1. You certainly have to be a certain type of player to embrace things like the pod. It does take a lot of tweaking and mucking about to get what you want, but some people love that (like me). If you know how to get it, you can get anything you want from the pod. Aside from the whole digital/analogue argument (I can't tell the difference) then there is really no reason to say that it is an inferior piece of equipment to any other solution. To say that 'if it was any good how come everyone doesn't use them' is plainly ridiculous. Some players like simplicity and that is fair enough, but there are amazing options out there for those who like to tweak and fiddle. In all honesty once you have your patches set up and tried them in various settings, it becomes the most simple piece of plug 'n' play equipment out there because one box does it all! Cheers ped
2. It's the left channel of my stereo... nowhere else to put the speaker. They are too far apart really but my living room is the wrong sort of shape what with the Vdrums in the other corner!
3. Here is a poor pic of my SWR - a 4x8 and 1x15 from the early 90's. And a Hifi speaker! Really nice gear - fairly light and sounds superb. Job's a good'un
4. I have gone through lots of setup changes, from a Mesa 400+ to a pod, to a Trace V4 to an SWR and power amp to a Vbass. My tone has remained the same throughout.
5. Sorry AM1 I thought you said you hadn't been playing for very long, so got confused. Not that having played for a long time makes ones opinions any more valid.
6. How long have you been playing, AM1?
7. That's right. However it needn't be expensive. For a long time I used an extra long lead to the headphone output of my vbass, with the vbass DI'd to desk and PA and now sent stereo to my amp. Really nice to have the same sound everywhere. Also, just because you have a pod or similar which is capable of all sorts of sounds, it doesn't mean you have to use them. Nearly all the time I had my clean patch which was a bit of compression and nothing else. If you have a good sounding bass then the Pod will not change that one bit. Fantastic piece of gear IMO and used on far more records than people realise. Sorry, what I meant to say was that it is cheapo plastic and because not everyone uses them they are obviously rubbish. ped
8. I got a 400w 1u digital poweramp for £90, and an SWR 4x8 and 1x15 setup for £200. Couldn't be happier - sometimes I think 'fashionable' amplifiers and especially speakers are largely marketing and gumpf which makes no difference in anything other than price, as Alex, among others, have shown. I really don't think price is a factor which gear can be judged by in terms of sound.
9. I 'dumped it all for a pod' a while back. I went with the XT pro and floorboard option. I had already owned the pod alongside my amp and used it exclusively for all my recording and home playing through IEMs. I think it was when I played a gig in Manchester after recovering from a back operation that I realised what a good idea it was. All I took to the gig was my pod, my IEMs and my bass. I got my studio sound live and could hear myself better than ever before. It got to the point where my amplifier became a glorified personal monitor - the larger the gigs the less I needed an amp because all the audience could hear was the FOH anyway. The pod route worked as long as the monitors at the venue were up to it - not for sound necessarily as I had my headphones, but for a bit of 'rumble'. Without IEMs though I would be uneasy about using just the pod because more often than not the monitors at the venue are not up to much, unless or course your band has their own setup. I sold the pod a while back for the Roland equivalent, the Vbass, and haven't been happier. I use it for recording and home playing and live through the PA, but I also have a bass stack with a poweramp which I can plug the Vbass into alongside the PA or any combination of the others if I need to, because sometimes only a rig will do. It works for me and I think lots of people are coming round to the idea of such a setup in the search for lightweight solutions. Cheers ped
10. Beaut' Enjoy it. Think Kiwi has the same Lexicon unit, nice addition. ped
11. You seem to be consistently ever so slightly behind the beat, audio lag?
12.
If you've got an old nice sized IDE hard drive lying about, I can mod your XBOX, fit the bigger drive and fill it up with games...
I bet you say that to all the ladies
13. I use Hydrogen
14. 4 stringer, me - though I have had and played all sorts up to 6 string and found them equally fun. I have definitely settled on two four strings now, fretted and fretless. I always tune my basses DADG though so I don't feel quite right playing in E. Might as well have a few extra notes, and I like the lower tension. Cheers ped
15. Basschat is now OHPF
16. Here is a B string clip I sent to a prospective buyer who wanted to hear the clarity of the low end. You will need headphones for this one! Cheers ped Here is another clip I did for a buyer...
17. What a superb price. I would love to try this cab, it looks great and would suit my needs down to the ground! Good luck ped
18. I just picked up a pair of early SWR cabs, a 4x8 and 1x15. they sound great, both fit in the boot of my car and are fairly light. They say they were made in Sylmar, CA. Circa 1994. The Black Beauty is basically the same as my 1x15 I think.
19.
They are and you should. I've seen them a couple of times at The Jazz cafe and had a very brief chat with the bass player about Ibanez SR1005's. Top bloke and a great band. I think that Morph the Cat was released a couple of years ago. Walter Becker's Last solo album: Circus Money is pretty good for bass grooves too Welcome to Basschat Pete Academy.
I quite like Circus Money but found the backing singers ruined some of the songs, too delicate and all over the place IMO. I agree there are some nice bass grooves on there though, Walter is a superb bassist.
20. Hi Pete, I heard you guys were really good. I will have to check you out soon. ped
21. I think Les has finally lost it!
22. What's the problem with it? Is it the Pensa jazz?
23. Yep I saw it!
24. Yeah, for some reason the person who bought it from the gallery changed it for a metal one... ruined it IMO!
25. Here's one I used to have - the colour in the flesh was very striking! As for your question about pickup distance etc - I would think a thin veneer would be best to allow maximum adjustability. Try putting your pickups right down low and see if it makes a difference at the moment. ped
