  1. Ironically looking around now at my guitars and basses, the average fret number on the basses is higher than the guitars. Most of my basses are 24 fret, most of the guitars are 22!
  2. Not sure about that, especially gibsons you get a lot that are very worn, and what proportion of gibsons from the 60s have their necks unbroken?! Most goldtops from the 50s/60s are woodtops and it seems that a lot of EB basses from the 60s and 70s are not only worn but have holes for other pickups, bridge replacements, various holes. In fact I think the SG shape in particular is designed to look tatty. Its just they don't come like that unlike fenders.
  3. Gibson do a few relics but only on stupidly expensive custom shop. I doubt you would get a thunderbird though, gibson don't even bother making those every years, let alone coming out with a new finish. I suppose they don't really care about basses anyway. Surprised that G&L don't though, they come out with every finish going.
  4. Probably the sensible decision, it is what I would like to think I would go for. I played a set of taurus 3 and they were fun but once you get over the "OMG I am playing a moog Taurus" they weren't actually that special! I have the 12 step and often think a set of PK pedals would be good, but it is another thing to shlep around.
  5. I will be listening. Want to know it is worth the extra!
  6. Did an outdoor gig last year just outside a local clubhouse, it started at 2 and it was into the low mid 30s (probably not at the temp you were saying about yet). We had table umbrellas to hide under because it was so hot. The PA went to massive fan mode just after switch on, and the case was too hot to touch, so we made a fort of cases around to shield from direct sunlight, as well as the mixer. They both had their fans flat out sounding like an aircraft everything was flat out. My voicelive on my pedalboard died from the heat. PA survived. I barely did, I hate heat!
  7. Yep just eurosendered a bass to up north, booked on sunday, picked up on tuesday, bass with recipient on wednesday, all happy and the discount has gone back up to 10%
  8. Well, its just like spam, it washes over you after a while and you won't even notice it, like brief look, delete, move onto the next one.
  9. Fair enough, they are heavy things.
  10. Seems on the high side, but obviously there aren't many around so if you really want a moog taurus 3, you don't have much choice. If you want the sounds you obviously have a lot more choices a lot cheaper.
  11. 30mm - there are 3 gaps with 4 strings.
  12. Indeed, and I was referring to distortion in amplifiers not in specific bass amplifiers, as a clarification on classes. There are many hifi amps run as Class A to a reasonable power, and many small class A guitar amps, certainly in the 5W group, such as the small fenders. I have played a 5w bass amp (made by a friend). Personally I think 5w is the perfect size for a guitar amp, the bass amp was too underpowered to work well though. I note there are many people on this thread (and the valve amp thread) that seem to rate low powered valve amps, I suspect they are A/B like the smaller ashdown. Yes thanks, but cheers for asking. I didn't notice anyone on here had suggested using a class C amplifier for bass. Maybe for radio!
  13. The eurosender terms explicitly cover musical instruments. There was also another one someone mentioned - overland or something, they had a specific musical instrument clause.
  14. I am not sure of any specific bass class a amp, and both class a amps I have here are fairly low power. I am fully aware what the class of amps is thanks, I was clarifying a confusion above that class a/b has anything to do with being a transistor amp vs a valve amp. The class a amp I have is a hifi amp, and I have a small guitar one too (that I haven't used for a long time) Of course it wouldn't surprise me? but in the context of bass amps that we are talking about and specifically the tc rh amps, one of their weaknesses was considered their power supply.
  15. I would have thought having a helix makes it much easier to play in a covers band. Not saying whether you want to or not, but helixes are pretty common in covers.
  16. Valve what? Class A/B what? I mean a class A/B mosfet is going to be very similar to an all valve (apart from maybe one with a valve power supply regulation too, which is less common). A class A amplifier is going to always sound better than a class B or a class A/B regardless of power delivery. A class A mosfet will clearly sound better than a class B valve and when you are overdriving they will both sound better than a transistor (regardless of class). When you are not overdriving they are basically down to the power supply. Often class D (which is very different) is going to fail because of a lack of power supply. So a class D with a big power supply (of the sort of the sort of power of any class A) will probably be very good, but you don't get them really in small heads (as its kind of not really the point).
  17. Ah, suppose I am better off in the way I didn't get to start again!
  18. So you are left without part of a pa, or someone that comes in to replace that person has to buy that bit of the PA? I don't trust people in the group I am in to turn up with a strap for their guitar half the time, let alone part of the PA!
  19. Yep, that is where we are. One in every 10 or so gigs that we do is on a truck or in a place that has a PA, the rest of the time it is my PA. The PA does the vocals / sax and a bit of the other instruments. My bass goes through my amp, the guitar goes through its amp (and I have tried to put it through in ears but he doesn't get on with them the one time he tried). We don't currently have any monitors because the singers one died, I use in ears, as does the drummer, so I am not buying one, and no-one else has bothered to buy one so obviously they don't care either. I was going to buy a sub before lockdown, but obviously we haven't played since march so I haven't (and I didn't have a way of transporting it, or storing it). Singer wears an in ear on one ear sometimes, but he is an 'in audience' guy so he needs the interaction.
  20. Indeed, but that is just terms. You can't use the pickups without power, so the pickup assembly is active. The board in the picture is just a set of plugs to get power to the required pickups and the output to the plug, so the loom itself is passive. Advantage of that is you can use very small windings or small magnets which would normally produce too low an output as it is being buffered at source.
  21. None of our bands have been able to practice since march, what is different then?
  22. Depends if the tubes are working as class a or class b. Tricky to do a class d valve, but not impossible
  23. Many low voltage effects pedals that use a tube use it in cold cathode format which means there is no glow from the valve. As any fool knows, the sound of a valve that doesn't have an orange glow is nowhere near as nice as the sound of a valve that has an orange glow, so they tend to put an orange LED underneath it to make the sound right
  24. I am a fan of them, have them on one of my basses. A bit more expensive though Bass goes boom!
  25. I think these things are more noticable now seeing as youtube (after spending years saying they would never charge) have come up with a premium service, and they need to persuade people to use it, I guess the easiest way is to just fosters them off enough with the free one.
