Ok - not sure it really is for me then? The demo sounds on the website make it sound really squelchy - not a fair reflection then?
I've got one, I love it but It doesn't really do full on squelch, it's kind of like a wetter discumbobulator, it gets quite wet, but it's still very transparent, every setting on it is useable, I don't have to worry about blowing speakers or clipping amps, the effects loop is very handy if you plan on running it with a fuzz (or you can set it up so the envelope is triggered by an external source, the kick drum mic or a sampler or whatever)
Just checked out the 3Leaf Groove Regulator and it sounds/looks fantastic - anyone got one that could give an honest appraisal of it?
There are three more compact clones of the Meatball on the market now, with a variety of prices and features, but all would have to be ordered from the USA unless you see one for sale used, so you'd be adding import duty, VAT and a handling fee to these prices: 3Leaf Groove Regulator - No expression input, lacking a lot of the controls from the original Meatball but apparently it works very well on bass. - $230 Robot Factory Meatwad - Almost all the controls from the original, + expression input, in a SansAmp-sized box. - $350 Barge Concepts Grinder - Looks closest to the original, larger and more expensive than the other two. - $410 I've got the Meatwad, it's a top filter. Mine's got a couple of extra sneaky features so it's got more switches, I feel like a scientist when I'm operating it.
As a self confessed addict to squelchy filter pedals I would advise the following for you: Chunk Systems Agent 00 Funk Mark II - brilliant pedal and really great funky filter sound. You can hear it on one my my bands tracks in the intro. Go to www.myspace.com/zangtangband and listen to the first 30 seconds of The House of Zang. If you add it to the Chunk Systems Brown Dog which is a fuzz pedal you can get some awesome synth type sounds and if you carry on listening to The House of Zang you can hear these in the keys break down in the middle. Subdecay Prometheus - Another really good filter pedal and apparently pretty close to an original Mu-Tron. Can get a vast array of sounds from it not just funky squelch! EBS Bass IQ - pretty quacky in the up mode but great in the down mode for a synth type thud! Maxon AF9 - never got on with this. Sounded great at home but lost all the bottom end live. Dod FX25B - sh*te - IMO!!! Musitronics Mu-Tron III - The daddy apparently but never had the pleasure of trying one yet - very expensive to buy, bloody big and heavy and a swine to fit on a pedalboard appear to be the main problems with it. Haz Labs - Mu-Tron III - Didn't like it at all. EHX Q-Tron - Nice at home but no balls or bottom end live. Lovetone Meatball - sounded great when Nick Fyffe used it with Jamiroquai but big, heavy and very expensive. Hope this helps a little. Mark
Hi all I'm sure everyone's pretty bored of this subject, but I'm gonna go ahead and ignore that for my own selfish gain. I'm looking for a low pass/envelope filter type thing. You know. Ideally something that comes close to the Mutron, but I'm willing to try most things. If it can do greasy, slippery squelch then I'm interested. I've been looking at a few of them... a friend of mine uses what I believe is the Moog MF-101 and it's ace. So that's on the shortlist. I'm also interested in the MXR M-188 (auto Q), maybe the DiscomBOBulator (although from the sound samples I've heard it seems to be lacking some grit - can anyone confirm/dispute this?)... at a push I'd also try the Maxon AF-9 and the DOD FX25. I apologise - I've realised that's not really a shortlist. But anyway, can I please have some advice on this? Key things to remember: Squelch. Dirt. Funk. Greasier than a dodgy 3am takeaway pizza. Obviously I would like to try some of these before actually making my mind up, but some nudges in the right sort of direction would be much appreciated! Huw P.S. I realise I've completely neglected to mention anything Electro-Harmonix, which is intentional. I'd just like to try something different, as I know what to expect with those pedals.
F1 or GS112?
Oo good, I'm waiting for mine to be delivered as we speak!
I was interested to see that you have both and Aguilar amp and cab and also Markbass amps too. How do you find the Aguilar cab and Mark Bass head combo? I was reading recently that a Markbass F1 head into a GS112 is the business. I am sure you have A/B'd so interested to hear your thoughts?
Nice DB212 mate! i have a DB210 its fantastic! really portable and surprisingly loud for such a small cab. i'd love to get another one or maybe a DB115...... Best online retailer for strings
Gunsfreddy2003 replied to Gunsfreddy2003's topic in Accessories and Misc
Cheers Guys. On this occasions Stringbusters were cheapest for the Elixirs that I wanted. Mark
yup, another strings direct fan here
-
Evening all! Looking to buy two sets of coated strings this week, probably Elixir or Ernie Ball. Can someone advise who has the best prices online and offers quick delivery? I have used Stringbusters before but just wanted to sense check if anyone else is better? Cheers Mark

Fantastic - don't bother using my rack tuner at all anymore!
