1. I saw The Who last night in Glasgow (you can read my review in The Daily Telegraph here if you like) and this thread came instantly to mind. It was Pino, though it may as well have been my aunt Mabel. They go and hire what must be one of the most expensive hands in the business and I honestly didn't hear a single note he played all night. I was in great seats, maybe 15 rows back, bang in the middle, and I was straining to hear him as I admire his restrained, tasteful playing, but nothing. I totally appreciate what Phil Starr is saying above, that's a very informed and measured response. But as others have said, the kick drum or the left hand of keyboards or other bassy noises seem to make it through, it just seems to be the bass that's more or less turned off. Very frustrating. All I had was Townshend and Daltrey bickering like old fishwives to cheer me up.
2. If for any reason they're not suitable for basieblue then I'd like second dibs. Thanks.
3. They don't come much bigger than Led Zeppelin: I saw their O2 show in 2007 (I was pretty much the most excited person in the world) and they royally messed up Dazed And Confused, the part where the extended improvisation winds back into the main riff near the end. Jason Bonham cocked up the timing of the stop-start bit was and it was a massive, obvious howler. But they just ploughed through. I felt sorry for him: once in a lifetime opportunity, filling your dad's shoes and you balls up something pretty basic. He was otherwise pretty good. I got the DVD of the show and listened with interest - they just fudge it by fading in and out to cover the mistake in a way that's pretty obvious if you know what to listen for. M
4. Hi, when you say 'very loud for 50W' would it keep up with a reasonable volume (ie not screaming guitars) band with one cab (Barefaced Compact) would you say? Also, what's the actual weight? Thanks, Matthew
5. Badboy1984 - you can hear the difference, the LB550 sound isn't a sweet and saturated because of that lack of a valve power stage, but it's pretty close, and the tone is certainly of the same character because of that preamp.
6. My blues band isn't very loud but my LB30 (through a Barefaced Compact) couldn't keep up, which is a shame as it's the best tone I've had. I got a Little Bastard 550 instead and it's been great - loud enough, very similar tone, very light.
7. Bought a phone from Al and it went smooth as possible, great communication.
8. These amps make a lovely, lovely sound. Good luck with the sale.
9. Stop - you're making me want to keep it now, and I do have to move it on. Thanks for the kind words, though, it does sound beautiful.
10. My experience was the same I'm afraid. I've never had a better sound than the LB30 but it just couldn't cut it with a not-too-loud one guitar blues band. It's a real shame. I felt that even a 50 or 60-watter would have done it. I loved how light it was, while still having a valve output stage and would love someone to do something between this and the heavy 100 watters. Matthew
11. Hi Krispn, I'm afraid not - I've already bought the replacement head, so it's only a sale I'm looking for. Matthew
12. Bigwan - I'm in Glasgow, we're so close I could nearly throw it from Troon for you to catch on your side of the sea.
13. Now sold, thanks. ______________________________________________________ Mesa Boogie Buster 200 watt all valve head for sale. This is a versatile, powerful amp with a fantastic rich sound. It sounds great and really can do lots of different tones. The EQ is via knobs and a really precise graphic EQ section, and it's well worth downloading the manual and taking the time to use the guidance there to find tones, that really helps you get the most out of this one's versatility. It's a lovely sounding amp that never got pushed hard with my blues band at gigs through a Barefaced Compact, so I just don't need 200 tube watts, hence the sale. It's just had a full service and has had all the power valves newly replaced - it hasn't been gigged or rehearsed with since the service. It weighs around 23-24KG, so it's heavy, as you'd expect an all-valve 200 watter to be, but not as heavy as some. It was re-upholstered in this colour scheme by a previous owner. Comes with branded cover. Obviously collection from Glasgow would be better because of weight/potential fragility but can be sent by courier, insured, for £25 to the UK. 14. I play at home through this lovely Fender Bassman, 18W all valve combo. It's got such a beautiful tone, it's my favourite amp, but sadly it's just not loud enough for gigs with my blues band. Perfect for a smaller, quieter outfit, practising or recording, but sadly I don't do much of any of that. Sounds great with guitar as well. It's point to point, from the Rivera era and is a cracker. I actually sold it earlier this year but got it back when there seemed to be problems with the electrics. It works fine for me at home, so actually quite glad I got it back. 15. Bought an Ashdown Little Bastard 550 from Geoff - he was easy and pleasant to deal with and the amp arrived safe and snug and working just fine. Buy with confidence from Geoff, it was a pleasure.
16. Albi bought an amp from me and the transaction was smooth and faultless. Thanks Albi. Matthew
17. I've pretty much spent my life chasing this sound, from Ten Years After's Cricklewood Green album. It's 50,000 Miles Beneath My Brain. Not a great band, not a great song, but what a sound. I love that it has just a touch of grit, lots of untrebly fret clank for definition and rich bottom end. It's organic and human and gives the bass a real place in the band's sound as something more than just being an accompanying wobble in the bottom end. You can really hear it at 1'28. When I change bass, amp, strings, anything, this is still pretty much the litmus test: does it sound good playing this passage? If not, whatever I've changed has to go. 18. Legion, that's my bass! I'm very glad you didn't buy it, cause it meant I could. It is a thing of abiding beauty. Thanks again Howard, or should I say Uncle Horrid? Matthew
19. Sorry, Glen Hansard played 'Outspan', the ginger guitarist. Missing piece of vital information there.
20. I don't know about the bass, but Glen Hansard still plays the guitar he plays in the film, which I think is a Squier. He was very famous in Ireland for years as lead singer with The Frames (who were at times extremely good, at times a poor Pixies knock-off), and won an Oscar for a song from a movie in 2008 that he also starred in. I covered music in Ireland for a few years as a reviewer and his press guys put out a release after a series of shows in, I think, Poland, where he lost the guitar and was distraught. It was found not long after. Just shows you don't need the big gear to make a big impact. Knowing this has not dampened my gas one bit.
21. Walbassist, I'll PM you everything he said to me about them, but it doesn't seem like the previous seller used them, Matthew
