  1. Can’t say for sure as I’ve never done a direct comparison in the same bass. But lots of folk hear a difference, some prefer one, some the other. I think the original SK’s had an additional resistor in the wiring. Would need an electronics savvy BC’s to chat about the difference in proper terms.
  2. I’m out... bought back my old my old Lull PJ4 today. Couldn’t be happier - it was worth it
  3. Damn, another of my lovely ex basses comes up for grabs... This one is a killer IMO. I’m not into white basses, but this was so good that I had to have it, and only regretfully sold it when I got my HH Special. GLWTS
  4. Depends on your price range, and do you want it vintage correct? Assuming you want a SK Jazz that’s got the period correct kind of vibe then Limelight would do a well priced relic. Or Bravewood for a more expensive one. Im sure other BC’ers here will have good recommendations too.
  5. For me, typically with a £3-4k Fender CS (or similar, such as the Martin CS acoustic guitars that I’ve played recently) they aren’t twice as better as they are twice the price. But that’s not really the point for the many folk who own them and don’t mind the premium cost. I’ve had a fair few CS Fender basses - when they are good they are excellent, when poor they are pretty average, so worth waiting for an excellent one IMO - if you want the Fender affiliation. Otherwise there’s other makers out there who do a fine job, just in a different flavour.
  6. Set of 45-100 Cobalt flats that were briefly on a Stingray a couple of times. They have been strung through body. Price includes 1st class regular post.
  7. Set of 45-100 Chromes that were briefly on a Stingray a couple of times. They have been strung through body. Price includes 1st class regular post.
  8. For me, the 57RI is usually a P that has more top end naturally, more so as opposed to a rosewood 62RI. Plus the Phil Jones is quite hifi so I suppose it shows it up more. I’d put some LaBella flats on, check it’s got a decent capacitor & pot and slightly back off the tone pot if need be. Perhaps also check the pickup isn’t too high and the neck too straight?
  9. Oh dear... my wife is not happy about that. But I may well be... Any chance you’re passing through North London soon?
  10. Oops, duplicate post (below)
  11. So sad 😞 I went to his workshop a few years back, he was a perfect host and clearly a warm and genuine guy. Just for fun, Mike was excitedly asking me to try an original 57 P Bass he was working on, which I did, but I was more excited about playing his own P Bass and the beauties hanging on the wall. I owned a few of Mike’s basses, there’s one I really shouldn’t have let go of in hindsight as I sold it for a more expensive vintage bass I couldn’t really afford, @Andy has her now RIP Mike
  12. I think it may be just my imagination, but I find the maple boards seem slimmer (front to back) than the rosewood. Not sure if it’s because of the generous slab of rosewood, as opposed to a one piece maple neck/board, perhaps that slab just messes with my perception. My previous 2015 rosewood was a nice neck, but my 2018 Special with maple seems far more comfy to me.
  13. Played this bass a few times, for my taste it’s one of the great ones and looks the muts nuts.. Andy is a great guy, GLWTS pal. .
  14. Absolutely - mine is a long list! As with many 70’s Sabres, the neck had a twist, and it wasn’t as comfy as my Ray, but when I hear it on old recordings I made, it stays on the mind sometimes. I sold it to fund a 64 Jazz which then funded a deposit for my flat - out of the two I’d actually have the Sabre back.
  15. As the title says, this is along shot wondering if the guy is on BC, or has even seen this post! Sometime around 2005/6 whilst I was working in Regent Sounds, Denmark St, there was a nice fella (Steve or Kev, or maybe not?) who was a regular customer that used to come in for a chat and hang out. I remember he played a lot of slap. I had just bought some old Fenders and sold him my late 70’s Music Man Sabre which was brown and beat up, and also a refinished and done up 1971 Musicmaster Bass. Selling both wasn’t wise really, as you do, but the Sabre is still missed. Are you around pal? Would love to get in touch again to see if you still have them, or find out where the Sabre is.
  16. Holy shite, hope they didn’t sand the original finish off just for a blooming video....that’d be just so 80’s and “it’s only old tosh”...
  17. Just seen the new MM 2020 offerings. http://blog.music-man.com/news/ernie-ball-music-man-new-for-2020/ Some nice new colours for the Special, and a couple of short scale Rays in Starry Night & Vintage Sunburst, both with roasted necks.
  18. Very hard to find indeed, I’ve only played a couple of light ones in a huge bunch over the years. Personally speaking, the genuine best thing I did in 27 years is invest in a MM Special HH. Since Sept 2018 I haven’t bought a bass (huge for me) and have sold all my other basses, my HH covers everything I need. Though I miss having a P Bass in one way, I don’t miss it when my Ray dials in a tone that covers that territory. Plus I get a kick out of just going to one bass, but that’s personal. The Specials are commonly light weight and the tone and amazingly versatile preamp, for me, stops the 2 band v 3 band debate. Just sayin’
  19. ‘Think’? Don”t let me down buddy... the fact that you’re not selling it, and that I’m currently happy with just my Ray has absolutely nothing to do with it 🤣
  20. To the tune of John Lennon... “she’s just a jealous Si”
  21. Very cool bass pal, great score. Would love see some pics if you gig it in all it’s glory. I suppose you won’t want that horribly light and ordinary looking Wal Mk3 anymore then...? 🤞
  22. I’m in Only went out last year as I downsized my pedals for a Helix Stomp and cashed in - the irony.
  23. Love it 👍