So whats the opinion on this pedal for anyone who has one? Going to go try it out next weekend
What head are you using with the GS112's?
I added a second and am now able to sell my SWR cabs. Maybe the SWR 2x10 has more hi mid bias but this doesn't endorse plug in and play and although the sound can be great the two cabs don't fit in my car as well as 2 GS's do. Very easy on the ear sound last night with 2 GS112's, a perfect underpinning of the band as they don't lack bass at all. Lovely funky little cabs IMV. So stage 1 in my plan is complete..they have replaced my present incumbents.. :lol
That did cross my mind as I work in sales!!! Also the OP on this thread stated how good the F1 sounds with a GS112 cab. It does look like I would be wide to purchase a 2nd GS112 though as two together seems to be favoured by nearly everyone! Mark
Being cynical, is that because Mark doesn't sell Aguilar but does sell Berg ? Have a look on Talkbass, there's a guy there called KJung who's really knowledgeable. He's tried pretty much every amp/cab combination that you can imagine. I've read loads of times that GS12's match really well with the F1 head.
Seems like the most sensible option Martin. Will do just that and see how I get on.
I can confirm that 2 x 1 x 12 bergs work really well with the F1, but don't know the aggies. Mark is usually spot on with his advice, but it's always worth taking your cabs to try with an F1 at his shop. Cheers Martin
Please see the link below: http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=...biggest+blister As the proud owner of that one I would agree to try not to pop it if possible as it takes much longer to heal and really hurts if you do try to play on it. Agree with the comment that you need to look at technique - if you crank up your backline more then you don't have to play quite so hard to hear yourself and that should help. Mark
The liquid is there as a protective cushion against further damage from too much pressure. If I have had to, I have used a bit of gaffer tape to stop the blister from bursting and to add a bit of protection. Depending on which finger has the blister, it may be possible to work in another finger instead! Sometimes why a three finger technique is useful. I don't wanna teach to suck eggs or anything, but of course, if big blisters are re-occuring it might be worth looking at technique to prevent it happening in the future. Blisters are caused by playing too hard (obviously) and sweaty/wet fingers. Keep 'em dry and you'll suffer less! Also, as has been said already - any methods for toughening up the finger tip skin will be useful too, such as rubbing in Surgical Spirit.
Not keen on changing cabs at all really to be honest as I like both of them!! Also not sure on the sense of having to carry to separate cabs to a gig if the idea of a lightweight head is to reduce the load of gear going out to each gig?
TWO GS112s would be really really nice. One would be fine for quiter gigs. Depends on what you want to spend really.
-
Guys, Had a good chat with Mark at Bass Direct today ref an F1 head and he really believes that a GS112 by itself will not work well with an F1 head. Apparently 2 x Bergantino 1x12's would work much better. Anyone have any thoughts on this?
-
How do you find it through the 2x10? How high up do you have to crank up the volume for gigs/full rehearsals?
I run my F1 through a 2x10 cabinet. I will eventually get a 15 to add / complete the set up.
-
Or running the 2x10 and 1x12 for the same effect?!!
Can't see a single 12 doing it at anything but low volumes...and that is pretty much hamstringing the amp, IMO..and pushing the cab alot.. Whereas, 2x1x12.... that is another story. A very portable and big sounding mini rig...although nothing mini about the sound, IMV.
Which pro players in this genre use them?
This is the very style that they excel
-
That is what I feared - GAS attack coming on!!! Subjective question this but do you think that running at 4ohms it would be a more poweful/louder amp than the AG500?
I think where it really shines through is with funky fingerstyle, aggressive pick playing and a good old bit of slap. The sound is so percussive from the head. If a detailed, bright, snappy and controlled sound is your thing, then I don't think there is much not to like about the F1.
-
What are they like for funk sounds? I play a lot of fingerstyle and slap and wonder how the F1 or F500 would cope with this? I don't like Mark Bass cabs - too wooly and not enough definition for me but I did hear some MB heads through various cabs at Bass Direct a while ago and have to say that I was pretty impressed! Enough to consider changing from my Aggie AG500SC. Nothing wrong with this head but I just think it runs out of steam a bit when working the GS112. Now I could take both the Epi and Aggie cabs out and it would probably be fine but I do like the size of the 112 and when you are going through a PA there is no need for a huge backline anyway. The size and weight of the MB heads is very appealing right now - could walk to a gig with all my gear in two hands easily.
Yes, it can do deep, dub, middley old skool tones and motown with those lovely controls, as well as ultra flat & hifi - but don't expect it to do 'dirty' - as it is a very clean amp. That said - drop an M80 pedal or similar in front of it and it will rattle ya jaw bone
Yeah it's a great combination for a synthy type bass sound!! Still not sure if I really "need" a mutron III though!
Nice board dude! I see you like your filters I used to have the Brown Dog/00Funk combo, that was awesome!
