1. Original post edited to indicate sold pending payment.
2. Any interest in lovely valve tone at manageable levels? M
3. Thanks both. I'll really miss the tone when it goes.
4. bertbass: sorry for the long silence. Dave Green at Ashdown was unbelievably helpful. He thought there might have been an issue with the power tubes but when he checked it out he said it's working perfectly and pushing out the 30 watts. So it looks like I just need a bigger amp to keep up with my band. To this end I've bought a Mesa/Boogie Buster from here (200 watt all tube head) and the Little Bastard is for sale here: http://basschat.co.uk/topic/202074-ashdown-little-bastard-30w-all-valve-amp/page__fromsearch__1 It's a real shame, it was nearly the perfect solution: all tube tone, light, small, portable. I guess it'll just have to go to someone who likes a bit of grit or who plays with a slightly quieter band.
5. For sale is a valve preamp from Dave Hall. Many Basschatters love Dave Hall's hand-made eq and dirt boxes: well this one appears to have the lot. Five valves, eq control, two channels, footswitch, headphone option, effects loop. It's a £640 for £125 for a reason, though: it needs a good service because it doesn't all work. You can always get it to do the basics – two channels of dual gain stage tube preamp warming up or distorting of the tone – but some of the more sophisticated features are not so reliable. I think it would all come good with a service but I've moved to all-valve amps so don't really need it any more so am keen just to move it on as is, hence the low price. This really warms up the sound beautifully and adds full on all-valve fuzz if needed. I had really great results with a guitar as well. This is a piece of UK hand-made kit and it allows for several different kinds of distortion so is quite flexible. The issues are, though: some of the switches are a bit shoogly; the eq section doesn't seem to make much of a difference; the two channels behave differently (the red channel has more distortion in it than the blue, I find); and I couldn't make out how to make all of the nobs and switches work (which is likely as much to be user error as anything). You can have the settings very low to add some warmth but this gets gritty pretty quickly once you start feeding the sound from the first valve through a second one. I'm selling because I found I didn't like as much grit in my sound as I thought I might. A review of it from a fellow basschatter is here: http://basschat.co.uk/topic/5239-dha-vt5-studio-bass-preamp/page__p__787470__hl__dha%20vt5__fromsearch__1#entry787470 Anyone is welcome to come and try it in Glasgow. Price: £125 shipped
6. SOLD _______________ For sale is this Yamaha BBT210 cab. This is a high quality, loud cab that makes a great sound. I'm selling because I've moved on to Barefaced cabs. This isn't light but it's small and sounds super. It has a tweeter (which I don't use but seems to do the job when tested) that's adjustable so can be used fully on, fully off or anywhere in between I've run it with a Hartke 200 watt head and an Ashdown 300 watt head and it has done me for any gigs I've needed (including a rock/metal covers band with a crazy hit-em-harder drummer). This thing is bomb-proof and is in good condition. Anyone is welcome to come and try it. I will post it but it is heavy so may only be economic for people who can make it to Glasgow. Price £100 plus shipping
7. Edit 25.3.13: SOLD, pending payment For sale is this Fender Bassman 20, a relatively rare Fender combo from the early 1980s that is great for bass but also appears to be well-loved by guitarists and harmonica players. It is a point-to-point wired, all-valve, 18 watts with a 15" speaker. It's from the Paul Rivera era at Fender, and there don't seem to have been very many made. It makes a beautiful sound but for bass it is a recording/practice/jamming amp but doesn't have enough power to keep up with a drummer and full band very well in a gig situation. If you want pure valve tone at playing-in-the-house levels or you want to be able to get a sweet recorded tone without waking the neighbours then this is the one for you. I've played guitar through it and you get a beautiful rich, full tone. It is properly loud with guitar and I haven't had the chance to push it to distortion in the house because it's so loud. I wish I could keep it just for guitar but I need to sell to contribute funds to a louder all-valve bass head, sadly. Price: £370 delivered
8. This is now sold. Thanks. For sale is this all-valve Ashdown head in perfect condition. It has just been given a once-over and green light by the man who designed and built it, Dave Green at Ashdown. This is one of the UK-made versions (number 25 of the 100 UK-made originals) and comes in its original box complete with certificate signed by its maker Dave Green and Ashdown boss Mark Gooday. It also comes with a set of four Brimar CV4005 NOS power valves complete with the necessary adaptors that the guy who sold it to me included as possible alternatives to the power valves in it. I haven't tried them. It makes a gorgeous full, rich sound. It breaks up at higher gain to give great distorted tones but at lower gain gives a lovely warn thump of a sound. This is the first all-valve head I've had and the minute I plugged in I realised what the all-valve fuss was about. I'm only selling to get a bigger valve head to do gigs with. This is loud for its size and power-rating but I just need more clean headroom than this can give to fill reasonable-sized pubs without PA support. It has a really good DI for going into PA for more volume that comes after the power valve stage so you really get that valve tone out of it. That's not right for me because our PA is very basic and I don't want to mess with the vocals, which is all that's going through it. Price: £350 delivered (I'm in Glasgow)
