has the 6 string version, I could just go and find out what you mean from looking at it, but I'm feeling a little lazy at the moment! :) I'll probably keep that kind of countouring to a minimum though, and just have it 'nicely curvy'. I would be tempted by the 'belly contour' or whatever it is on the Conklin I have, but I don't think it'll work with the madrone top being attached to the back.
Yeh, you pretty much got it there.. it's quite a deep scoop on the forearm rest. Rather comfy. I'm tempted to take the idea onto my next Shuker.

  8.
They are very playable and hang differently than P's and J's. I love playing my Ray but don't always like the tone. A P-Ray would be a great new axe.

    Cheers,
I always thought a PJ-Ray or even a stu hamm style JPJ-Ray would be a rather cool instrument. Or go the whole hog and have the MM pup AND the P pup. Now there's some tones I'd like to hear!

On a side note.. I really love those #all black' OLP MM's. Black hardware, black paint job, matching headstock and the pearly pick guard. Just looks 'right' ;o)

  9.
I don't think I've ever seen your seven string dood. Any pics?
LOL! You are one of the few that hasn't! ;o) - I like to take the *odd* opportunity to tell the good bass playing folk about my 'doodle'.
Shuker J.J. Burnel-surprise, eh?

    http://www.shukerguitars.co.uk/jjburnel.htm

The JJ Burnell... I've read the specs and stuff, but all in all its just a P Bass really isn't it? Please correct my if I'm wrong, but doesn't that cost a hell of a lot more than going out and buying a Fender P bass for pretty much the same?
But on the other hand, it is a cool bass. JJ Burnell is an excellent bass player, too. I love the sound he has on Peaches.

True, but then again aren't a lot of signature models existing designs tweaked by the manufacturer to a particular artist's specifications, then marketed to the general public? I would hope that the Shuker version would be a darn sight better put together than your average Fender, even the USA ones, and I like the sound of the louder than usual overwound pickup. Most unlikely that I'll ever be buying one, but if I had a few spare quid...
The Shuker JJ is indeed essentially a Fender, in that JJ specifically asked Jon to take all the best parts of 2 of his favourite basses and create a new bass based on those. However, an off the rack Fender and an 'off the rack' Shuker are 2 different beasts! (You only have to see the build threads to get an idea where I am coming from)

  10. Ah! A subject close to my heart!! All of what John said above is pretty spot on. I ended up travelling up and down the country to find cabs that had the least amount of colour and had the guts to produce a good clean sound.

Its interesting as what I ended up with has a 'hifi tone' but I suspect isn't 'flat response'. As I have mentioned elsewhere.. 2 rather different response curves.

I *think* BFM and other similar designs could be the way to go.. OR you are looking at lugging more gear around. Hmmm.. I'd like to see a company doing active bass cabs that are of a PA design. Internally bi/tri amped with preset poweramps internally So that the optimum response is provided from the cabinets.

    I like that idea!

  11.
Duff mckagan's black fender precision special
fender need to hurry up at make an artist series of them!!!
I have an original 1989 model in red ;o) .. it does 'that sound' so well ;o)

[edit] Its actually called a Fender Jazz Bass Special. The Active version was known as the Power Jazz Bass Special and features some upgrades, like a graphite reinforced tri-lam neck and 22 frets (and an active pre).

  12. Yamaha P5000 or P7000 from SoundsLive mate. For a really flexible amp with more connections and functions, you can't go wrong. They are only 12Kg too, which makes them a very light non D-Class.

I highly recommend the crossover on it as you can filter out everything below what your cabinet cant produce.. thus giving you far more volume and less speaker 'farting'.

I'd still have mine if powersoft hadn't landed on my GAS-o-meter!!

  13. Well all my old skoolers have been mentioned.. so, for the new boys.. Dan Foord and James Leach. Cos James has been mentioned on here recently.

    No valves tho'.

  15. Yeah, Justin and Mikey have left, but this is a rebook of one of their previous gigs that got cancelled. They have "demo'd" a new singer, so I guess its a case of 'watch this space'. I think there is also one other gig on the 12th?? with Justin and Mikey and thats pretty much it for the current line up. Having talked to Pin on the phone recently, it sounds like the new stuff will be right up my street!
