1. Aaaaagh WD40 !! Actually the main problem I have with it's use on guitars is..... it's a spray, and in a previous life as a sound engineer I found all guitarist's who use it also have electric fans behind them, thereby ensuring they blow it in the eyes of the first 5 rows, monitor engineer, etc.... every few songs !!!! I don't know what's in it, but it stings !!
2. I own a '70s Fender Bassman 100 head and huge 4x12 "pyramid" cab, stencilled with "DR FEELGOOD". I bought it of a mate, who bought it of someone we both know, and he bought it of the road manager of Dr. Feelgood..... so it would seem genuine ! Exact same model (exact same amp ?) is used by them on their Old grey whistle test performance on the DVD boxed set. - 'el gnomo'

5. Worked my way through this thread and everyone that popped into my head seemed to then get mentioned a few posts later ! Got a few more though: Bob Babbitt - Motown's number 2 to James Jamerson, everyone assumes all the big hits were Jamerson, not true http://www.bobbabbitt.com/disc.htm Max Bennett - Session player extraordinaire, from Ella Fitzgerald to the Monkees and Zappa ! http://www.united-mutations.com/b/max_bennett.htm Richard Searle - Corduroy Great bass player, really different lines, now with Mother Earth, I believe.
6. I once had a busking rig that consisted of an EQ footpedal (9v battery) into a car stereo amp, which was powered by a car battery, and the output of that went into a small 1x12" cab. It sounded great, and I'm tempted to do it again, maybe with a quad bike battery or something that's smaller and easier to cart around (i.e. fully sealed) .......can't guarantee any of this was safe though !!!!! el-gnomo
7.
I'll steer clear of the obvious Level 42 stuff as mentioned above. I might as well say my entire Level 42 collection. But a few albums I like, as the slapping is a little different in each case: "J K Special" featuring Jorg (J.K.) Kleutgens on bass and Dave Weckl on drums "On The Corner" by John Patitucci "The Sun Don't Lie" by Marcus Miller "Le Band" by Alain Caron
Haven't got the JK album, but the other 3 get a +1 from me ! Also "My radio sure sounds good to me" by Larry Graham and Graham Central Station, starts with a track called POW, and it hits you right between the eyes with monster slap !!!
8. .. Closest I've got to a compliment like that was when my wife got herself a spot playing bass for 1 tune with a friends band (bearing in mind she had never played before), after me trying to teach her "heatwave" for 5 minutes, I got "it's not as easy as it looks is it !"
9. Phil Lynott.... and he sang, and wrote too !!
10. I regularly rehearse with a 10 piece latin band at the singer's house, we haven't had a complaint yet ! alexclaber is spot on, you learn a lot about control, dynamics, and relative volumes within the band, and doing this will certainly help the sound man. It also saves my ears ! Gig's do enough damage, I don't think rehearsals need to be doing the same.
11. In my experience bass through the monitors sounds sh*t ! I like to hear a nice bass sound on stage, it makes me play better ....!? Plus some smaller gigs we play we don't take the subs for the PA, and the bass doesn't go into the desk at all, so I always take backline. ...on the other hand, no loading/unloading, no lifting heavy cabs.......... hmmm
12.
Welcome from a fellow newbie. You have some nice gear there!
Thanks ! I only mentioned the good stuff !!!!!

Hello !

Hi, I've been looking around the forum for a while, but have finally got round to signing up ! So I'd better introduce myself. I've had a bass for 24 years, and have played in bands for 17 of them. I've played most types of music, in most kinds of venue ! The bassists I admire include: Bruce Thomas from the attractions, James Jamerson/Bob Babbitt, Paul Jackson, Pino Palladino, Jaco, Stanley Clarke (especially on upright), and many more...... I keep listening to "every day I write the book" at the moment, it's a great bass line, simple where it needs to be ! My current bass is an Iceni custom 5 which I'm putting through an Alembic pre-amp, and Chevin power amp into 2 Tech soundsystems cabs, a 2X12, and a 1X15, I also have a Jap Fender '62 reissue jazz, a Yamaha BB350 fretless, a Fender musicmaster, and a few others, all LEFTY. I also have a Mesa/Boogie 400+, but it's too heavy to take out all the time ! I don't use effects, I like the sound as it is. Sorry to witter on, I guess it wasn't a short intro after all. - El Gnomo.