9. I think this looks great and, most importantly, it makes life easier for the volunteers running the site while retaining the core function of that part of the forum - being able to advertise things for sale. I think the lack of bumping is actually a benefit - bumps are a pain, and bumping drowns out the listings of people who don't have the time/brass neck to constantly bump their items. This creates a more level playing field where everything is just listed once and left to buyers to find in a clear, bump-less list of items for sale. This is a better experience for buyers and a fairer set up for sellers. I too was quite surprised and disappointed to see that only 4% of successful sales lead to a donation. That's not very good. I can only imagine that people are not very aware of what the costs of running the site actually are - perhaps a few bullet points on what the costs actually are somewhere in the form for filling in an ad would help explain the need for the small fee? I'm not objecting to a fee, I think it's perfectly reasonable, I'm only suggesting letting people know what the fee goes towards at the point where they're being asked to pay it. Well done BC bosses, Matthew
10. For sale is a big box of valves put together by Dave Hall, the VT5. Many Basschatters love Dave Hall's hand-made eq and dirt boxes: well this one appears to have the lot. Five valves, eq control, two channels, footswitch, headphone option, effects loop. This really warms up the sound beautifully and adds full on all-valve fuzz if needed. I had really great results with a six string guitar as well. The good thing about this is that it's lots of valves for the money and is a piece of UK hand-made kit and it allows for several different kinds of distortion so is quite flexible. Buyers should be aware, though, that it doesn't work fully and perfectly (and never did in my hands). Some of the switches are a bit shoogly; the eq section doesn't seem to make much of a difference; the two channels behave differently (the red channel has more distortion in it than the blue, I find); and I couldn't make out how to make all of the nobs and switches work. So I can't guarantee that it does much beyond adding warmth or fuzz, but it may do, I am not the most sophisticated user. This is fully reflected in the price: this is £150 for a pre-amp that cost £639 when new. Any issues are, I'm sure, just natural wear and tear and the preamp just needs someone to spend more time learning its ins and outs than I have. It adds controllable distortion but I can't vouch for what else it can do beyond that. You can have the settings very low to add some warmth but this gets gritty pretty quickly once you start feeding the sound from the first valve through a second one. I'm selling because I found I didn't like as much grit in my sound as I thought I might. A review of it from a fellow basschatter is here: http://basschat.co.u...__1#entry787470 Anyone is welcome to come and try it in Glasgow. I am happy to post at buyer's expense.
11. For sale is a Yamaha BBT210 cab. This is a high quality, loud cab that makes a great sound. I'm selling because I've moved on to Barefaced cabs. 12. I found mine wasn't loud enough at my first gig with it - it broke up too early. I've tried lower gain preamps but the problem remains. Dave Green at Ashdown thinks there might be a problem and is going to look at it. It wouldn't need to get that much louder to be fine, so I'm optimistic.
13. Update on this: I phoned Ashdown and talked to Dave Green himself, who's going to take a look at it if I pack it up and send it to him. He, too, thinks that there may be a fault, maybe it's not using all the power valves or something. Given that he designed and built it, if he can't find out what's going on then nobody can. If it works out and he finds and fixes the fault (if there is one) I think this is going to count as one of the great customer services experiences of all time.
14. Chris, the old Jazz is a bit neglected because I still haven't found a better neck for it. I haven't been looking very hard, mind, and I keep meaning to order one from Warmoth but I've been distracted by a '62 Precision the wife bought me in the mean time. You can see how that would turn a chap's head. bertbass: I fear you're right, but other users of the amps insist it's loud enough to gig with and my band's not that loud, so I'm keen just to eliminate any possible faults before I give up and sell it on. Thanks, Matthew
15. Hello, has anyone in or near Glasgow got an Ashdown Little Bastard? I got one a couple of weeks ago and can't get as much cleanish volume out of it as people seem to say I should be able to. I've tried two sets of different preamp valves but still get the same farting when I turn it a little past halfway, which I need to do for gigging. I was hoping to compare it with another one, if someone's happy to let me come and have a go. That way if this is just the way they are I can sell it on and find something more suitable, but if it's not then I can continue to try to find what the problem is. Any help would be really appreciated, thanks, Matthew
16. Gareth, having just bought a Little Bastard and being a valve novice (who's about to try ECC81 to try and clean up the LB tone a little), I'd be interested to know: what were the results of your trials and tests? Which valves were best/which had what effect? Matthew
17. Just bought Grahame's Little Bastard head. His communication was exemplary, he was helpful, cheerful, packed the amp very securely and did everything he said he would when he would, and you can't ask for more than that. A top chap to deal with. Matthew
18. I've just bought more OBBM cables - I've never had cables last so long in such good condition.
19. Is this still available? I've PM-d you, thanks, Matthew
20. Is this still available? You have PM, Matthew
21. Thanks for that link - I gave the guy a shout and went to see it tonight. It's fantastic, but very heavy (obviously), and I've got a bit of back trouble these days, so I now have some serious thinking to do. Tredders - he did say there were two or threre people down south wanted to buy it but that it was still for sale and he was trying to sell it locally if at all possible to avoid having to pack it, I hope you don't feel that my considering it is treading on your toes.
