1.
Yes, ladies and gentlemen, I'm one of Miles Davis' closest friends!
Maybe not so much these days ! I'm pretty sure you should be allowed "Miles Davis band" on your CV though, although by that token I should have "Hot Chocolate" on mine ;-)
2. Myself and Pineweasel (the lefties from last year) will try to be there, if we can.
3. Not sure if this counts because it wasn't me, but I was in a queue outside the Forum in Kentish Town a long time ago, waiting to see Tower of Power, and the guy in front of me is going on to his mate about how amazing Rocco Prestia is, and how he is the greatest bass player that ever lived etc. Rocco walks out of the stage door, right past our section of the queue (I think I grinned like a lunatic at him), crossed the road to the shop and came back with a pack of fags, walking right by us again and going back into the stage door. The guy in front was still going on to his mate about Rocco, oblivious to the fact that he'd just been within 2 feet of him.
4. Looks quite a lot like Pino at 02:08 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AV0ugZumyJU ..but don't blink
5. Phew, this was a while back ! Glad to hear there are some more Ergos making their way over here. I have to admit I chickened out and bought an NS NXT 5 in the end.
6.
Thanks - could be the perfect partner for the F2B....I'd given up looking...
Just in case you are not tempted by the TC, I used a Chevin A500 with my F1X for quite a while, worked really well together, and both fitted in a 3U shallow SKB rack (with breathing space in the middle ;-) ) Liked it so much I now have 2 A500s GLWS
7. Saw a covers band do "Just what I needed" by The Cars a couple of weeks ago, not heard anyone play that before. They did a great version too.
8. I bought a set of hipshot ultralights online from Guitar Center in the US, they had a special on sets, I think they were about £40, so still cheaper than here even after the duty/VAT etc. I've not tried Gotohs on a bass though, always been happy with Hipshots.
9. I just go up chromatically from my lowest node, going back to any that seem to "boom" in the venue. If you don't catch them at this point, there is little chance of them being sorted out once the whole band is playing. The trick in the previous post is what all guitarists do at every soundcheck ;-)
10. Excellent blog, and great to see that more than 1 in 10 of the photos involves a lefty bass ;-)
11. And nice to hear that Farm Factory studios is still owned and run by a bass player !
12. What a great event, with such a friendly bunch of people ! My first 'bash' and it far exceeded my expectations. Many thanks to all those involved for all their hard work, see you again at next years bash, if not before. Edwin.
13. I'm in. I can bring some lefty basses, Iceni 5-string custom, Fender MIJ 62 re-issue jazz, Yamaha BB fretless and amp, GB Streamliner 900, and Tech soundsystems (now TecAmp) cabs ?
14. I've got the "MagnaCart" which I got off a guitarist about 3 years ago, still works fine, goes over pretty much anything if you are sensible (struggles on muddy grass) I can take both my cabs at the same time on it, and I can't lift them both at the same time as they are too heavy! For £15 you can't go wrong.
15. Why isn't this at the top of the list ? Come on, these are amazing cabs !
16. Played through these last weekend, they sound lovely and are in great condition. Steve is also a thoroughly nice chap !
17. Thanks for the info. I've also seen a modification on youtube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Brt_gMtS2nE which looks like he's mounted an electric bass bridge on the back, so a few extra inches of the strings are anchored before passing through the body. - Edwin.
18. Thanks for sharing your experience of buying an Ergo, I've also found Jesse very friendly and helpful. Bristol is probably a bit far for me at the moment, but your positive experience is pushing me closer to buying ! Anyone else ? - Edwin.
19. I'm tempted to order an Ergo 5-string from the US. The portability and sound appeal to me, and the availability of left hand models should aid my transition from electric bass without taxing my feeble brain. However, I can't bring myself to do it without having actually tried one out ! Does anyone have an Ergo EUB (any string configuration/orientation) anywhere near Hertfordshire that they would be prepared for me to have a quick go on ? Thanks, Edwin.
20. Is this the rig you had at the Two rivers festival in 2008 ? We were on the same bill that night, and I remember asking the monitor engineer what he thought of it, he was mightily impressed.
21. Darn, got here too late. Love Chevin, best sounding power amp there is !
22.
Thanks for the info guys..... Has anyone had a good experience of the Fly ?
... Steve Swallow ?
23. I started out playing reggae, still do every now and then when the chance arises, and you're right, it's all about restraint ! It's great to play though, I can't think of any other music where the bass is *SO* important. You can't have reggae without bass ! Check out anything on the Trojan label. Also anything with Aston Barrett, Flabba Holt, or Sly and Robbie playing on it, and, even though they were a bit commercial Third World (stick to their material from the 70's) also had some great basslines. - el-gnomo.
